Bob was a preacher, social activist.... he used his musical talent to speak to the world of it's social injustices... he walked the walk. A rare specimen.
Bob Marley was outside of the box when it came to Raggae. His was the word or Peace, Love and Unity NOT the violent activism that was lead by Rastafari at the time. Bob lost his life because he was calling for Love like Martin L. King did.
@Michael Bochnia, I can see/hear truth in what you say. I am a little lost on lost his life trying to bring love to people. I agree in a figurative sense but he also died of cancer. Fortunately for us he was not assassinated in an attempt on his life and others around the Wailers. The violence around life him and others who lived in Jamaica was more intense than I have words for. I see his leaving Jamaica for England where there was more acceptance of either him, Rastafarian people, Reggae, whatever it was as a good thing for the world. I'd love some conversations on this. Educated but not as much as possible.
Probably one of the single most universally liked performer among everyone. By that I mean if you had a group of people who were into all different genres, rock fans, metalheads, hip hop & R&B fans, country, jazz, show tunes, even classical. Put on some Bob Marley and everyone will like it, or at least find it agreeable. Can't think of any other artist that has that same universal appeal.
I've been playing the original Reggae since I was a kid the 1970s and I can't *stand* this band. They're ruining what makes the style so great in a quest to be a sort of Jamaican version of The Band. No offense intended.
Probably the only thing that's put me off Marley a little is that it's so overplayed. I've worked in so many restaurants and attended so many parties in which one or another of his songs are CONSTANTLY on in the background. Probably just a victim of his own universal appeal.
As a Jamaican who grew up listening to Bob, there are no words to adequately express how much this man means to our country. Most Jamaicans absolutely love Bob's heartfelt, socially concious music! A true Jamaican icon. Nuff respect to you Fil for this analysis.
I'll be so bold as to say that if anyone was NOT touched emotionally by Bob's performance here, they must have a heart of stone. Such an amazing person, he had so much chi/prana/shakti/energy you can still feel it today in this video from 40 years ago. Thanks, Fil, for covering the great Bob Marley, a lion amongst men if ever there was one. Jah! Rastafari! Ever living, ever loving. Bless.

Bob Marley and the Wailers..superb . Bob's voice was a stand alone instrument. Great analysis of his lyrics and his delivery. Thank you. Sometimes I think this generation will forget his message if we do not remind them.
Bob Marley was one of a kind. Full of peace and love. Way ahead of his time. The world would be a better place if there were alot more of Bob Marleys around. Peace to everyone and R I P Bob. Sadly missed.

Bob Marley is such an icon. When you watch other performers like Lenny Kravitz, Ben Harper even The John Butler trio, it's easy to see where they got there inspiration from. An absolute legend! Hats off to Bob ✌
Gary Matthiesen - I had tickets to see Bob Marley and the Wailers at UBC in 1980...but then it was cancelled because he became ill. So I never did get to see him live. Still a huge fan, of course.

I was first introduced to Bob while sailing the Caribbean back in the late eighties. It's certainly part of the tapestry of my life now. This song is probably my second favorite, right after Redemption Song. Thanks so much for showing the chords, Fil, that should make it a cinch to pick up...much appreciated!
Ohhhh! Bob Marley . Now there is one talented man. So much emotion in every single song! So much soul . You can’t help but dance . I have heard this song , so thanks for another great analysis Fil ! You know when people ask you , if you could have dinner with 12 people, living or otherwise,he’s definitely one of them. There’s so much character in his voice, and his short life . What a legacy he left . RIP Bob ! ❤️❤️❤️☮️

Beautiful Fil...Though you are very thorough and straightforward with your analysis, you bring heart to it. 🎶🔥♥️🔥🎶 Bob Marley and his sound brought a uniquiness to reggae, a soul of which many imatated but never captures quite like Bob did with the Whalers.
Bob Marley sang with his heart and soul as much as his voice. Fil, as always, your guitar tutorial enhances my understanding of the music and musician.
I can jam with Bob all day long... He gives you so much to work with... Freestyle ... I improvise on his song's.. His sleepy Jamaican blues... I can run all day long like a racehorse in the Kentucky Derby... He puts everything into his vocals...thanks for the pic stick action professor... Rock 🎸
1st time I heard this, I was a kid fishing for flounder, what you might call sole, plaice, or "sand dabs" on your side of the pond, in a brackish tidal river, and listening to a portable radio. The DJ played Lively Up Yourself and No Woman No Cry in tandem, right off the beginning of the Natty Dread album, and I was hooked, just as surely as the flounder I caught !
There are many Bob Marley performances which I can almost not listen to because they bring me close to tears. His life is so full of pain, poverty, suffering, genuine struggle but brings such emotion and joy in his performances and song writing. He was so absorbed in his performance, it's like he doesn't plan what or how he sings but gets swept up in the moment. Just breathtaking. All my life I've been obsessed with Bob and his music and that of the wailers who in my opinion were a breathtaking band. Surrounded by amazing musicians and they toured like family (and were). If you listen to the later albums, Uprising and Confrontation, he still had so much to offer when he was taking from us. "Could You be Loved" for example was written to order as Chris Blackwell insisted the album needed a "banger" for a single. Please do more Marley!! Thanks for your reaction.
Bob Marley's unique vocalisation never sounded intentional. He expressed himself in the way a great scat singer would. While many reggae preformers tried to emulate him; they didn't possess his rich tonal quality. Thanks Fil for reminding us of an artist who's music was "world" beyond the genre that identified him ♥️
You gave a great synopsis of his life and career. Jamaica is such a musical place. I’m so thankful that I was able to visit without the whole resort scene. I stayed with real people and woke up to the sounds of music floating up the hill from the neighbors. It was a joyful experience!
Fil, have you seen this guy do his acoustic Marley cover? I would really enjoy a breakdown as to what he’s doing ua-cam.com/video/GhccnJQBF-k/v-deo.html
You know how people note what number "like" they are? I am so happy to be #11, turn it up! ...........Love Bob Marley, just listened to recorded version of 'No Woman No Cry' yesterday, it seems very timely. Live... take it, Fil!
I have always loved this song, but I never concerned myself with “why”? Your breakdown of all the superior elements that come together and just naturally flow into “No woman no cry” explain why. Thank you, Fil !!
Love Bob marley and the Wailers but man the 60's and 70's was insane for the music. How did people cope with so many legendary bands/artists? Must of felt like a dream. Timeless music, what a time to be alive. Pity I was born in the 80's so missed it.
I really appreciate your analysis (not to be confused with reaction). I particularly appreciate your positivity and genuine appreciation for a wide range of music. At the risk of being critical of reacters the typical reaction video is like the teenager on American Bandstand rating a record." It has a good beat and you can dance to it" was the predictable response. Some have the ridiculous notion they have the qualifications to criticize anyone. You either like it or you don't. You're probably thinking, American Bandstand? How old are you?

RIP Bob and thanks to all of those who understand the message and carry, in their own way, the legacy!! You're all doing yourselves and us a favor!! this isn't just about the music and the performances...humanity, message etc are central!! Him and Dr Martin Luther King are greatly missed....krishnamurti too!
"Concrete Jungle" - now that is an incredible recording with Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston Knock your socks off analyzing that record Interesting story behind the guitar part played by a Southern white boy, as would have been said. Chris Blackwell has commented on this "complex" recording. Blue Whistle show, BBC, 1970s, before they were big and the name change.
Fab....love Bob...Johnny B Goode Hendrix Berkeley 1970...Jimi only played it live once...its amazing he just pulled it out the bag on the spur of the moment...keep up the great work Peace and love from a fellow axe player Jez..
If Bob Marley was alive today he would be the biggest act in the world, there is no other artist with such a universal sound that was loved by all cultures and peoples.
Wow such a great song and he would make you think it would be alright but he can hit on so many different points but you have to understand what he means to understand the song and too understand him
@@catherinelynnfraser2001 yes indeed and one nobody has been able to produce because like Fil said Bob could sing a song and make it mean a different thing with each lyric just by the way he sang it and his body language would also tell a story with the song and now day's that is something that the young people don't understand with the music it's not just about getting up on the stage and singing and jumping around if you want to be known for being a true artist then you must be able to sing and tell a story with your body language at the same time as Bob did and have the range with your vocals to be able to change without even having to think about that's what they are missing he could do it without you ever noticing but you have to know real music like in this era to really understand it
Found it:):) In the pocket analysis. Indeed, the rhythm guitar on 2 and 4 with the drum’s emphasis/accent on 3 with the high-hat opening on the ‘and’ of 4, close on 1, all gives it that reggae feel. Yes, in the beginning they were learning but the inspiration and talent was clearly there. Another thing about Bob is that his vocal range was quite large; in No Woman No Cry, you can hear him in the second verse, at the end, hits the low range vs Concrete Jungle where he’s all mostly in the high range, not using falsetto, just amazing voice quality. So much can be said about Bob, and not forgetting Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh…they were all very talented and worked hard musically to perfect their delivery in song writing (as most know reggae is a music with a message about the status of the world with no sugar-coating), performance, recording (Bob even ended up having his own recording studio so the band could rehearse and record). I’d the opportunity to watch him live when I was 7, he performed for the independence of Zimbabwe 1980, Prince Charles was there handing over the country from Rhodesia, a British ruled country then. With Bob, one could go on forever. Anyway, thanks for sharing your musicality and what you hear…as a composer, it’s always fun to hear different takes on so many of the artists/musicians you cover. Keep up the great work!
Hello Fil, The one and only, what a great talent. Great pick and analysis. His music really touched a lot of people. Love the guitar chords with the narrative. Glad your doing well. A favorite channel. All the best, C.
Bob Marley is the singer we need right now. His messages about peace and love I fear are being forgotten. Do you think Bob Marley is about to be forgotten ?
........I researched this song amongst the various amateurs that cover it....It is a song that will get you 400,000 views at the drop of a pin.....It's storytelling music......I am not sure how someone could sit down and say, "I am going to write this song"...called 'No Woman, No Cry'....then do it....
In 1974 I ran out to get Clapton's 461 Ocean Boulevard and heard this strange (for me) song called I Shot the Sheriff. Read an interview where Clapton mentioned Bob Marley and I went out and found "Burnin" by The Wailers. Hooked ever since. For all his contributions to music, Clapton's greatest legacy might be introducing millions of folks like me to reggae and Bob Marley.
Bob Marley. Seriously, what's not to like. He used to come to Germany regularly and the last time he came to my city I thought, I'd go see him following year. Little did I know he would no longer be around. I've regretted that ever since. My favourite songs are "Redemption Song" and "Buffalo Soldier". He was so much more than a musician. Unforgettable and deeply missed .
the “Acoustic Medley” on the box set Songs of Freedom released in 1992 is beautiful!! I ❤️ Bob! Got to see The Wailers in 1994 or 95 freshman year in college & went to party with them at their hotel after(a bunch of us) and it was fun to say the least! Have partied with a lot of musicians but besides Merl Saunders & His Rainforest Band none were such gentlemen✌🏻😇
My buddy and I used to listen to this when some girl dumped us, because we thought “No Woman No Cry” meant something like, “Women, you’re better off without them., sitting around with your friends.”
Amandla festival Harvard stadium 21 July 79 has be one best live performances of no woman no cry I've ever seen or heard This footage of full concert has to be released officially it's been way to long What a truely amazing artist he is the greatest the world ever seen

I’m not a reggae fan but as a performer Bob Marley had a very rare, and exceptional, level of charisma. He’s someone who can hold you spellbound.

To be fair when Bob was alive he wasn’t really loved by Jamaica 🇯🇲 as much as europe loved him
He is a true global genius a real star bigger than the Beatles Bob is known in every corner of the earth and love everywhere.
The world could definitely use some Bob Marley in 2020. ☮️

thanks for the video!!
Great video on Bob Marley. I've always liked his music but didn't know much about his background!
Takes me back to my teen years with my friends. A joint, on the couch, and listening to Bob Marley, lol. What an amazing songwriter he was
"Concrete Jungle" - now that is an incredible recording with Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston
Knock your socks off analyzing that record
Interesting story behind the guitar part played by a Southern white boy, as would have been said.
My favorite Bob Marley tune!!!!!!
If Bob Marley was alive today he would be the biggest act in the world, there is no other artist with such a universal sound that was loved by all cultures and peoples.
We need Bob now more than ever.
Bob is here, we just have to open our hearts and let him out.
Hi Fil, great video thanks! I'd love to see you do a video on Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. Great songwriting and great musicianship.
Wow such a great song and he would make you think it would be alright but he can hit on so many different points but you have to understand what he means to understand the song and too understand him
There was technical brilliance and a spiritual intensity and a heartbeat that continues to resonate
Bob is a feeling, not a human.
I’m learning trenctown Rick on uke...it’s a very simple intelligent song...he was unique in putting all of his heart into a simple song
Hello Fil, The one and only, what a great talent. Great pick and analysis. His music really touched a lot of people. Love the guitar chords with the narrative. Glad your doing well. A favorite channel. All the best, C.
Thanks!
I hear a lot of his work caught in the fire. 'Uprising' is a very clear studio recording. Love Bob...
Bob Marley is the singer we need right now. His messages about peace and love I fear are being forgotten. Do you think Bob Marley is about to be forgotten ?
I hope not!
I sure HOPE that Bob Marley WILL NEVER, EVER BE FORGOTTEN!!!🍀🤞🤞
you are amazingly talented! i don’t need professional training to recognize that! wow! 👍👍
........I researched this song amongst the various amateurs that cover it....It is a song that will get you 400,000 views at the drop of a pin.....It's storytelling music......I am not sure how someone could sit down and say, "I am going to write this song"...called 'No Woman, No Cry'....then do it....
I would like to hear you play this just on your guitar and singing with kindness and your beautiful voice. Number 1 hit?
Fil great synopsis and video... Trev
Thanks for that Fil! And....everything's gonna be all right....
You are really good Fil. Very thorough.
Thanks!
Bob was Hypnotic
Not following Bob Marley career I've learn a lot tonight. keep Rockin' through the history of music Fil.
the “Acoustic Medley” on the box set Songs of Freedom released in 1992 is beautiful!!
My buddy and I used to listen to this when some girl dumped us, because we thought “No Woman No Cry” meant something like, “Women, you’re better off without them., sitting around with your friends.”
its deeper than than my friend. Its about struggle that the women go through
Amandla festival Harvard stadium 21 July 79 has be one best live performances of no woman no cry I've ever seen or heard

What a truely amazing artist he is the greatest the world ever seen
