  • Firewood Bundles - How to Make, What Size Bag, and How Long of a Burn? That is what I show and discuss in this video. A quick demonstration of making a firewood bundle with my empty trash can method and then I talk about something I didn't know before. How long will a bundle of firewood last when burning it all at once.

    It used to go for 5 dollars a bag here in Florida. Inflation changed that. It's going for 8 a bag, or 3 for 20 now.

    $5 is a great value and nice job with the time lapse as you care about your customers and want to ensure they’re getting a good value. If you have a process down and prefer the presentation of the bags then I would not switch to wrap. 👍

    I figured a bundle I sell should last about an hour too. If they're having some friends over for a fire and spend $20 with me, that should last them for the duration of their night. We all know the party stops when the fire does.

    I sell firewood bags up here in Maine in a very popular tourist / camping destination in a beach town, and when I switched from wrapping bundles to firewood bags (the exact ones you have in this video), my sales dramatically increased. I think people driving by saw the bags and saw quality, especially for $5. Everyone around here uses plastic wrap and I don't think the campers like it. I'd rather lose a little bit of money per bundle for a much higher quality product! They are easier to grab, they look way better than plastic wrap, and sometimes my customers return the bags for re-use! Just to give you an idea of the volume I am dealing with, I sold 350 bags of firewood from my road side stand in one weekend last 4th of July, using my palax packer 35 I can bundle a full bag in about 20 seconds. I am a very busy guy in the summer lol. Thanks for all your videos, big fan here from Maine!

    Hi Dan. Good idea to show what you get from the $5 bundles. If you’ve seen Spreadsheet Acres’ video on comparing kiln dried vs seasoned vs green you’ll have noted that seasoned actually lasts the longer than kiln dried.

    Great video and production quality.
    The timed burn was great.
    So, here's my spin on the bundler. If you are having success with selling bags at your stand and enjoy making the bundles, then don't change a thing. However I think you could increase productivity by adding more garbage cans to your process.
    Put bags on 4 cans at a time and fill all of them at once.
    A bundler is for selling bundles to a captive audience, a lodge, convenient store, campground, whatever they're gonna buy it regardless. I've seen them sold around here with with a red flyer in them and some advertising home delivery.

    • @Back40Firewood

    Like the video. My parents have a seasonal campsite at a campground and when I have a pile of wood that I’m not sure if it’s dry or not I I will bring it to them and tell them to burn it and let me know how it burns. I don’t get a lot of time to burn my own wood so that’s the next best thing for me. I don’t mess with bundles as I sell campfire wood by the pickup load or by the cord. Here we have mostly soft wood so a dozen pieces of Douglas fir will last 45 mins or so, birch or maple lasts longer. Our bundled wood you can buy from a gas station is like $7-$10 a bundle depending where you go. I’ve sold and delivered 3 pickup loads in the last 3 days. I’m out of dryish wood and need to get more today because I have orders to fill.

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  3 роки тому

      Having your parents to test is a good way to find out for sure. I've seen campgrounds that have 'regulars' or people who are there a lot get truckloads delivered in. Around here most people are having fires in their backyards but don't have the space to store or keep much wood on hand.

    • @acousticguitar355
      @acousticguitar355 3 роки тому

      The campground that my parents have a “seasonal” camp spot in used to not let any outside wood come into the campground due to the bugs but last year they told me I can sell directly to whoever has a seasonal camp spot in that campground. My grandparents and my aunt and uncle also has seasonal sites in the same campground.. actually they are beside each other.. numbers 6,7 and 8. There’s a lot of people around here that have backyard fires as well.

    Whoever makes the bundles sold at the convenience store near me, uses some sort of HEAVY duty shrink wrap (like the kind you use as a ground sheet under your tent!)- open-ish at either end, and with a handle stapled to a couple of smaller slivers. Kinda a pain to remove the staples from the piece of wood, but it sure makes for a strong handle!
    As a wood grill guy, I chose that particular bundle BECAUSE it had several smaller pieces in it. Don't want to wait forever for the fire to burn down so I can cook- I'm hungry now! lol. Normally I don't buy them, but my stock of dry ready to burn wood was very low.
    BTW, I spent the weekend woodhounding my usual spot. Cha-Ching!! Jackpot!! They've been doing some serious trimming and removal of overgrown trees in the process of replacing a bunch of old houses with new ones. This time, there were PILES of 5-6' logs of 4-6" diameter or so. Filled my pickup RIGHT up! There were larger ones aplenty, but I still have to buck by hand- that's about as big a log as I want to hand saw into chunks. Unsure of species- the bark is familiar, but not like the hard maples, oaks, Ash's, cottonwoods, Locusts etc I mainly see. Basswood maybe? White oak? soft maple? who knows. Too bad it's green.
    Free is free, though!

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  3 роки тому

      Sounds like a heck of a score on the free wood...nice job Wood Hound. As far as bags I've thought about bagging up my smaller chunks to see how they'd sell & if anyone would be interested in them, might still do it cuz I end up with plenty of small chunks. 👍 😀 🍻

    Valve for a Bag is I believe more than the Wrap Bundles, and the Bags can be reused, and i do understand the cost Bags vs Wrap, you are so right about the Candy Size, looks like everything has gone that way, take care shifty

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  3 роки тому +1

      That's my main concern with switching is how the change would come across to my regulars. Because if I made the wrapped bundles the same size as my bags are, they'd be tough to handle. And might not even be able to make them the same size with a bundler....so a change would definitely be noticed by the customer.

    @tobiasolsen3223 3 роки тому

    This is awesome, thanks for the expertise on the bagging! I am thinking about doing the same thing in my local community and have a question for you. Can you split and bag green wood during the off season, and let the wood dry/season right in the bag until it's ready to burn? Have you experienced this, and have you found the bags are resilient, or do they degrade over time? I would hate to bag up a bunch of bundles, let it season for 6 months, and then go to pick them up and the bags fall apart. Thanks for your advice and expertise. Long Live The Wolf Ridge!

It's strange but I have never heard it referred to as St Patty's Day in my life. The net bags disintegrate in the sun light. I thought about wrap, but as you say, it's kind of a down grade. People like bags, no slivers, easy to carry, sometimes you get the bags back. I don't sell loose wood at all. Been asked, I refer them to a friend that does. Great video, burn time.

    That's very interesting in the burn time! I would definitely pay $5 for an hour and a half of sitting around a fire with family and friends!! Happy St Patty's Day!! Eat lots of corned beef and drink even more green beer hahahaha 🍻🍻🍻!! Stay safe my friend!!

    Hey Dan, DATCP requires the insertion of a label on all bundles sold (location/person business/etc), even if it isn't DATCP certified. Just curious if you do that? Just want to make sure a fellow firewood bundler doesn't get into hot water.

      Hmmm I'll have to look into this a bit further. The only thing I'm missing is the amount. The bag says what it is - Firewood, it's sold on premise, but I don't have the amount listed. Thanks for the info. 👍 😀 🍻

      @@Back40Firewood There is more info on their website too about it. I just searched for firewood. Ha. I've been making small labels. Business name, address, add my website, FB page, and then whatever other requirements.
      To me it seems the text means that all firewood should be labeled. But it may also be for the certified wood too. Not sure.

    From a customer perspective, if you have something that works for you and the customers are happy then don't change a thing. The only time it should change is if it gives the customer more value for their dollar. I hate when companies that I support change the quality, packaging, or how it is delivered. I understand price changes because that is the world we live in. If I have a company who's product I like then I want that product the same every time.

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  3 роки тому

    HAY ( D ) NOT BAD... NOW IF WE CAN GET OTHER BAG SELLING WOOD HOUNDS TO FOLLOW SUIT... WE CAN GUESSTIMATE AN AVERAGE ON HOW LONG A BAG LASTS ACROSS THE WOOD HOUND MAP!!! THEN MABY CHANGING THE FORMAT WON'T BE SUCH A SHOCK TO THE CONSUMER... FOR EXAMPLE, IF THE BUNDEL AVERAGE IS 1 HOUR AND SAY 40 MIN. YOU TOSS ANOTHER TWO PIECE'S IN THE BUNDLE WHICH NOW IS A WRAP AND CALL IT NEW AND IMPROVED, CHARGE THE SAME $ 5.00 THEN GO FROM 20- TO 25 ON THE LOOSE AFTER A WHILE... OR JUST DO SOME BAG'S AND SOME BUNDLE'S, THEN ON A SIGN ASK WHAT THE FOLK'S LIKE BEST... LEAVE A PENCIL AND SOME POST IT'S SO THEY CAN REPLY WITH THERE PAYMENT - YA KNOW A LITTLE R. & D.
