You hit the nail on the head. Your sentiments mirror mine almost identically. Honorball is a great game mode - and I think it has potential to draw a bigger playerbase into tribes. I suggested that Tribes 3 launch with 4 game modes: CTF, Honorball, Team Arena, and Time Trials. All 4 game modes have the same underlying tribes mechanics, BUT play much differently - and thus can appeal to different people. Some people will like myself will want to play all of the modes, while others will stick to one or two - and that's the point - that's how you 'modernize' tribes, and expand it to a wider audience. By separating the games, you separate the communities, and make each community weaker IMO. Honorball just becomes a sort of rocket league clone - and Tribes just becomes a sort of watered down version of tribes. I also agree that whatever metrics Erez is looking at - should be ABSOLUTELY taken with a grain of salt. The game hasn't released, and the metrics are not trends to actually base anything off of - because there are so many variables in play, and its such a limited pool of data on a game that's still in alpha and that 90% of the people who will end up playing it don't even know it exists yet.
There are things that they always forget in order to make money. They had a hard time back then and if they don’t see what it is then it will struggle again. Hopefully they see what it is. As for your feed back on this video, you are right they should just simplify it by adding modes CTF, Honorball, etc…. If they make a different game it will just end their budget.
well said sir, as an old t1/t2/tv/ta guy ive been really enjoying the direction they have been going to make the game easier for new players to get into. i would be lying to say i didnt want more the t1/t2 style with this game, but as you pointed out we need to keep the community together as a hole. Many of us old farts either loved or like the honor ball, as a fun fast pace game mode. I say lets try to have our cake and eat it too if at all possible. :)
I like your 3rd option. It’s like having an open world with 16vs16 or 32vs32 with large maps and vehicles for public and scrims with the more competitive in smaller and arena maps with no vehicles that is split into honor ball or ctf. But in this option call the game TRIBES 3 without a subtitle. This makes it feel more like the main game than a sub game
Your “option 3”, with the potential for releasing a mapping tool to the community in the future really is the best option for the longevity of the Tribes IP and this game as a whole. I hope they have the funding to make that a reality.
Well articulated as always! It's so unfortunate that the game is in it's best state since the playtests began, yet the community is less excited and motivated to play than ever. Prophecy have really done a number on our psyches. Its terrible to feel like your game could be abandoned or totally pivoted based of feedback or data from absolutely tiny playtests. I just want to keep building on what we have now.
Absolutely. I agree 💯... They need to stop looking at the tiny sample and focus on making a tribes game and a good game. Not chase a trend based off such a tiny sample. Sigh.
Yet more baffling questions from the dev, but overall I think the game's been trending in a good direction. I personally hope they do their best to fit multiple gamemodes into one game. Honor Ball is really fun, but I also enjoy CTF on big maps. I'm slowly learning the tactics required for it. I'm very curious how things might play out if they add deployables and vehicles as well. My biggest question, as usual, is still: Where the grappling hook at?
Cant believe its been like 26 years since Tribes 1.. but that was incredible when that came out.. I miss tribes 1 so much that i have T3 and had abit of fun but i know it wont last very long.. It just feels like tribes Ascend.... It was fun going into real bases, the stations to change your class, putting force fields down etc, felt slower for the most part as well not so arcade like.. But im hoping some mods like TAC and renegade from the original tune it abit.. I think the matches are short though, feels liek right when the game gets going the match ends. Anyways cool....
Hey salty! Thanks for the great content and updates! Looking forward to a possible Midair 2 update video soon? They're supposedly going into an open beta in a few weeks with a big update!
Should Prophecy give up the Tribes name to make the game they want? If they just dropped the name and called it something else, they would not have us Tribes veterans pushing a path they appear to not want to take. Their options appear to either offer only smaller game experiences, OR, split the development between 2 games. I think they need to be honest and if they really want smaller team modes, they need to drop the Tribes name and the expectations that come with it.
@@SaltyOctopusAgree. I think the "3" definitely evokes 1 & 2 which were larger scale, and a tender topic for vets. Esp if they want to shrink it down. I'm not sure what "Rivals" is meant to even mean. Like if they just dropped the "3" and said Tribes: Rivals, I wonder if the discord discussions would differ.
@@SaltyOctopus I say they should allow Tribes 3 to have new gamemodes, as long as it doesn't hamper the CTF mode. Making 2 games is harder than making 1 game, even if they're based on the same code. They are making some big assumptions about how many players they're going to get if they think releasing 2 games is worthwhile.
12:23 onward is perfectly stated. Great thoughts. I'm worried that your third option would still divide the community, but the "cross pollination" as you mentioned can't be understated.
They say they liked tribes but keep showing otherwise. I get wanting to chase the purse, so I understand on the capital investment end of it. Dividing makes it easier to focus on the small map, fast pace balancing without concern for the other modes. It also makes it easier dump the smaller audience game at the drop of a hat. I might still buy a PC to play some Tribes after years of not having one but I cant say Prophecy have a sale from me with this kind of fracture and the history of Tribes abandonment.
Game needs larger scale, base stuff and whatever else. People aren't going to stick with either Honorball or comp CTF for that long. Large scale CTF with logistical elements IS Tribes. That's the hilarious fun part about it, it's a simple mode but with all these other things going on.
I used to say tribes is like StarCraft but you playing as an individual soldier. It’s a Real time strategy shooter where resource management and base building is important as well
I'm normally an old school dude who likes to keep franchises from trying to modernize itself. But I actually prefer the 7v7/12/12 CTF modes without the unnecessary clutter of bases, vehicles and other things. I won't lie and pretend like I didn't join in during Ascend. But it's the smaller size teams/ mid size levels and drift speed mechanics that drew me to the series and it's just too chaotic to have a bunch of other stuff on top of that. Honorball is a cool palette cleanser. But definitely not the draw for me.
Also while in theory I love the idea of your option 3. It always comes down to the fact that they don't want to split the player base especially since numbers always dwindle. Then it becomes harder to find matches. I also kinda worry that classic tribes will win out and then we lose the 12v12 stuff. lol

A grappling hook would be awesome. And imagine hooking someone in the air and then doing a melee attack on them haha.

Where do you get that so many love honorball? The polls show otherwise, with people favoring focusing on large scale ctf by a big margin.
A ton of people talk about their love for HonorBall, but I think they love CTF more so when the polls go up, they vote accordingly.
