Corvettes would not meet New Zealand’s ‘blue water’ naval requirements. We have frigates and inshore and offshore patrol vessels. Frigates are needed for long distance operations in the large swells and storms of the Tasman Sea, Roaring Forties, Pacific and Indian Ocean as part of anti piracy duties
as the skjold is the fastest military ship of all time one can but wonder.. we know just a fragment of its capability.. to bad norway ended development because the US didnt want it..
They also only produced less than half of what they originally intended for Norway. 5 of 12. They are sort of costly and with the fall of the soviets and the seeming stabilty of Europe, they cancelled the rest. Very unique and good ships, too bad they stopped production.
Skjold cant be considered a corvette, it is way to small. Rather some type of hybrid warfare gunboat. With that said, it is the coolest ship of all, and im swedish so im not biased :P
@@arcticblue248 yes, true. The line between destroyers, frigates and corvettes is becoming thinner and thinner. Sometimes classified as corvette, is lightly armed and OPVs are heavily armed. I think depends upon its intented use of these ships by navy.
@@saiecorp5646 Yeah, Skjold where originally intended to replace our ageing MTB's and possible upgrade that abit thats what they pretty much is ... its a stealthy fast (really fast) Motor Torpedo Boat (don't think it uses torpedoes but missiles now).
@@arcticblue248 That is great contribution. Littoral ships or coastal corvettes or shallow water ships is new concept. Make sense in guarding economic zones and prevent poaching. Great information about Norwegian Corvette. Appreciate it, thanx.

Since speed is the ranking, you missed the 44 knots Taiwanese Tuo Jiang class.

Its much larger than it looks like, by far not a gunboat. It's small look is apart of the stealth ideals of it.
Guess if anything, it could be called a Fjord Horse.

Best these ships called as OPV or shallow water corvettes.
