Seb, one pivot to what you said, your calculation is only correct if your peak energy production is smaller than your consumption at all times. If that's not true, it would be very different bcs of energy operator buy-sell rates
I work in the solar industry. Dont forget that solar panels maybe have 25years warranty, but your converter (and if you have optimizers) most of the times won’t have 25years of warranty. So dont cheap out on those
An important point I think is also that during a bear market reducing your cost to almost none but at the same time yielding a greater number of coin is a big plus to not have to sell what you are mining at a low price
Ok Seb - I did it! You talked me into Solar back in March😊 Also I saw the market was headed down, the ETH bombs triggered, the heat was on the way, and electricity prices going up. So instead of buying two more rigs and 20 more cards I put the money in Solar so I could keep mining round the clock. Thanks for your analysis !!
I went around this the other way round. In that i had already bought solar and a battery for the house and now i use mining to stop exporting power that i otherwise would not be paid for. Today in the UK a ran 16 2nd hand CPU rigs for about 8 hours with my 4kw solar array.
Man, I also want to thank you for the huge effort you make on each video to build up all those calculators and ideas. I am also mining flux full power right now, but considering getting into solar as well. Cheers!
I have an off grid solar and battery setup that I built to offset part of my homes power, and have backup during storms (I'm rural so it goes out for many hours). If I get a sunny day every other day then I can run my 650w mining rig off it 24/7. It's a fun hobby to have the miner putting the system to use.
Just about when i was researching solar panels! 🤯 Are you watching me mate? 😜 Massive appreciation for going through all these for us mate! 👍🏼 much love. ❤️🤘🏼
Solar miner here. Best thing ever since power goes out super commonly and sometimes takes weeks to be restored. Also, at around 0.24usd/kWh is a no go, more increases to come also. Puerto Rico btw. Most data I found says 0.21 cents for residential, but current bills are billed at 0.24 cents, which is insane. Puertoricans think twice about turning on their AC's 24/7 even in tropic weather due to high electric bill.
Yeah great video What a lot of people dont see is that when solar is running, if solar covers all your current energy usage, it's realy free electricity, so reducing any ROI, and making "free money" as i love to say it
Funny thing... the girlfriend and I were just talking about this as we were having our morning coffee today. Thank You for all of the great information as always
I'm late to the party here, but great video. I've got 10kw of solar with an 8.2kw inverter. My rigs are paid for and when the merge goes through I'll only be mining during the day to ensure I am mining for free. It's hard for most houses to use up 8kw of power (unless you've got a large air con - which I do unfortunately), so mining rigs are a great way to burn that excess power off when it's there.
This is a great topic and I will cover my installation at some point on my channel. I will be upgrading my solar system soon as my farm is expanding rapidly. On average my area has a 10-12% price increase in electricity each year, so it quickly adds up in savings!
For me, solar panels will ROI in 6-7 years. If I can eventually buy instead of renting, I'd definitely go solar since over the long term it makes sense.
used panels can have up to 95% of their performance of new ones. they use up more space tho, its up to your avaiable space. but you save like 80 - 90% on purchase vs new ones on dollar/kwp but dont use used converters, not worth the risk imho.
My 4kWp array with a 15kWh backup keeps my consumption below the next tariff level - usage beyond 600kWh per month prices increase by 60%. I've got the added advantage of reliable power, we've had outages for 3 days at a time twice in the last 6 months, batteries saved the food in my fridge, kept my fish tanks alive and had a lot of jealous neighbours hehehe Be warned tho shortages have already begun... Businesses are gobbling up all the smaller panels.
Numbers aside, mining with solar gets you off the grid, meaning much less risk of downtime. It also means you are free from any prying eyes who might analyze your usage and think you are growing illegal plants. We've already seen plenty of farms get raided this way. Might sound wild but it's entirely possible that in the near future governments may attempt to fight crypto by going after miners. Having your own closed power system protects you in this case as well.
See, I've done exactly this. 13,000 kwh/yr system (25 panels with micro inverters). My avg electric cost $0.2316/kwh. If I sell excess power back to the grid I get only a few pennies credit, so my excess is going into my gpu rig mining eth (680 watts) and my antminer T9+ (1340 watts) mining btc. Better returns that selling to grid here. BTW, I'm in LA area. Great video!
I pulled the plug on solar a little less than 5 months ago. I have already made back 9% of the total cost of the system. On top of that, I am mining for free. The GPUs have already paid back a little under 30% of the total solar cost. It's working spectacularly so far
I live in the UAE where, depending on which calculator you use, we have between 10 and 12 hours of sunlight per day (average over the year)....but our electricity is only $0.082 - but it still makes it worthwhile
yeah helpfull video again. i think buying solar panel more guarantee than buying gpu but humanity need everytime solar panel system. And we need thinking world's health is important
just awesome timing! made my first payment for my panels a few weeks ago and hopefully they can get installed in april.will have 23kWh in east/west direction with 30° angle of the roof.i am so curious how it will work with my 1,2gHs i have :) would have been interesting to compare this with 6 year gpu's and rebuying them 4 times to see what happened after 24 years compared to the solarpanels.
It will be very helpful if you go into detail as to how you are calculating how much electricity the mining is consuming in terms of wattage every 24 hours.. Very informative video thank you for uploading
Seb you haven't taken in to account in the fact that the amount of electricity or rather efficency of solar panels decreases with time... Keep it up can't wait for more videos ;)
Well I do mention it briefly but yeah they do decrease by a few percent over their 25-year lifespan. But honestly it was just a few percent and I think inflation would counter-act that technically. But feel free to add that to the calculator, that would be cool :)
Good stuff. I'm sure what country you live in greatly affects whether it makes sense or not (just live EVs). I haven't gotten any actual quotes, so this is just a quick search but quotes for 8kwh seem to average around 2X what you have listed around $15k-$16k+ which makes the BE time of somewhere around 20-25 years. Certainly, there are games to be played if you can choose different power plans (where you pay a different rate at different hours) and in some states like California it might make sense when power costs are high. Either way, thanks for the vid!
I'm getting solar now, just waiting for the instalation. Covering my roof I get enough power for normal life and a little extra for mining. Much more power in the summer.
Great video. Still waiting. Solar panels get better every year. By the time you pay it off it may be obsolete. Can invest that money in pokt nodes and make more money instead without an roi. The key is getting a tax incentive or something. Or maybe write it off as a business expense? Would want a 2year roi , then maybe.
Great topic. recenlty been looking into more solar myself. GPU mining running costs have almost doubled since December. I'm in the Uk, was 16p per kWh, risen to 28p per kWh and another rise is coming later in the year. I currently have a 4kw system, and it made 3600kWh over the last year. This is effectively saving £1000 on the new 28p rate. Planning on adding around 16kw of solar panels. so this will be generating way more than I'm using at the time. No incentive to sell back to the national grid. So my best option is to store it. Looking at 75kWh of storage, this is the expensive part. My miners are using 3.5kw, which is 84kWh in a day of usage. The panels wil generate around 100kWh on a good day (based on the best days of my 4kw system). This will mean on good days I can run the miners for 24hours, we may get many good days together. I could also go further of powering down the miners depending on battery level, so buying in no power from the grid at all to mine.
My father installed the solar panels and the invertor, 4kw, all for just 1600$. I was getting about 5 hours of sunlight in February in sunny days, so even in winter you can get a good output. Really promising now that the gpu prices are dropping.
And if you look from the central european side at the price, which would be 40 cents on average, with a price tag of 16000, your Years of ROI (Return of Investment) would lower to just 3,6 years... If that's not worth it, then i don't know. So thanks that you broke that down for us.. it's most definitely a great consideration!
I said it before and will say it again. You are awesome and your excel sheets are pure gold. Bless you and your family. Fyi, I'm only 3 mins into the video at the time of writing this
Keep in mind the days of sunlight differ thru out the year. Example, in May you may get 20% more than Jan. You likely need to average your solar cells and battery based on additional assumptions for use.
If your in florida and thinking about solar, you will want to jump on it now! They are passing a bill where you only sell back at half the rate you pay to get power. But if you already have a system, you keep your current agreement for 20yrs. Right now its a 1:1 ratio, next year its 1: .75, and the following year 1: .5, then its their avoided cost.
This is why I'm planning on diversifying my income and also going for a renewable energy. Coins can hit the clouds or may tank. But I know for a certain I will need more and more energy going forward.
I like your forward thinking and examples.. I totally agree, I think you spilt the risk go for the biggest amount you can afford to reduce your energy costs with panels and backfill with crypto mining.. also battery storage even though expensive for 'whole home' is pretty expensive you can dyi build and dedicate your own inverter and batteries to some solar for mining through the night to reduce some of your mining power expenses.. some (maybe most states) also offer cheaper rates on different times per day for selling energy back to the grid. produce and store during off peak and sell back during peak.. or just use your battery on peak times so you have low grid to no peak grid reliance when the sun goes down.
You also need to add that if the electricity used was for mining which makes money over the cost, the panels would pay off even quicker?! Right? So instead of X cost per day leaving the rest as profit, it’s all profit as soon as the elec has mined the cost of the panels not the cost of the electric produced equals the cost of the panels, as cost vs profit, profit is higher, so it should be how long does it take to pay them off in crypto gains, which could be even quicker with price discovery.
quick tip you can upload your video with no black bars on top and bottom and youtube will ad them automatically I have ultra-wide monitored and having black bars on top is pretty annoying XOXO
Nice video, Sebs. But Just a thought, where is the battery change/maintenance consideration? The strongest battery can run with everyday usage with complete drain out and charge it next day to full maybe five years. Even if you get 48 volt batteries instead of 12 volt ones, still too many batteries and too much of maintenance and a dedicated place for its usage. Is it worth for such a high electricity demand if someone wants to go fully on solar?
So what you are saying is, we are going to use solar systems to mine sunlight and power our gpu to mine crypto. not to mention, solar system installation have steadily been cheaper as I've check. Mmmm yup I'm in, make sense! My only problem is that our house is surrounded by fruit bearing trees that fall over our roof. I don't know how durable the panels are
Thank you for the topic and the spreadsheet. I was thinking if going solar worth it for me specially I pay low electric rate (about $0.05/kwh). I think buying GPUs is better options for me.
I only looked into them a bit but they seem to not last very long since they have moving parts and require a lot of maintenance. I think they’re o it a good option if you get almost no sun at all
Thank you for this video Seb, this is amazingly helpful. I’m looking at buying a house soon and want to build a solar mining shed if it’s profitable for me and this is a great guide for thinking about this. I have questions about how the hardware/electricity actually works for a hybrid setup. I.e. if you are powered by solar battery mining and that energy is depleted, how does it automatically switch to using energy from your electricity provider to avoid maintenance and downtime in the conversion?
Im looking more into the Tesla Tiles. The problem is the battery bank they want 11k. No sure about the battery since I will burning all solar power generated.
You haven't add any cost for batteries which is then most expensive part of any solar system. So how are you planning to store 12,614Kwh to power the rigs ?
It's a calculator. You can add whatever price you want. If you need to buy batteries because you absolutely want to be off grid or you can't sell back the overflow to your provider for credits, then add the extra cost of batteries when you calculate.
you dont necessarily need 8000w for solar, also the one time payment will save you monthly payments which allow more fiat for more cards anyway rather than cashing crypto from mining to compensate the energy usage if what im saying makes sense to you

Nice video seb. Imo buy solar and gpus!
Glad you liked the video! Good luck!
Thank you so much for the job done, awesome content.
quick tip you can upload your video with no black bars on top and bottom and youtube will ad them automatically I have ultra-wide monitored and having black bars on top is pretty annoying XOXO
some realistic accurate calculations based on what we know.
@Sebs that $8000 price is a DIY price right? Seems like a low price compared with some quotes im getting in Arizona
Great content Seb.
Seems interesting but Vancouver gets 192 days of rain 70+ more than Ohio.
Morning Sir, really good comparison. But I would like to see what could be the profitability with and w/o solar panels. It will be really interesting.
My solar array gets installed the last week of April
So what you are saying is, we are going to use solar systems to mine sunlight and power our gpu to mine crypto. not to mention, solar system installation have steadily been cheaper as I've check. Mmmm yup I'm in, make sense! My only problem is that our house is surrounded by fruit bearing trees that fall over our roof. I don't know how durable the panels are
I got you guys the research on solar panels as promised
Seb your the best man! 🤙🏻
Thank you for the topic and the spreadsheet. I was thinking if going solar worth it for me specially I pay low electric rate (about $0.05/kwh). I think buying GPUs is better options for me.
25years != 7 years
hi bro many peoples talking about Lhr version 1 and Lhr version 2 GPUs, what is the difference between them? is both GPUs worth it for all algorithm ?
Hey Seb great video! Now what about wind turbines and water wheels⚡️😁
I only looked into them a bit but they seem to not last very long since they have moving parts and require a lot of maintenance. I think they’re o it a good option if you get almost no sun at all
Buying solar panels is a no brainer hedge for miners!
Today installing solar panels!!!!
Awesome! And thank you for being so early to the video! :) Good luck with your panels!
Awesome break down
Good job. Thank you. I prefer solar.
Im looking more into the Tesla Tiles. The problem is the battery bank they want 11k. No sure about the battery since I will burning all solar power generated.
Instead of getting a solar setup, i am thinking of moving next to seb and running a pigtail from his setup ;)
Hahaha :D
You haven't add any cost for batteries which is then most expensive part of any solar system. So how are you planning to store 12,614Kwh to power the rigs ?
It's a calculator. You can add whatever price you want. If you need to buy batteries because you absolutely want to be off grid or you can't sell back the overflow to your provider for credits, then add the extra cost of batteries when you calculate.
My job is to do projects. Photovoltaic central. I look like it's another energy mining rig
nice video always
you dont necessarily need 8000w for solar, also the one time payment will save you monthly payments which allow more fiat for more cards anyway rather than cashing crypto from mining to compensate the energy usage if what im saying makes sense to you
