I'm doing a project for my college animation class and the voxel and heat map part was good enough for me to use in this little project, im sure when I need to do a serious rig I will watch the rest of the series
try importing the mesh again, make sure to reset the xform if needed. Than you can skin wrap that new mesh onto the old mesh, so it gets the same skin. Now it should work on that new mesh. I hope this helps!

Only mirroring bones for some reason does not work
Mirroring Verts isn't working. Is there something else that needs to be 'enabled' or 'disabled'?
