      @trollpolice101 Haha, don't stress about it. Spoilers incoming for VLR and ZTD.
      I wouldn't say you ruined my experience at all. At that point, I'd only got Clover's end. Reading your comment then, I thought I'd been spoiled. But there was way more I had to find out. You were just vague enough that nothing major was spoiled except for Sigma being Zero.
      I didn't know how or why Sigma was Zero, or his appearance. Or K's identity. Or Tenmyouji's + the old woman's identity. Or what Luna was. The bombs being a plot point, and the passwords being for them. That we're on the Moon. Dio's purpose and links to an organisation.
      For what it's worth, I agree with you on what you were originally saying. I didn't think the pacing of puzzles was as good as 999 - I picked these games up for the puzzles, but I found myself getting annoyed and wanting to ditch them for more story. Some of the puzzles were annoying in that 'try the same routine over and over to get a right solution' way. The algorithmic or 'rubik's cube' type puzzles aren't my jam. Still, the reveals made it worth it (even if there's some contradictory logic there).
      ZTD's Zero reveal is a bit less satisfying, but I actually really like that too. The puzzles weren't paced there well either, though, and they generally felt way weaker.
      Wasn't a fan of the pod room and the whole alien technology, and might just be me being unreasonable, but Sigma and Diana having Phi makes the interactions in VLR even more uncomfortable. With how the writer loves R34 and stuff, it's a bit.... ehhh. And how Diana was drunk and how Sigma didn't want it at first either? Bit uncomfortable. It was surprising and a great reveal first time round, but when I thought about it, I got a bit grossed out.
      Anyway, I didn't hate ZTD like I was expecting. I really liked it. Weakest of the trilogy, still enjoyable. And out of the newbies, I really liked Diana and really loved/hated Eric for being such a dick.

    25:31 i personally i disagree with this statement.
    as someone who has played tons of VNs, unvoiced protagonist is very common even with the fact that the previous game has the protagonist voiced. i actually played the original 999 years ago on my ds and replyed the 999 (voiced version) when they released nonary games on steam, and its actually my first time of playing VLR. my point is that junpei being voiced while sigma are not doesnt actually raise a suspicions AT ALL, at least in my case. and frankly its great that it doesnt because the twist REALLY blew my mind just like the first time i played 999.
    i always thought sigma being unvoiced at first is just a a developer choice, having a unvoiced protagonist helps immerse the player into the character. and frankly it works, i felt a sense of connection more to sigma than to junpei in 999. in both games, i played with japanese VAs, and after hearing junpei voice, you can guess what his base personality is like, but by having sigma unvoiced, his personally is something more like based of your choice which fits well with the concept of game where you either pick ally (be good) or betray (be bad). to think he used this common VN trope into a major plot twist, uchikoshi is something else. that man is genius

    • @KayJulers
      @KayJulers  4 роки тому +30

      The primary reason I noted that example is because I had a group of three friends play through the Nonary Games version of 999 and then transition into VLR right after. Each of them commented pretty quickly on the lack of a voice actor for Sigma and how they found it strange. I definitely had to wrestle them out of any conclusions on that one lol.
      I also think that Sigma being unvoiced was a developer choice, and a strong one at that. Even with Junpei, even though I like the voice actor and there are some incredibly strong deliveries, I think the lack of a voice in the DS version allows for the player to feel more connected to him.

      As someone who played the steam version first. I just sorta shrugged it off, thinking that maybe the creators wanted to make you really get into the protag role by making them unvoiced… I only started drawing suspicion in the VERY late game.

      it was an extra scene that was merely a 4th wall break. Not an actual plot line.

    • @zugetzuzu
      @zugetzuzu Рік тому +16

      Spoilers for the 999 trilogy and AI Somnium:
      It's implied throughout the multiple Zero escape (and even further backed up with AI Somnium files if it's connected to the 999 universe) games that Kyle is essentially the one actually making all the decisions of all character we as players control (and that the characters justify their choices to themselves, al be it often confused about it). That's why in Zero time dilemma they bring up the Alien hand syndrome. It's not really Diana and Carlos (and possibly Q? IDK about this one) making the decision but Kyle.
      If the 999 universe is at all connected to the AI somnium universe (vague connections to 999 but it's probably not connected) then it's also implied that the Kyle is "the player", aka you, an entity who is refereed to as "a Frayer, someone who can transcend the logic of causality (... within the world of these games)". It is also implied (or outright stated) that some characters are aware/deeply believe (and is proven to be correct) that they live in a simulated world. That we, as a frayer, are "an intelligence of a higher order" (to draw back to the termite example in the hologram) that created the worlds of 999 and AI somnium and can truly appreciate it's beauty.
      PS: In the Frayer ending, notice how Tokiko is talking to the player and refers to Ryuki as a 3rd non-participant even though he(us) was the one who walked up to Tokiko.

    • @handsoaphandsoap
      @handsoaphandsoap 3 місяці тому +1

      999 is more successful imo because it works as a self-contained story and it’s much more of a grounded narrative with lower and more personal stakes. VLR suffers a bit from being a midquel, it needs 999 to serve as set up and it ends essentially on a to be continued, which would’ve been fine if ZTD hadn’t been kinda ass and undermined what VLR set up. The stakes in VLR are much grander, but that also makes them a lot more impersonal and therefore not as emotionally resonant. “Save the world” being the driving force in a story is always a hard sell as audiences find it hard to get emotionally invested in such a large scale concept as the whole entire fictional world so they likely won’t care as much as the smaller stakes of “save this character that you’ve spent an entire game with”. VLR does it decently well though as we get to experience the aftermath of the world’s destruction so first-hand so we get to see what’s at stake but it’s nonetheless not as emotionally resonant as 999 just by the nature of the two stories.

I absolutely loved the sense of mystery and danger, the relationships, alliances and conflicts between the characters, and all the clever twists, reveals and surprises the game kept coming up with. I wish I could feel the same way. I love so much of the game, but I got caught in the 3DS save glitch on 3 separate playthroughs back to back to back, my first time getting through and had to reset every time. That hurts when you're 30 hours into a visual novel, and then about 15 hours in the next 2 times. My 3DS battery was ruined after that cause I refused to turn my system off on my 4th attempted playthrough where I was too scared to save, but I was sadly really soured by that point from sheer frustration. I think enough time has passed that maybe I'll be able to give it another go, though. I really want a chance to experience this game without the frustration of having to go through the first half of the game 4 times in a row. Clearly I loved the game though, since I didn't give up after all of that, lol

    On the subject of Kyle being used as a spare to secure the success of the project, you realize he's completely useless in that regard. Even if Kyle had continued Sigma's research and set up the project, Sigma dying early would've caused a paradox or at the least a very different future. Even assuming young Sigma and Kyle could actually switch consciousness, Kyle's lack of experience and pre-existent knowledge would almost certainly lead to him failing his mission in the past.

    The most mindblowing twist for me was for sure the reveal of the real. Sigma, even though, in hindsight, you could have figured it out early on, but I didn't, which is why it had a huge impact on me.
    Also, even though Junpei's and Akane's story, especially the "reunion" in the Q-room, were extremly sad, the most heartbreaking thing overall for me was the talk with Luna in the garden. Even betraying her for the bad endings felt absolutely terrible, as she's just such a pure and good-hearted soul, that you just constantly want to protect her... and then you find out, what she really is and you just can't do anything, but to listen to a crumbling robot hugging you, as she listens to her little music box, crying in fear of dying and just wanting to be alive... that is one of the saddest things I've ever witnessed and it really broke my heart..

      Remember that "Memo" section you could write notes to yourself in?
      If you leave that stuff written there while you play & come back
      to it after you've jumped to different timelines several times,
      the text there will actually become _broken and faded!_
      After all, you can't remember _everything_ when you jump,

    There was an ova that released on a dedicated website for vlr (which is now dead, but people unashamedly uploaded it to UA-cam like old newgrounds animations) it does it's job like the pokemon mystery dungeon ova to sell the people on the concept of the game. It does a good job covering the first hour of the game in a non spoilerly way, if a little stiff due to exposition dumping in less than ten minutes.
    Now the ova hints that Sigma and Phi went through the chromatic door with Luna (they skip over going through the door to the lounge and go straight into the ambidex game after clover wakes up.) In the ova they do show the dead old woman in the ambidex room.
    I saw the ova before playing both 999 and vlr. After 999 I went straight into vlr, so I went through the chromatic door with Alice (Naked Egyptian priestess???) And was insanely confused as to where the dead old woman went when she didn't show up.

    I just finished VLR and I went to go watch this video. My opinions of the game was I preferred 999 a bit more but I watched this video. Main reason I prefer 999 is because I have a hard time connecting to Sigma as the protagonist as I did with Junpei. I don’t know why though, but I still think the game is AMAZING. I enjoyed it a lot! I was stunned by the twists even though it was at 1 am when I finished it. I played the 3DS version but I knew the game breaking glitch. I only saved in the A and B warehouses because of that reason. I played 999 on my DS because my friend gave me a copy. I’m going to get ZTD after March.

    The one thing I remember most about my first playthrough of this is holding onto the name Zero The Third - even as all the characters call him Zero Junior, I made sure to remind myself that there was a Zero the Second as well. And wouldn't you know, that ended up mattering. This is my favorite game in the series, even though I do think 999 is a tighter narrative.

    ZTD is amazing. I want to say its just as good as 999, but I think the ending is sequel baiting a bit too hard and sets up a ton of mind blowing things that just don't come to be. Otherwise, it hits everything that 999 did. Great story, mind blowing twists, excellent music, excellent mood, etc.
    Do you think Tenmyouji changes his vote because he also got info through the Field?
    14:48 Akane's wearing a ring similar to the engagement ring Junpei gets for her in ZTD. That's a neat detail.
    K saying Kronk quotes is something I didn't know I needed.
    I agree that Radical-6 is pretty horrifying. The way it fucks with your perception of the world and then makes you kill yourself is extremely dark. Its very disturbing for both victims and others around them. 22:37 I mean, the scene speaks for itself! But the reporter killing herself on camera is what really hammered it home on how awful this future really was.

    one thing i’m kind of confused about is luna in the clover ending. in luna’s ending, we learn that she is a gaulem and that when she was “murdered” by clover, she was actually alive and fully conscious but shut herself down to appear to be “dead.” however, in the clover ending we see luna, on the ground, presumably unconscious and covered in blood. does this mean that luna did not really die in the clover ending and that she was alive the whole time and was the only survivor? also would this mean that she had pretended to have radical-6 so that nobody would suspect she was a robot? so many questions

    At last I can finally see see this and the 999 videos.
    Gotta say love the editing tricks you did in both to represent the games gimmick and the analysis in general.
    Tbh the ending left me a little sad because as the characters said the secret scene they will be forced to live in that world, of course that means not that much for the ones who escaped they could live a normal life. But for all the other routes where they die in horrible ways those timelines will keep existing as confirmed by this time system and this is not like 999 where death wasn't really planned and clover going mental for example wasn't a part in zero plan. But here it was, like that makes the ending even more impatfull but knowing that ztd doesn't close that much from what I heard and all of this game was just "necessary sacrifices" For that game to happen man man.
    On another note I was surprised by the characters, I was told they didn't have time because the plot was the focus but I think is well balanced between the two.
    Well in conclusion thanks for presenting me for the series and doing these goated as always

    Played both 999 and VLR and something stops me from playing ZTD every time I try to (it's just not like the previous two)... VLR is by far the best this franchise has to offer. The experience of VLR is something that completely sucked me in and I felt completely empty when it ended, in a good way. I just didn't want to play any other game for like 3-4 months. Nothing could come even close to the experience and the feelings I had with VLR! Nothing... So, I touched another game after some months.

    to get around my partner being suspicious of VLR whenever they get to it, I seeded a little lie to them.
    999 got full voice acting in the Nonary games edition
    So I said "They reused the voice acting from the original VLR for this version, so the main character still doesn't have a voice" framing it as some cost cutting measure
    I often do this with mystery games to throw them off the trail, (and also with that one moment in Bug Fables with the red crystal, telling them about it at the start of the game made that moment oh so much sweeter)

Both are key factors in quantum physics, specifically Schrödinger's equation that tracks probability of particle movement, i.e. measuring the likely state of the cat being alive or dead before opening the box and observing it. That guess is the best hope of finding something without directly observing it. Sigma and Phi are the best hope of finding if there's a way to save humanity before the end.

    5:49 I'm not a mathematician, but isn't the "ideal" purely logical option to pick Confess every time?
    If there's no way to communicate or collaborate with the partner, the only thing you can base your decision-making on is whether the partner will pick Silent or Confess and plan accordingly relative to those choices.
    If they choose Silent, 1 year is better than 2 years so you should pick Confess. If they pick Confess, 10 years is still better than 15 years so you should still pick Confess.
    Now, granted this doesn't account for things like morality or empathy or self-sacrifice which is what the whole subplot progression with Luna is all about. Am I getting this right?
