Stinky pinkies. Thats pink salmon out in Valdez, Alaska. We call that dog food out here. A lot of the pink salmon caught out here goes to China 🇨🇳. The real fun is when the silvers start running. Out at the Gulkana, and Klutina river are where the reds, and kings run and those are even better eating.

Direct from Sitka, AK here is the story. Salmon bearing eggs swim from the ocean to the rivers where they spawn, then die because that's a salmon"s life! Some are caught by fisherman. Some are caught by bears who live here and depend on fish so they hibernate. Our bear also eat vegetation, but if the fish are scarce, as they were last year, the bear become desperate and seek food in the inhabited areas, raiding the garbage. They perish on plastic and other inedibles or are shot by frightened locals. We have a bear sanctuary for injured or orphaned bear, but fishing is a primary industry. If you want to see salmon in the store at a good price, wish us a good season.

It's a keystone specie. They die after spawning usually and those that die provide nutrients for the rivers, other animals, etc. It's not wasted. Research the life cycle of a salmon, you'll understand that even those that didn't make it provide value to the land, other animals, etc.

Why not sell it for a living? For tourism purposes only?

They do sell it. It's a huge commercial business. Probably many of the tinned pink salmon you see in the supermarket came from here.
