    I’m way south of you. When we make nucs it is with packed double deeps. Strip down the hive to a few frames of bees 🐝 and drop in a queen cell. 8 nucs from one hive. Drop in cells and recombine the ones that don’t turn out.

    Really love following your Beekeeping adventures. Please keep them coming. Curious as to what a story frame is. Thanks!

      Hi Robert. It's just a partially foundationless frame where they can build drone comb. I learned that this frame will tell you a story about the colony's health and well-being so I started calling it a story frame. I talked about it in one of my recent vlog videos.

    Great to see your healthy bees! The contrast against rain clouds makes them very visible in the video, so many of them! Hope they are rebounding, looks like they are, good luck!

    It’s great to hear meadow larks! Haven’t heard one for years. Thank you!

    Brad we were wondering what the bees do with the wax you drop down in the box? Do they use it or drag it out or maybe just leave it alone? Thanks again for sharing, you’re an awesome friend for helping your fellow beek! 💞💕

      Thanks, Meloney. They sometimes use a little of it, I mainly do that because I shouldn't be tossing it on the ground and I usually don't carry a container in which to put it.

    Just found your channel and really enjoy it. Can you please tell me what a story frame is. I'm a new beekeeper this year. Going into my first winter in Massachusetts with 7 hives. I'll miss them the next 5 months!

      Hi, Paula! Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoy my channel. I know what you mean about missing the bees over the winter, that's the worst part for me too. Here's the story on the story frame, cheers! ua-cam.com/video/3zZAI2mxDGs/v-deo.html

    As always enjoy your videos. Do you have any suggestions on cleaning the queen catcher marker device? Mine is all dirty also and can’t see if I have the queen captured or not. I like the device but need to clean it up.

    • @ThatBeeMan
      @ThatBeeMan  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching, Tim! Mine got just as messy. I just took it apart and washed it with dish soap and scraped off the propolis and wax. I wiped it all with a paper towel and re-lubed the door slides with vaseline. Give that a try. Mine cleaned up nicely so I can now see the queen.

    What is the make up of your 5 frame nucs? It looks like you're using 2 frames of brood, each with an extra shake of bees. The rest of the frames are honey/pollen? Any foundation or empty drawn comb?

    • @ThatBeeMan
      @ThatBeeMan  2 роки тому

      These nucs are only one brood frame, so as to maximize the number of nucs for the amount of brood available. I like to provide some open space for laying and some "honey". We will be having a small nectar and pollen flow so the nuc doesn't need to be too well stocked in that way.

    So how long after you make the nuc before inserting a mated queen? Do you check for queen cells being formed?
    Hope your weather keeps improving. Take care and it's never boring. Ty

    • @ThatBeeMan
      @ThatBeeMan  2 роки тому

      I have no specific time when I introduce a new queen. If I'm introducing a mated queen, I can do that any time from immediately to two weeks later. The caged queen will have a slow-release candy to give her a good start. I have to choose my time based on thigs like, checking the nuc for rogue cells and moving them to their new home. Disturbing a colony with a freshly released queen can have disastrous results for the queen as the bees can spontaneously kill her if they are stressed at all.

    I’m confused, what’s a story frame? I first thought it was a drone frame by the space that it was in, but you have a specific frame your using.

      Hi Todd. Don't be confused. I explained it in a recent video. It's just a partially foundationless frame where they can build drone comb. I learned that this frame will tell you a story about the colony's health and well-being so I started calling it a story frame.

    Why are you making so many small nukes

    • @russellkoopman3004

      It is for a desperate customer that begged him for some bees since he had terrible winter losses.

    • @ThatBeeMan
      @ThatBeeMan  2 роки тому +2

      A friend who is a larger commercial beekeeper had a terrible winter and while there was no begging involved, I was touched by his situation and offered to do what I could. This is the best way to increase his colony numbers, under the current circumstances.

      @@ThatBeeMan I understand I would have helped to if I could I have heard some fellows had caught a really hard time with the winter. Problem I was having too much nectar and not enough frames then when I get the frames it dried up and got really hot
