On the early days of Crystal Clear and Concerto Moon, you could say he was similar to Hurry Scuary's Hideaki Nakama (another great guitarist). I would say the best example of a Malmsteen clone is Kelly Simonz or Katsu Ohta. They both have recorded and toured with former singers of Malmsteen (e.g. Mark Boals).
