Sorry about the audio. We forgot to hit record on our Mics so we had to use the Camera mics instead. We REALLY liked the Ford Mach-e but its just not made for winter. What do you guys think?
Well, here in the heart of almost-Arctic Quebec - normal winter temps of -20C and colder - the Mach-E is very very popular among my neighbours and everyone loves theirs. Really - it is hard to go wrong with any EV - but the Mach-E is super popular.
@@brucemacneil I love the mach-e but compared to an ev with a heat pump in cold temps having a heat pump makes a big diff. Even little things like warming up the car is much faster with a heat pump. I'm 100% open to getting one as soon as Ford puts one in. It's definitely one of my fav EVs that I've driven. How long have you had yours for?
I dunno. I live in MN and charge in my garage overnight. I have the ER version but I have no problem getting where I need to go in an average day on a full charge. If you are the kind of person that puts tons of hours of driving in everyday, an EV is not for you. That's not a Mach-E issue, it's an EV issue. My friends with Teslas get roughly the same amount of distance on a full charge in winter that I do. 🤷♀
It's not that that particular car isn't made for winter, it's that electtic cars arent' made for that. You come off as an absolute couple of drama people.
I’m from Toronto. Just picked up the Mach E a few weeks ago and have been driving it non stop. Including a couple of trips to Bobcaygeon. I was similarly worried about winter range hit, but I’m happy to report it’s not bad at all. The range hit due to the lack of heat pump is over exaggerated. I had a Model Y before, and it saw about 30% range hit. The Mustang sees about 35% at most. It is nowhere near 50% like the video claims. Winter range depends on a lot of factors, - how you’re driving, if you’re blasting the heat, etc. But preconditioning my car, setting temp to 25, fan on 3, I consistently get at least 250KM at 80% charge. If I drove more conservatively and turn down the fan, I could easily get 275KM. That is in line with the Model Y. If you’re doing your math….you drove roughly 200KM both ways and had 100KM left. That’s about 300KM range - and about 35% range loss. How are you calculating 50% range loss? Bottom line, the range loss on the Mach E is about the same as Model Y. It is not a cause for concern.
Not sure what battery the have in the video (SR or ER). But the SR doesn't get to 400 km range even in summer in the first place. More like 370 km. Long range even in winter should be close to 300 km. Maybe 250 if you get really unlucky. I drive a 21 model SR RWD, so in my 3rd Winter with the Mustang now. Short range driving really kills range. But the 100km trip? That shouldn't be an issue.
I was very confused by this too. They had plenty of range left. I just did a similar drive in my Mach E in summer weather and my range was about what they said in this video. I drove it my normal commute for another two days before charging.
I live in Minnesota, it gets cold, -10 or colder, i drive at least 60 miles a day, dropping the kid to school, work, errands, work is 30 miles 1 way, i charge to 90% at the end of the day i am left with about 60%-70% depending on how much heat i run, i dont understand how you get such bad mileage..
Entertaining video, but the Mach-E does in fact have a "thermal management" heat pump system. It's not quite as efficient as the Tesla system, but it's there. Watch Munro Live's breakdown comparing the two systems titled, "Mach-E Thermal System Part 2" I drove my 2023 Mach-E GT in the sub-zero temps here in Nebraska this winter and had no issues.
The anxiety is not what we were left with but not knowing what we would be left with since the battery was draining super fast. Unfortunately in the cold without a heat pump its hard to get accurate range results.
@@MatthewMonizYou are putting WAY too much weight on the estimated range. The range is being adjusted pretty constantly. When traveling you should be using navigation, which will tell you where you need to charge (and adjust if your consumption goes up). I appreciate the anxiety, but honestly with time you trust it more.
Yeah EV owners wouldn't have considered that particularly low. Maybe they blasted the heat and had a lead foot, so they saw the number decrease super fast, but the nav would have let them know they were fine.
I’ll expand a bit, though: yes, a heat pump would be better and I hope Ford offers the Mach-E with one soon. And I’ve had two week-long trips where I rented Model Ys and while I admire what Tesla does I still MUCH prefer my Model Y. And, living in Whitehorse it’s good to have a local dealer where I can get service.
I had a Lyft ride in one of these and loved it. However since then I’ve heard lots of bad things about it. I’m disappointed. I want it to be a great car.
I don't know how I am going to get rid of this car. Bought the GTP last year. Had to get towed recently because the e brake would not release. Yesterday I got the powertrain warning and again I can expect the car to be gone for a while. Starting to get pissed. ford should not sell a car if it has these defects. And it's so expensive. I never had any issues with any new cars that I owned. Just ford,
Depends on the type of charging you're using. If its supercharging you can go from 20 to 80% in 30 mins. If you're charging at home using Level 2 around 5-7 hours.
That’s the problem with this Mach-E, that’s why I got a Tesla Model Y RWD living in Montreal heat pump is a must!! Winter put 19” setup which is a little less EPA rating at 394km and have the 20” setup for summer cause it does look better even though I lose range at 364km. But overall Tesla holds up the value a Mach-E 2022 is selling at half the price and NEW are just sitting at dealerships especially selling base price at 59k
Regarding your comments of preconditioning, reports are that it helps DRASTICALLY. If you set a departure schedule what happens is the car powers on about 1 hour ahead to warm the battery and then just before it starts the cabin.
I have one it gives u almost 4 hours of drive time off one charge which is the same mileage i get out of a v6 toyota with a full tank of gas. This is a perfect commuter car. I have a back up gas car for long trips
I don't get it, you had plenty of range left when you got back. And how is 36% ending low? That's almost 40%...more than "a quarter of a tank" if it was a gas car.
So let me do the math here. You started out with a 417km estimated range and drove approximately 210km and made it back with 100km (or 80km) remaining. Sounds to me like you had an effective range of 290km which is about 70% of the original range estimate… Doing the math the other way, you drove about 200km and used 64% of your battery capacity. Solving for your total range, you end up with about 312km or about 75% of the original estimate. That seems like a far cry from “over 50%”. Also, not saying heat pumps aren’t awesome, but they’re also not magic. They get less efficient as the outside temperature drops so there is a limit below which it’s actually better to have a conventional resistive heater like the Mach E does.
Mach E always under estimates its range I’ve noticed it may say you won’t make it but If you drive conservative, you should get + 40 miles in some cases
packing a bunch of people and snow gear in a car will also affect range. Don't jack the heat up to 75 either.. Evs do require additional thought and consideration. I have a Mach-e and live in MN. It's not bad at all if you understand how things work.
I've owned Mach-E in Winnipeg since 2021. I rarely go out on a road trip in winters and range anxiety is not an issue for me. But those who drive long distances (200km) upwards in winters, this car is not for you. I think charging at tesla superchargers would really overcome that issue. I really love this car and one of the best vehicles I've ever owned/driven!
Very valuable video Right the car looks good but I live in Chicago so it turns out this car is not for me with very cold winters & working late night in bad neighborhoods with no charging stations
I've had an MME for two winters now, and range is not terrible in the winter compared to others. Heat pump would be nice to get a few extra kms in the cold. You need to set a destination in the Ford Nav app for the Guess-o-Meter to work more accurately. The car doesn't know if you will be driving in city or on highway until you do that and will only give you a guess based on mixed driving. In your case, you were all highway and setting the destination would have been far more accurate. As for back seat head space, it is far better than the MY. I can't sit in the back seat of the MY without my head hitting the roof but I can sit comfortably in the back of the MME. I've ridden in both and the MME ride is much nicer than the very stiff MY IMHO.
As for the ride, I the Magnaride in my GT Perf and it is the best I have ever ridden in. Once you've driven a magnaride, you'll throw the rocks at the rest.
I had a ‘21 Mach-E Select that I loved, and had planned to keep for the next several years. But when the Canadian price cuts were announced this week I figured I could get a Premium Extended Range with the bigger battery for roughly the same payment. So, yeah, I just picked up a ‘23 Premium ER on Wednesday.

There's two prerequisites before buying an EV. #1 Are you a home owner so you can install a charging station? #2 Do you already own an gas vehicle and the EV will be your second vehicle? If you can't answer YES to both of those questions, absolutely DO NOT buy an EV. Even if you have an old beater ICE car, that's good enough to have in case you can't charge. It is a ROYAL pain in the ass to rely on public charging stations. People are big time assholes and park ICE cars at charging stations and simply don't care to leave it open. I've been to 5 different charging stations and was unable to charge. #1 the charging stations that worked at the first place I went to were all full. The rest of the stations said "NETWORK ERROR" and did not function. I went to numerous other ones and somebody had vandalized/cut all of the charging cables making it impossible to charge. Talk about RANGE ANXIETY. Man, it SUCKS like you have NO IDEA! I love EV's, but charging them and getting good range is so hard a lot of the times, it's not even funny. I wouldn't fathom doing a long road trip in one of these. Trust me... KEEP YOUR GAS CAR!
Great video! We have owned a Mach e GT for over 2 years now (a 2021 model year), and our biggest complaint is the cold weather range. We experience the same as you, at least a 40% reduction in range as compared to warm weather driving. Otherwise we absolutely love the car.
I have the Mach E here in Scotland and yes in winter it definitely looses a lot of range due to no heat pump. Not a big deal for me as we don’t get your temperatures. I have a model 3. Even with perfect conditions, if you're going highway speed you're not going to hit the EPA range. In general, I just have found changing the range from miles to battery percentage made my life way easier.
With Tesla/Ford supercharger integration, charging EVs won't be such a big problem. I think it's a mentality change where, when you charge, you don't charge to 80 percent. Instead, you'd charge 20-40 percent to get where you can charge overnight to your full charge capability.
Plastic is plastic is BS. The interior of the Mach-e feels European exactly b/c the plastics are nice & solid or soft touch. They don't feel scratchy & hollow like many American & Japanese cars.
This car looks so much better than a jellybean inspired Tesla. Too bad for the cold weather range. In this day and age, driving a Tesla is quite passe. It's the standard vehicle for uber and skip the dishes drivers. Mach-E certainly gives you a sense of occasion. But can't deny that the Teslas are great appliances for those who simply doesn't care about style, personality or passion. And that's ok too. I just want my fridge to work.
I love my Mach E, but I live in California and those cold weather slam the range. Since we don't have much winter, it's a great car for California but I wouldn't recommend it for a cold climate, especially with the standard range version. But I do seriously love this car. Fun to drive, comfy, practical, etc.
Great review. Great points about the Mach E. Angie is right though. There are cheap (looking and feeling) plastic, vs premium treated plastic panels. Clearly you guys are looking at a specific price point for your next car, but, Tesla cannot be the only alternative? How about the Audi E Tron Sportback? Coincidentally, the new electric Macan was announced just before I saw this. What's your take on this? Do a video, maybe?
I think she wants to stay around 70K CAD. So Macan/Sportback is definitely off the list unless she goes for a GAS model. We will be doing a video on the Macan hopefully at some point! We do have a ton of other 2024 cars coming in as well. Stay tuned! - Matt
@@WorththewattI think Audi has the Q4 E-Tron , which is sized very similarly to the Model Y and does come with dual motors as well. Anyways. Love the videos and the conversation you guys have with each other.
It is *not* an issue for only cold climates. Mach-e here in AZ did the same on highway drive in 112 degree temp. It’s problematic of course. You simply learn that the car has limitations and plan accordingly.
The heat pumps will not doing any magic about your range. You two have no knowlwdge about EV cars. AS I remember the range you where takling about the Mach E reach about 75 % of it's range, not bad in a cold Winter. Test here in Scandinavia shows that mach E drive about the same Kw/km as ID7 with heat pump. The heat pump can give you about 2 percent extra range. Two ID7 was testes against each other, one with heat pump the other without. The one with the heat pump drove about 20 km longer (13 miles).
Do you really have to have the HVAC set to 22 degrees C (72 for you yanks). It is far cheaper to wear some fleece and turn on the seat and wheel heater. Living in Canada has its BIG advantages (universal healthcare, sane political leaders) but you have real winters.
Complains about range, but shows TPMS alert at the 5:20 mark which is less than 60 miles later. Also complains about temperature, while weating large winter jackets which stops them from getting warmer faster.
I live in Toronto and I have a Mach E standard range with no issues. Maybe the cabin is more insulated without the glass roof not sure but range is not an issue for me. Teslas are so ugly looking that I would sacrifice range anyway to avoid the jelly bean mobile!
This is an interesting video. I haven't once thought about a heat pump. Of course, I live in Southern California. I have 27,000 miles on my Mach-e and am enjoying every bit of it.
As a Mach E owner in GTA I have to say this is just pure BS. So yes she was right when she said it was range shit. Question did you warm up the car before leaving on the trip.
Hey thanks for watching! If she was right as you said why do you feel it’s bullshit? Happy to have a discussion. Also she did precondition the car before taking the trip. Other media companies have reported the same issue. Tesla usually drops about 30% mache is around 50% in similar conditions
You are running in the COLD on a BATTERY made in CHIINA! What did you expect? "Even ICE cars take a range hit in the cold" Surely you joke to compare. Keep drinking that coolaid. It's the standard vehicle for uber and skip the dishes drivers. Mach-E certainly gives you a sense of occasion. But can't deny that the Teslas are great appliances for those who simply doesn't care about style, personality or passion. And that's ok too. I just want my fridge to work.
In Canada, there are still plenty of 2023 models. I bet you can get a big bargain on those
We live in beautiful British columbia mainland ,better for EVs
7:47 😂
You mentioned that the Ionic 5 is no longer on your shortlist, why?
It sucks
Did he say Vegan leather? 😂😵💫
@@IAmAPhanthank you for your support and for watching our videos
@@akertes Keep putting Matt in his place!
Also complains about temperature, while weating large winter jackets which stops them from getting warmer faster.
let's see a c-walk now ya'll
♿️💀😂🤣
I live in Toronto and I have a Mach E standard range with no issues. Maybe the cabin is more insulated without the glass roof not sure but range is not an issue for me. Teslas are so ugly looking that I would sacrifice range anyway to avoid the jelly bean mobile!
This is an interesting video. I haven't once thought about a heat pump. Of course, I live in Southern California. I have 27,000 miles on my Mach-e and am enjoying every bit of it.
Preconditioning would definitely have prevented the issue on that trip.
I wish I could turn it this way so that I could block you while I drive 😂😂😂
Was this Mach-E extended battery car or without?
You guys are great and your editing and camera work is FIERCE! Even with the camera mics, this is so well done! Great job! - Liv
ahhh I found you! Badass tech reviews! Your seasoned skill is evident! - Liv
Thanks Liv much appreciated! Just checked out your channel and there’s lots of good info on there. - Matt
Every EV in North America should come standard with a heat pump and rear heated seats. Heated seats use far less energy than the car's heater
Totally agree!
is this mach e select or premium
As a Mach E owner in GTA I have to say this is just pure BS. So yes she was right when she said it was range shit. Question did you warm up the car before leaving on the trip.
Hey thanks for watching! If she was right as you said why do you feel it’s bullshit? Happy to have a discussion. Also she did precondition the car before taking the trip. Other media companies have reported the same issue. Tesla usually drops about 30% mache is around 50% in similar conditions
can you do a video on the tesla showing you can drive 230km on a 30% charge like you stated in the video.@@Worththewatt
The 2024 has a heat pump 😳
2024 model does not have a heat pump just performance upgrades. I believe the lightning will get it.
You are running in the COLD on a BATTERY made in CHIINA! What did you expect?
"Even ICE cars take a range hit in the cold" Surely you joke to compare.
Keep drinking that coolaid. How is the resale with 25,000 on dealer lots with up to an $8,100 discount just given to dealers to get rid of stock of 335 days worth.
