So correct you are! I used to listen to Dakota and also Earl Bostic. We used to dance to Earl Bostic in some clubs when I was 18. Funny to find out my boyfriend played on some of his recordings and a friend recorded vocally with Bostic. Back to Dakota, she was incredibly talented.

I have her album (CD) she recorded with George Shearing entitled "In The Night", so good it's not funny! I've been hearing her "I Hear Music" being played lately in stores and restaurants. Always makes me smile.

A rare woman who had a precious unique and triumphant sound and resonance in her voice. I grew up hearing my mother immitate her to a tee while my dad too also played Wes Montgomery records in the house and learned how to play his guitar style. Beautiful woman born in June my fav three songs she does 'Cherokee, How Did He Look and Save This Love Affair. ) Thank you for posting this!

Both Dakota Staton and George Sheering were phenomenal entertainers. Dakota Staton's voice and style raised the bar that singers today just can't even get near. In fact, can't even imagine being that talented. I just can'rt express how amazing she was.

I would encourage you to check out the new generation of vocalists such as Veronica Swift, Samara Joy, and Jazzmeia Horn. They are right up there in terms of technical ability!

My sister first played Dakota's music for me in 1958. I was only fourteen and fell in love with her voice. Thank you so much for shearing this. I had been looking for her on UA-cam a few years ago and could not find her. Thank you again.

She looks just like her album covers! I always thought Capitol gave her fabulous covers but that no one could really look like that! She did! Other than gaining some weight she never aged much visually or aurally. Above all, she kept joy in her voice and face. She was magnetic and oh, did she love her fans and treat them WITH love. No one like her.

She had a great voice and fabulous delivery. I believe this was her second album with George Shearing!! I met her many years later at a show she did in Manhattan. She was very nice!!!!

It was Carmen McRae narrating. Cool that she dug Dakota. Of course, I needed no validation, but Dakota did not get the attention she deserved.

I though MS. Staton was far too overlooked. She was a great Singer, Scatter and improvisor! ❤

She never got the recognition she deserved. I rate her well above Ella.

I'm looking at this video and when the narration began, I'm thinking: "Why does it sound as if I hear Carmen McCrae ""narrating?" End of the video, there's Carmen sitting at the piano talking - that was her narrating. Radical!

I have all of her LPs on Capitol Records: THE LATE, LATE SHOW - T-876; IN THE NIGHT (WITH THE GEORGE SHEARING QUINTET) - T-1003; DYNAMIC! - T-1054; CRAZY! HE CALLS ME - T-1170, TIME TO SWING! - ST-1241; MORE THAN THE MOST - ST-1325; BALLADS AND THE BLUES - ST-1387; SOFTLY... - ST-1427; DAKOTA! - ST-1490; 'ROUND MIDNIGHT - ST-1597; DAKOTA STATON AT STORYVILLE - ST-1649. I also attended Dakota Staton's funeral ten years ago. This clip featuring Dakota and George was originally televised on January 7th, 1959, entitled The Timex All-Star Jazz Show. I was going on six years years old at the time. DAKOTA STATON...One of my favorite female singers, and, one of the best of the best...R.I.P.

Yes, I have been in music since I could talk. My sister and I grew up singing together and I also played flute but hated marching band. Wanted to hang with friends at football games. Then concentrated on singing. I went on to solo and worked with many greats. Later studied piano with Dolo Coker in Los Angeles. Gigged in Europe, Vegas and all over West Coast. That was when there was still jazz being played in many venues. Loved Dakota. Had all her albums! Sass was a friend....

Ocnoreen, I know I'm responding to you late, but you're so right about Dakota not getting her due. I am the world's biggest Sarah Vaughan, but even I have to admit that Dakota deserves a place in Sarah's universe.

Trumpsahead, you make me laugh with the hair comment, but I love what you say about the effect of Dakota's voice. There is a clarity and sharpness to its sound, yes, though not as pungent as Dinah Washington's, and there's a pleasing quality to its texture (though not as awesome as Sarah Vaughan's). Still, she masters delivery. I find her performances brilliant, ebullient and perfect.

I'm just expressing a personal preference, that's all. I am not a big Ella fan and don't have any of her recordings. Dakota on the other hand is quite different.
That's what comments are for - expressing personal taste which are not to be out done by correctness.

I have I Hear Music on one of her very early albums, Late Late Show maybe. God she moved me, my hair used to stand up . . . of course, that was long ago, I no longer have hair to stand up for anyone.

Ocnoreen, wow! Your boyfriend played on some of his recordings, and a friend sang with him??? Aren't you connected to the musical empire! You must be in the industry yourself. Refreshing to chat with someone with an insider's perspective--or, at least, with an expert's appreciation.

Why do people always have to rate one singer above, or below, another?
Why can't you simply appreciate what each does in each one's own class? Can't you appreciate an artist for that artist, alone, without comparing one to another?
