Scott, as a past driver of cabovers, the windshields get cracked all the time from items left in the sleeper berth. When you jack the cab up you will have an "idio-second", that's the second you hear the crash against the windshield and remembered your suitcase in the sleeper.
Ah, you remember Dennis Miller's "sniglettes" from the days when Saturday Night Live was funny (mostly). IIRC the exact term was "igno-second" - the interval of time between letting go of the car door and realizing you're locking the keys inside. The emotion that results was called "doomnesty."
My truck driver father: ‘“down the hill in the same gear as you drove up.” He drove a 1963 International gas with the same transmission and two-speed rear axle. Rear axle shifted with the clutch or accelerator. He worked for my maternal grandfather. He had to have driven close to 2,000,000 miles with only one accident. Black ice coming down Beaver Summit in Utah. It was a multi-vehicle accident ahead of him. The highway patrol officer on the scene had his patrol car rear-ended an totaled. My grandfather eventually purchased a set of diesel trucks. My dad, as the senior driver, and longest routes, drove one of them.
@@BusGreaseMonkey I could tell, he looks like he's been through heavy stuff since we last saw him. It's a feeling I deeply understand and also why I always try to voice my appreciation when people share this kind of content. Really helps brighten my day, and I tend to need it.
My Dad drove one of these in the early 70s - truckloads of eggs he delivered- some of them scrambled. Thanks for sharing as it brought back memories of going joy riding with my 2 brothers and Dad when we were about 6, 8, and 9 years old. Hope to see you guys restore that old truck- they'll never make them again in the USA.
I've driven truck for 30+ years and still feel like a kid doing it. I know the feeling Lance! The Transtar cabovers were my 2nd favorite back in the day. 1st would be the K100A
any of us that were preteens in the CB era were in love with it. even at five, I had a handle! didn't get a genuine ride along till my 20's, though. my stepfather inevitably had a coal delivery on Christmas Day, and that was my Christmas treat; sitting in the jumpseat of one of the last of the Mack R's and sipping on a free coffee. still have a couple Trucker albums in my collection; the infamous "Six Days on the Road" collection, and a cash in album from Realistic that's probably rare as hen's teeth by now. I'm hoping I can get something out to the younger truckers so they can experience these classics.
I'm 66 years old & have been driving trucks much of my adult life. Only ever drove one with a 2 stroke. It was an early 70's GMC conventional cab with a single drive axle. I think it was an 8v71. Had a 5 speed transmission with a 2 speed electricly shifted drive axle. I was a relief driver & thet truck's regular driver rarely took a day off. So I didn't get to drive it often. Only diesel in the fleet of 5. I miss that truck.
Double clutch and keep the revs in the sweet spot you just gotta luv a cab over, the they always put a smile on ya dial. New tractor trucks just don't have the same appeal or character let alone HISTORY.
When I was a teenager, I lived near a Kroger distribution center. All the tractors were running 318 Jimmy’s…loved the sound of those running through the gears. Seems like the shifted 3 times just crossing the intersection….
Lance is a cool Dude. Get you a king pin and a piece of flat steal and fabricate something to add weight to the fifth wheel build a cage and put something like a concrete barrier from your local concrete plant. Back in the day you could get air assist for the steering, it was easy to install and if makes a big difference turning the steering wheel. That cab is in excellent shape for the age.
I guess that with no weight on the rear axle tyre pressures could be really low and that might improve traction (and braking on loose?) But I don't suppose the ride would improve that much, but tou never know. I'd be putting a ball on the steering wheel to help with tight turning on the move. Anyway a great little play truck that's worth keeping running.
Started driving in early 80's... GMC "Cracker Box" - doing extended road test after setting the rack/pump. Rear cross member... ...did Scott remove it? or was truck bought missing that vital piece??
Same door handles and Bostrom "Westcoaster" seat as in my Louisville. Looks like Lance went half way down that hill in Georgia overdrive. ?? Yikes. Short tray on the back and it would make a handy service truck.
You guys are trying to shift that like a 4 speed bus. With the 10 speed, there's only about 300 rpm between gears so you need to shift a lot faster. Doesn't help that you can't use the two gears on the far right. Lotsa fun nonetheless.
when driving that cap over you think you front end is in the next lane on the roads on your front end //I had to run 671 at higher R.P.M TO GET FULL POWER pulling a load IN A G.M.C CAP OVER //my first love is the B-61 Mack when you can shift them your machine OPERATOR the Dettroit 318 would scream with durl pipes
Lol, same, first semi cab I tried, I already knew the brake knobs, he didn't think I was gonna tour the Houston neighborhood, with cars on both sides of the streets. Those people were watching me to make a mistake. I'm pretty sure they were looking to get him too.. we never liked your truck & we are looking for a reason. I did good & they couldn't get us. Fuck HOA
When I started trucking in 1981, they told me "If you can't find them grind there gonna make then out of rubber next year" What's going on with the duct tape on the driver door?
Now that bobtail isn't complete without a trailer or some kind of load behind it. Any reason why the seller didn't offer to sell the dump trailer it was hooked up to?
Hi Scott ,no intention to buy that little red trailer that the guy had for may be help you carrying rock for maintaining your road?that sure put you weight on your tractor backwheels instead of going bobtail and jumping like a frog?
A tip of the hat to the old timers that drove these across the USA. That was some real men. Had to be a hard life doing that.
Skill and ability!
Arms of steel they said
My dad drove one of these in the early 70s. He actually let me put it in the ditch once😂😂
Hearing Lance giggle when he gets in! You definitely made his day!
That Steering is a real workout no GYM needed ! Could tell Lance had a great time !
Armstrong power steering
My grandpa had a GMC Astro cab over with a 8v71 in it, you could hear that Detroit screaming a couple miles away on a quiet country evening.
Lance looked right at home in that old Binder!
the smile on that man's face says it all , he had a blast

Nothing like a new toy!!!! its a beautiful truck.
We did a lot of maintenance on it today. A new video tomorrow on it

A bobtail down a steep gravel road is difficult.
@@BusGreaseMonkey and a spring ride single axle bobtail cabinover is even more fun. Breathe on the treadle valve & she'll slide.
That up hill down hill principle is taught in schools.

Love the “Hey Lance”
Well that made Lance's day in a good way.
The sort of "Hey Lance" he enjoys, just look at that grin of a childhood dream being fulfilled :-)
Lance, you drove it like a pro.
Great to see Lance again. Must miss his busses and all the work you put into them.
Keep fighting lance ,onward and upward .don't look back .💪
Four words: Truck Driver Fantasy Camp
Glad Lance enjoyed that drive,. All of my trucks have had power steering. And that short wheel base has to be one ruff ride.

It's awesome to see mates looking after mates.
✌️ Peace
The first semi I drove was a 1979 Kenworth with a 8v92 TA i loved that truck back in 1987. 37 years now driving semi. I am going to retire un 2 weeks
Imagine a life with no log books no emissions laws no flip flops at the truck stop just you and the black dog
You're a good friend Scott,
That Detroit sound never gets old, gives me goose bumps !!!!
...everyone should have at least one friend who can help make a dream come true....
That would make a great skateboard for Lance ! He definitely had fun !
We love Lance
Hey Lance!!!!!
That was great to see Lance happy with driving this COE truck... yup, a fun throw back to earlier days of trucking.
Good job
Awesome to see one of the old trucks again.
Drove one towing a dump trailer that had the same transmission. Fun to drive.
I hope Lance driving the cabover, he looked like he was having fun, keep the clips coming
Totally awesome bro and cheers for making his day. Safe travels. Ken.

MyDad had a Garage business and sold new trucks, Federal's, and serviced what ever showed up . He called the Cab-overs ,'west coasters'.
You could make good money just having us old guys taking it up and down the hill. We would dream back when we were in our 20s.

...did Scott remove it? or was truck bought missing that vital piece??
Scott, you need a necker knob for that thing.
Lovely old beast. When you were following it, are the right rear tyres closer together than the left?. It may be an optical illusion.?.
They call Freightliners Freight Shakers, but the cab over engine models are BONE SHAKERS.
Your fillings will be swapping teeth.... 😁
You need the spinner knob on that steering wheel!
Scott, you could probably charge for rides up and down the hill, and extra for a drive, and make most of your money back! 😊

these trucks were made to shift with out a clutch after you take off ,very fast shift with plenty of rpm

Probably gotta double clutch it alot, the old internationals I drove in the air force were like that

Needs some ballast weight on the back to hold it down.
next a low loader and do your own recovery

Some are storage, some are waiting on parts, some are waiting completion
