  • This year the seasons shifted by about a month. Summer was late to arrive and now it is late to leave. We are taking full advantage of this shift and harvesting some summer crops well into Fall.
We are also making more ground by growing more from out existing space. Where we are not able to grow, we let the pumpkin and squash vines run wild. As a result, we have are largest and most diverse harvest of pumpkins, squashes, and gourds.
The varieties that we harvested this year::
Jack o lantern pumpkins: 'Connecticut Field,' 'Howden,' and a large unknown cream variety from the market
Mini pumpkins: two unknown market varieties
Pie pumpkins: 'Sugar' & 'Winter Luxury'
Squashes: Toisan, 'Black Beauty' zucchini, and a Toisan zucchini hybrid
    Gourds: 'Spinning Top,' Corsican

**In the video I misspoken and said, "as an Earth System SCIENTIST..."
I am not a ES scientist by profession nor formal education. I have some college course work and have studied it over the years. I do understand the principles and mechanics of how the Earth works and I apply that so we can maximize what we can grow.

It was fun growing them and I hope to grow more next year!! Thanks, it has been back and forth with the critters. I don't have a Bruce to gaurd the plants so I'll take all the luck I can get 😉😝

Brian. I had really good success with using the Solar powered animal deterrents I pointed them towards the Peach tree and the corn. I did have one on the grapes, except I decided I'd rather have the corn and soon as I took it down, they stripped all the grapes. So, they obviously do work.

Thank you for the suggestion and testimonial, Babette. I have been curious about those you speak of. I have some motion light and sound alarms. I found that the light doesnt work and the sound is very loud and I dare not test it at night. The deterrents you speak of have volume control; which is nice.
I am working my way up to those kinds of deterrents. Right now I am still experimenting with primitive methods. Today I ordered a bunch of 1-inch jingle bells. I plan on stringing them up and seeing if the sounds will scare off the critters.

@@neverenoughdirt Don't know if that's gonna open up right or not. I got it From Temu It does have a flashing light When activated and it has a high-pitched Sound. I can barely hear it, but apparently the animals can. It is motion activated. And it has worked for me really well. Now you're probably gonna have the raccoons playing with your bills. They don't scare anything. And I have a very large motion detector light. And it just helps them wander around the yard. These are inexpensive enough. That you can pick up several and space them around the garden.

P.s. I am excited that the sapote tree has finally set fruit. Maybe, maybe, I'll get to taste it, lol.

@@mr.seanster d'oh! that stinks! do you remember what month that was? the reason i ask is because i dont know when the fruit is supposed to be growing. i hope it is normal for it to set fruit in the fall and grow through winter. otherwise, i may be seeing the fruit drop off when it gets cold.

@neverenoughdirt I think mine disappeared like 2 months ago. Buy I think they grew for maybe a year long. They are really slow growth. And fruits got to a pretty decent size.

any updates on your citrus? i have a lot of boukhobza oranges and sumo mandarins this year

Oh, nice! Those are tasty varieties. My citrus are hit or miss. The trees with fruit are loaded and the others are fruitless or not very loaded. The ones in the containers are not as productive this year. This includes my boukhobza (which is still in a container.) Looks like it'll be citrus season again in a month.
