  • A short 'spot-light' video as this young orchid seems to have done very well for me.

I love the sound of rain on your roof. It's so relaxing. I am sure I could sit for hours and look at your lovely blooms and listen to the rain!!

I like it too but it frightens one of my cats - he 'does a runner' when heavy rain starts.

Wow! I hope the one I’ve just purchased gives me something close to your amount of blooms when it spikes! U.K. purchase, and has a few growths. It’s putting out some new roost and I’m going to mount it! Thanks Roger 👍😊

Shame those weren't out when for the show, that would have got a first, no doubt about it. Beautiful... and one day, I will have one but I need my greenhouse first...glass roof required....come on hubby, get on with it 😂

They do need good light. I've got this one sorted but still not managed to get my large Rhycolaelia glauca to bloom despite getting the best light I can give it. A real sulker that one!

It's not so much the rain as that makes everything outside grow - it's just the dull weather and low light level that comes with it.

Pretty lil' thing. Thanks for showing, helps me to deal with my acute lack of Cattleyas and/or space :D

Can you describe it? Astrid said hers smells like Hot Dogs to her (which is better than wet dogs, I guess?).

It is a champion among the cattleya alliance. Happy fragrance.

These do well mounted as long as watering can be done most days and the temps are good with reasonable humidity.

I have a question. Bc it rains so much in U.K., did u ever test the rain water? Is it suitable for orchids? Thanks

The rain water is good but the roofs around here are filthy so I wouldn't want to collect rain from them and then store it and use it for my orchids.

Excellent video. Thank you. I have a huge one (gift) inside the house near Chicago! No blooms ;(. What is the fragrance like? So envious ;)

They need bright light to bloom. I'm no good at describing fragrance - 'heavenly' is about as good as I can do.

Hi Roger, can you please advise me on when's the best time to repot my brassavola nodosa? She's a new purchase from a little over a month ago, and I thought I'd do it after all her blooms fall but today I discovered she's pushing out a new growth and a new root tip while still in bloom. Is this natural? She's my first ever Cattleya-alliance type orchid, and I am a little unsure, especially after hearing all the horror stories of people repotting Cattleya-types and their roots just dying off. Any other repotting tips would be very much appreciated :)

New growths and roots can start growing on nodosas almost any time. If it doesn't 'need' repotting because the media is bad, then I find they take off better if their new roots about 1 inch long - the time of year is less important. Some say never repot when in bloom - I do it often and have never lost blooms as a consequence. As these orchids need a complete wet/dry cycle, the mix needs to be airy (not compacted). They do well in shallow clay pots with large bark and once established, grow quite fast and take over the hole pot.
