The only similar late finisher I know of is Winx, but even she has not been quite as far back as Calidoscopio was (albeit over a shorter distance). Phenomenal finishing burst, even more so in the last 100 metres or so. As for age, I saw Great Sensation win his third Wellington Cup (2 miles) in January 1963 at the age of 10. In the case of Calidoscopio, it was unusual for an entire to be racing at such an age; Great Sensation was a gelding. (Incidentally, the delayed to 2018 Welsh Grand National was dominated by two 13 year-old geldings, the winner ridden by a 16 year-old jockey!)

Why can't we have more races run at the traditional "cup race" distances? You will hear the old and tired "mere plodder" label attached to them. Folks yopu also get horses like this old veteran! Our TB breed would be much better off if races existed for the horses who can run forever! That goes for both racing and breeding!

Still, the distances and weights of National Hunt jump races are so much greater, yet this year (Jan. 2018) the nearly 3 and 3/4 mile Welsh Grand National had the oldest horses in the race (13 years) come first and second, the winner Raz de Maree carrying 150 lbs. (68 kg). These horses race for many years, despite the very dangerous nature of steeplechases in particular.
