  • In 1938, a living, prehistoric relic was discovered. A trawler docked in East London, South Africa with the usual catch of shark, ray, and ratfish but found something unusual. A huge purple fish that seemed to have limb-like appendages instead of fins. The discovery of the coelacanth caused a sensation in the scientific world because it is the only living member of a very old group of fish, the Actinistians. A sole survivor of a line of fish believed to be extinct.

      Yeah I thought it was really funny how the one part she's like looking through the pile of fish and then they do the camera like it's in the pile of fish and she reaches in and grabs it and then in the very next scene they're talking about how the fish was over 5 ft long and like 140 lb or something and I just laughed because the very seen before she's grabbing it with one hand

      I got a better point. The under water comms check is a farce they clearly have mouth pieces that would not facilitate talking. I had this on for my nephew who is 9 to entertain him while I did some cleaning and he was the one to point it out. Lol

    • @christinamae
      @christinamae Рік тому +4

      @@thevillageblacksmith8550 its probably to make it more entertaining rather than silence. An overlay of what they were most likely signaling to each other. I know the one guy is using a rebreather which is more than I can afford. Also this is very dangerous diving at these depths and only have a few minutes to spend down there. They likely are unable to dive again until the following day. Nitrogen builds up in your system even inside your bones and is slow to get rid of without extended decompression times. Again, this can literally kill you

    Professor JLB Smith didn’t know it lived close to home! The coelacanth is an extraordinary fish, a living example of a Lazarus taxon. They do occur in nature and our presumption about supposedly extinct species is upended by our ignorance about them. To see it alive takes one’s breath away, considering that 90% of the life on earth that’s ever lived is extinct. Our coelacanth is a born, true survivor.

    Nice voiceover work for the dive scenes. There's no way they're talking through those masks and if they were, they'd sound hilarious since they're probably using a helium gas mixture for deep dives. Guess the producer didn't like the radio silence 🤷

    Beautifully made, but the cinematic reconstruction is in my opinion for this discovery, taking away from the brilliant fact that this is an amazing find!
    it is presented the wrong way I think. Too much cinematic grandeurs when a nice matter of fact video with actual interviews with the people involved without the unnecessary acting and a more natural presentation of things would’ve been nicer.
    I just wanted facts, not a movie about them finding this specimen. It was tough watching this one.

      Yeah, I dont believe that you caught a deep sea reclusive fish that is so difficult to detect they made a whole documentary about how they thought it was long-extinct due to the highly improbable chance of ever seeing one? Even for experts, it's extremely elusive and yet you aim to convince us that you have a well full of them shits just chillin behind some church in BFE?
      Bitch, please.
      Save that horseshit for someone who is wealthy in gullibility and naivety cuz that's too rich for my blood and I ain't buying it..
      Stool bory, cro. But nice try and I encourage you to keep working on it because with tenacity, practice and dedication it's possible to perfect anything.. Except convincing me to accept your horseshit for fact, of course. So, _almost_ anything.
