I never really liked kids either growing up and I never wanted to have children, but then I met my husband and that changed. I have three children, however I still don't care for other people's children except my cousins kids, they're adorable.
I've been told time and time again that my husband and I are selfish for not wanting kids. That's exactly what it is. I value my free time and having kids takes literally all of your time and I don't want that. That being said I have 10 nieces/nephews between my 3 siblings, and no matter how I feel about having kids of my own I will always treat those children like the most special humans in the world because they mean the world to me. I would give my life for any one of them.
I never understand the “you are selfish for not having kids” argument. Being irresponsible by having kids you don’t want and don’t want to take care of trumps “selfish” anyway. And yes it is selfish.....but being selfish is okay sometimes. At the end of the day you gotta do what’s best for you.
In a way, having children is selfish because parents devote their life to *their* children and dont have time to help anyone else. Helping people who are not your family is the definition of self-less. People without kids have the chance to be there for more people, and so, are a greater help to the world. Those burdened to care for only a small number of kids their entire life cant become a self-less humanitarian like you. Tell that to those uptight mothers... oops, those saggy mothers
