Necromunda releases things pretty consistently without invalidating most previous materials (so far). I think that paired with its status as a game that people kept playing after it wasn’t officially supported probably helps it keep people willing to buy the next thing. It does me. I did look at my shelf of books one day and realize that if they did actually make a new edition I’m so far into this as is that I would probably just play what I have. Fingers crossed they stick to that ethos. I was wicked surprised that the giant new rule book was an update not a new edition.
Lol, we also got a new edition of Warhammer Fantasy this year as well with the release of Old World in January 2024. New editions for the new edition god!
Middle Earth SBG hasn't gotten a new edition in 6 years. All the stuff that came out recently was just model refreshes, including the new Osgiliath starter. One of the reasons why I love the game is its rules stability. GW has never done a massive rewrite, just adjustments to things like army construction and points. This new edition sounds like a bit of streamlining and product line cleanup.
Dabble in lots of card games but the little bit of Underworlds I have is for a mix of AoS and as a boardgame. Think you are right that that is the area it will do best. Other than card aesthetics, cautiously excited to see where this goes.
I am gonna plug Battletech here again. I like that I can just play classic battletech without edition changes and the main rules just keep going for decades. Also... "Past the point where nobody is watching."... Nope still here.
The UW shift feels really weird. I thought they were onto something w Nemesis making it more accessible, but this feels more like an attempt to onramp people to larger games....except not using any core mechanics from any other games. Use our weird dice! If they had a better plan how to move people from uw to warcry to spearhead, that would be a feat.
They've tied the biggest value boxes to new edition launches, and holiday battle forces. People will obviously want to make the most with their purchasing choices, so boxes like that are an easy choice. Can't keep selling new edition boxes without new editions to push them. Especially if new editions launch in the summer, compared to battle forces over winter.
Underworlds problem is they drop it all at once and then they pumped out random cards etc under the radar then things dropped to oop. I lost track of what was available
I have said it before, I will say it again. Warhammer Underworlds is a wonderful game. The Starter is not worth $100. The perfect prices are $60 for the Starter. $25-30 for Expansion Forces. Set those and the product will be sold out for months as everyone gets in.
My FLGS is able to hold a quarterly underworlds event that is attended by a handful of people. I think moving away from the card building to prebuilt only will help. Make it closer to an AoS Boardgame.
Just roll the new editions into the chapter approved/general's handbooks and have a new giant FOMO box four times a year. Stop numbering the editions and it's just a constant subscription service of continually rolling-forward 40k rules and codexes. Let's see what's new in 40k Summer 2025 Edition!
I like the changes I’ve seen in Underworlds, mostly. I don’t like every card from before being invalidated but I get why they did it. We’ll see if it revitalizes it or not. Honestly I’m pretty content to play old underworlds as a casual board game but I’ll probably give this launch box a try to see how I like it. I’m not tossing the old stuff though. This is all predicated on the notion they follow through with their promise to give us legends material for every preexisting warband so my old ones can be played alongside the new edition
I think Underworlds could have stayed dead and that would be totally fine in the grand scheme of things. I read all the articles released thus far and allthough I am convinced that some of the changes are good and interesting, but it does not warrant all the cards being made invalid, the rivals format disappearing etc... (they basically made the rivals format the only format, so why not just keep the Rivals format and continue) It is a very good move to keep the old Warbands valid. I am sure they did it so that you basically have to buy the new starterbox to get the decks and such. That in combination with the lack of artwork on the cards (for me that is important) I will stay with the old version for now, until all the new cards are scanned and downloadable for at home printing. I am not hating on GW its a business move and they probably "needed" to do it to justify bringing it back, but I don't believe I will follow them. :)
@@lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905 well I can at least in theory understand that since people are invested in their games and don't want them to end, but often times it can be a good thing. Forcefully making new editions of something just to "revitalize" the game is not what should be aspired either. Even though i am in the hobby long enough to not play into that sort of stuff too much, I too get a bad feeling when "dead games" are officially "burried". I guess there is no right answer that would satisfy the business side of things and the consumer at the same time. ^^
This is a weird one for me. I am excited about the Infinity N5, because Corvus Belli is generally only refining the game. If you know how to play N3, learning to play N4 takes about 5 minutes and from what we have seen about N5 it will be the same. Which is good. The rules are pretty much perfect. As for Middleearth. I. DO. NOT. WANT. GW. TO. TOUCH. IT. Same goes for Necromunda and Mordheim... just leave it alone please.
Any new edition is welcome as long as it allows for the rules system to become easier and cheaper to get into; core rules should be free along with all faction rules at this point. The potential profit loss from appearing greedy does more damage to people considering the game than GW thinks. Age of Sigmar is 100% playable for free with the Spearhead game mode. Same thing with K-Team's new edition. No offense to your guys' business, but 40k is a freaking rough sell when it comes to gameplay and rules accessibility. Unlike Spearhead or nu-KT, where you can say "free", "in the app", and "modern rules system" like 20 times in the sales conversation, 40k comes off like a game designed by a someone with poor social skills to appeal exclusively to 40 - 50 year olds. 40K's rules system feels super bad if you grew up with any amount of modern strategy videogames; like paying a premium to play crappier Chess with a MTG deck's worth of quickplay spells to just have memorized or visible set up the space at all times. I say this a lot, but to someone who had only played X-Wing TMG (1st and 2nd), 40K's actual rules feel like the joke rules for a game that characters in a sitcom would be playing. The actual, real rules of 40k feel like something that Stan Smith, Bob Belcher, Hank Hill, etc. would learn for laughs, but that's how the actual game works. Legitimately feels like a crazy pills situation to go from AOS spearhead to trying to teach 40k. Every new edition should ask "how can we better sell this game to 15 - 30 year olds?" The company has only made more money the further that they continue to push against old expectations. AOS is technically a success after all these years; easily outselling fantasy before The End Times. Hivestorm basically sold out; hopefully they listen to the customers telling them that they are willing to spend money when they know what the units that they are buying do. Battletomes in AOS is them snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Fair analysis, but 40k continues to sell like a beast regardless of accessibility. It's the game most people want when they come in. We will see if that changes!
Even though GW is the largest mini manufacturer I feel lately like they have spread their butter over too much game bread with all these variant games that don't seem to be supported enough beyond the launch box to foster a community. GW makes new editions feel like a money grab despite the need for it most times. Do you feel they should downsize their roster of titles to better support the survivors or continue half assing it? In today's economy how many people want to dump a ton of money only to get an unsupported game in a year?
I don't think anything needs dropped, we just need longer edition cycles. GW just likes doing new editions constantly because it means $$$ forcing everyone to keep buying new books and cards and shit all the time. I'd argue new editions are only "necessary" for the big games like 40k because they intentionally write them that way. They don't put much effort into refining or perfecting the current edition because they're practically already working on the next one halfway through, because it's mandated.
Love me a LOTR quote. The smaller games are part of a larger domination based strategy. They are necessarily for GW to catch people falling out of the bigger games and keep customer in brand. The logic being as long as you are buying anything GW you could always slip back into one of their larger more pricey games. I've seen it happen time and time again.
And I thought the Necromunda hobby was building shelves for your books ..... I do think there is potential for a continuous short cycle having a negative impact for some, as a short cycle can make the product seem disposable Personally now if I am not ready to play a gw edition on release, its a dead edition as I won't get enough games in to justify a late buy in
Yes and no If you only paly 1 system you can probably keep up, but the more branch out the more fatigue you will feel over time and you start to look for more slow paced games in regards to release cylce (historical,...).
Not really. I don’t know many people who are interested in more than one or two GW properties. And honestly, for the two mass battle games those people usually stick to only one faction, maybe a second. Alternatively, they play only one mass battle system but go in deep with loads of armies.
Joke's on you guys. I fast forward to the 20 minute mark and only watch from there.
theres always a hack
One of my kids said you guys looked like steven segal and chuck norris. lol. :)
well now we've made.. also kudos to your kids knowing who those people are
You just glare at your models and they paint themselves.

Some of those Middle Earth models were sculpted by a former Warmachine sculptor... Several members of that team ended up in GW now
Lol, we also got a new edition of Warhammer Fantasy this year as well with the release of Old World in January 2024.
New editions for the new edition god!
Damn you are right!
Thats a strange sounding apology for your crimes against Underworlds...
😂
🤣
When I got my 20 minute shout out I had to phone my mom and tell her the guys on the TV were talking about me 🤩
Big news to share with the family for sure ❤️

22 minute man. Bolt Action from Warlord Games has just released a new edition as well. Is there much interest in a WW2 squad based game in your area?
there are pockets here and there but not like it used to be
Blood Bowl might also be slated for an update. 2016 and 2020 Nov/Dec was when they did then last time.
I have said it before, I will say it again.

Definately agree
2024 Year of NEw EDytins!
40k last year;
warcray next year?

So to be clear, something more akin to an Unmatched as far as a board game is what you'd envision for a solid version of Underworlds?
I like the changes I’ve seen in Underworlds, mostly. I don’t like every card from before being invalidated but I get why they did it.

I feel exactly the same way.
Warcry needs a new edition..badly
Why though?
What needs changing?
It's the second best gw pick up and play game. (Spacehulk 1#)
@@wizardmanaia4664 its been the same old overly swingy game since its launch. I want a reset! :O

It was a suprise to me as well. But we could get in a lot of trouble with some folks calling their game 'ded'...

The good news is you can always keep playing your previous edition with your mates if you don't like the new one!
How does GW handle things if you guys end up with a bunch of say underworlds stock that haven't sold and rotation comes around?
umm once I've bought it.. its up to use move it lol

Also: you JUST got us TOW crazies off your back and now you've dug a hole with the Underworld fans, smh
