Looks amazing, but even more amazing is the 20 year plan. I've had my current display 16 years (much smaller setup) and looking to replace it next year but probably to a stepping stone tank followed by a forever tank in 3-5 years. I'm really heavily thinking about closed loops to avoid wires in the tanks and your over the top setup with canopy is very clean and probably 100x easier then changing check valves every few weeks and cleaning them.
I would definitely recommend you get large bore holes for your closed loop bulkheads -- which would require extra engineering on behalf of the tank manufacturer to ensure structural integrity. I ran into cavitation & microbubble issues trying to get enough flow through the closed loop, and actually had to adjust the plumbing (follow up video in the works). You've got a great channel and a beautiful tank!
Im surprised theres no coral yet. By the looks of the coraline algae and the usage of the kessils. LPS would do great. Its gonna be a nice LPS Dominant tank! It sure would be a show stopper.
Thanks so much Mike. I'm planning a mixed reef -- will be more LPS & softies near the far end (lower flow), with more SPS near the MP60s on the wall side. Going to take some time...
The Vectras are significantly overpowered for the system -- when I turned them to full blast I got significant cavitation and microbubbles. Once everything grows in I may need to add a gyre to the far end (hoping not) or possibly add eductors to the closed loop returns to get enough flow... Thanks for the comment!
It's going to be great! Curious though, in the first 20 seconds I see some amazing "sun-like" shimmer. Was this from your kessils tuned to a white spectrum or from light coming through a window? We've been considering switching to kessils.
I love, love, love the Kessil shimmer. I was willing to put up the crazy price tag for those babies just because I love the shimmer. No natural sunlight in the system -- I think I was shooting then the lights were at about their peak white spectrum mid-day. You've got a really interesting channel -- I'm excited to check out your videos!
I measured it with the Kessils and T5's turned on, about mid-way down the water column directly below one of the Kessils. Wanted to identify max par in an area where I might have SPS colonies. Do you have an aquarium yourself?
Hi Martin. It’s marine-grade plywood painted & sealed with multiple coats. Humidity is managed through ventilation back into the fish room where I have a dehumidifier - planning to go over this in a subsequent video. Salt I manage just with meticulous wiping. Thanks for the question!
Thanks! It was my dream too, for a very long time. I spent about five years planning this system before I was ready to get it running. Long wait but worth it!
I'm loving the scape. Great space for fish to swim up top and still provide comfort for others to hide and explore among the rocks. Cant wait to see the corals grow and fill up the tank. Subscribed.
Awesome Dave, thanks so much. I personally really like more "natural" aquascapes. Lots of bridges and towers are cool but I'm going for what I see when I dive an actual reef. And eventually even the coolest NSA gets covered by corals anyway... Thanks for the sub and comment!
Thanks Marco. I agree, there's something really beautiful about the simplicity of a fish-only system, but I can't wait for corals. Do you have a saltwater tank?
The display is 96" long by 30" wide and 25" tall. The stand is 36" tall. I got them both from Planet Aquariums if you're interested... Do you have a tank yourself?
Only if you're a crazy person like me. Just wait -- I have a video coming out in the next few weeks about all the life support gear in my fish room. So much equipment! Thanks for commenting!
That turned out so freaking well! The cabinetry is to die for. I also like your low and spaced out aqua scape! One thought: it looks like you’re not using reflectors on your T5’s. If that’s the case you are losing tons of lilt that just shoots straight up and to the sides instead of going in to the tank.
You're totally right. I had planned some DIY reflectors but ultimately cut them from the design just for simplicity. The inside of the canopy is painted white so it almost acts as a huge reflector (not really, I know). I'm happy with the PAR I'm getting so I'm letting it ride for now. I could always retrofit the reflectors if I need more juice later. You've got a great channel and a beautiful tank. I loved your 10-month update. Thanks for the comment!
@@BaconCove cool! I would definitely do it when you get some larger colonies of sticks but yeah, should be fine for now. Appreciate it man, impressive if you made it through that whole thing haha
Great looking tank! Well done and congratulations. I’m particularly impressed by your methodical plan and your unwavering patience, I’m sure that it will pay dividends as you begin adding corals. I’m curious about your closed loop. Would you please explain more details regarding how you designed it and how the intakes work? Thank you and keep up the great work….
Thanks so much Sara. I think I'm going to make a video with a more detailed look at the closed loop (I've gotten a couple requests) -- I'll send you a message when I get it posted.
I love closed loop overhead thinking. Beautiful setup. Can't wait to see it progress in to nice fully grown artificial reef. What's the total water volume?
The display is 310 with another ~90 in the sump. I have some shots of that in earlier videos. This is my "dream tank" so I wanted to do it right, set it up as my "forever" system. Thanks for the comment!
Everything looks great and it’s cool to see the blue reef chromis in action. I’ve been eyeing them for a while and this is the first tank I can recall seeing them in.
I love the blue reef chromis too. I wish I'd had better luck with them -- I think I lost 4-5 before I got these two to stick around. Fairly common with chromis but still not fun...
Hi Ken, I highlighted a few of my favorite channels on my page (see the "channels" tab). I highly recommend you immerse yourself in the educational videos from BRS. A few of the other channels just have gorgeous tanks that function as inspiration for me. Happy reefing!

Wow! That's gorgeous!
Thanks Cherell -- I've been planning the system for years. Excited to watch it mature!
Interesting to see the closed loop plumbed that way. Have you tried turning them full blast to see the functionality of everything?

Awesome tank and cabinet👍question for you? Where did you measure your 250 par ? I’m just curious 🤷🏻♂️

@@BaconCove yes I have a 150 gallon
Where's Bob!? Need a weekly feature.
Haha, he's there -- he's one of my favorites!
Hm how do u prevent the wood getting problems with humidity and salt?

wow , it's perfect just like this without corals

What are the dimensions? That is a serious tank!
The display is 96" long by 30" wide and 25" tall. The stand is 36" tall. I got them both from Planet Aquariums if you're interested... Do you have a tank yourself?
This is really awesome setup 👍🏻. Just 🤩. Is the stand itself made out of metal tubing? Or something else?
The stand is powder coated steel from Planet Aquariums -- same manufacturer as the tank itself. Very happy with both. Thanks for the comment!
You are SUCH a clear and concise Communicator!! Is that a natural talent? Or did you have to learn it?
Very kind of you to say! I definitely don't always feel that way, so I appreciate the encouragement. Thanks for commenting!
Heck of a setup! This thing is going to be awesome!!
Thank you so much Mike. I'll be making updates as they're relevant!

Awesome setup. I can only dream of something like this
It was a dream for me for years. Literally. I started planning this system over 6 years ago, before I even lived in a house big enough to hold it!
The cabinet is really well done, great joint separation.
Thanks Dan, I'm still grateful our family friend was willing to build it for me. He's really a gifted tradesman.
How about your reef tank now. Pls update 😅😅
Update video posted! Thanks for keeping me honest!
