I did the exact thing you talked about! Took off in South Georgia on a hot day with two people on board my 1963 Cherokee 180. The power seemed slightly lethargic but I did not think much of it, it was a new to me airplane at the time. The more experienced person with me had me double check we were on both mags. Sure enough, I did not click over twice! We didn't trouble shoot the situation until we were 1500 agl. Climbed way after that!
Hello Dean, I’m a student pilot who started flying 3 weeks ago and one of the things that my flight instructor kept telling me was the 2 clicks to the left and then one to the right. I haven’t asked him why not start with the left one first and the the two clicks to the left but your video explained this small but important detail. Thanks a lot 👊🏼
Good advice, Dean, it actually happened to me a while ago, I was fliying a C172, and after performing my mag check on the rest of the pre-take off check list, it was full throttle and juste after I was airborne noticed the underpowered the airplane felt, and after a quick check noticed that the key was in the L mag, corrected it right away and the rest of the flight was without incidents.
I've done this once. I was taught and still always do check for the proper prop RPM's on takeoff (haha). One time taking off, there was a noticeable drop and quickly switched back to both. Now, I'll use this method!
Very true. Before takeoff, go to the run up area off the taxiway. Check the mags,, oil oil pressure, all good?. If not tell AtC we have a mechanical problem request back to hanger. .ATC more than willing help you out.
It depends on which aircraft you're flying. On the Cessna C152 a drop of 125 rpm is permissible on each magneto and a differential drop of 50 between the right and left magneto. However it is best to go back to the poh of your specific aircraft to know what is acceptable

Thanks for sharing your story! I'm glad it worked out.

Nice tip! Thank you very much!
what is the maximum allowable rpm drop during magneto check?

very good
I get the basic concept but I was wondering is there a specific amount of RPM drop that we are looking for?
Yes, you are looking for a drop at about -100.
@@kadenabbott6546 thank you so much! You answered right before my next flight session.
Nope. Left then right

how stupid... just click all the way to the rightmost position
done.
All the way to right on most switches is the starter…..ZAP!
