Might need to look into the lyrics a bit deeper.
You misunderstand this passage. However if we are going to use it as you are trying to us it, stop asking people to pray for you, stop asking for group prayers and for prayers for your loved ones. For asking them to pray for you you are asking for more than one mediator between you and God.
There is only one name under heaven given among men by which men must be saved.

First off, this isn’t an anti-Catholic song, it’s an anti abuse within the Catholic Church song. That could be coming from a personal place from the artists, maybe a family or friend suffered abuse within the church. As Catholics we need to acknowledge our faults as a church and offer support to any victims of abuse be it within our church or not, engaging in arguments about it on UA-cam isn’t very charitable.
Secondly, for the Protestants talking about abuse within the Catholic Church. Don’t forget that it happens just as often within Protestantism as it does in Catholicism. I grew up baptist and the church I went to shunned people for having tattoos, support an abusive father in court causing the mother and children to lose everything, and one of the deacons installed cameras in the men’s bathroom and was caught with multiple terabytes of child pornography. It’s just that Protestants aren’t unified and if someone within Protestantism commits an abuse it’s normally the individual that’s blamed. Whereas with Catholics being unified and a massive worldwide church, if someone within Catholicism commits an abuse the church is blamed. Police your own before pointing the finger.
Lastly for the Protestants, if you want to start an argument about Catholic theology on UA-cam, actually learn what Catholics believe before spouting off something pastor Jim Bob told you. Maybe read the catechism and the church fathers or even read the history of your own denominations. Catholics don’t believe in salvation through works and they don’t worship Mary or Idols. Catholics follow Christs teachings and believe that our salvation is by grace through faith.
Well said. It’s not explicitly anti-Catholic but it is explicitly speaking against the loving embrace of the Mother of God.
So as much as I have frustrations with the Catholic Church, (leading me to be an atheist many years, I was a catholic for 6 years and raised in the Catholic Church so I can argue on behalf of Protestants) but I agree with you here @ben. This isn’t an anti catholic song. This is an anti abuse in the Christian church as a whole. This is a stain across the body of Christ as a whole
There's statistically more abuse in the protestant denominations than in catholic church. I did not like the way they used the Mother of Christ to spread the message. This is my own opinion.

You should re read the lyrics as you have missed the point of the song.
This is not vilifying Mary, it’s highlighting that people who abuse use her prayer as a way of making their victims feel guilt for the actions of the abuser.

That's how I feel as I read the lyrics. Even if the message is from the POV of an abused person, it is actually in the Scriptures that the first part of the prayer is found, so it seems like an unnecessary way of using those sacred, scriptural words.

It sounds silly, but I adore when featured vocals are placed in more than just the bridge/post-second chorus 😂really makes it feel more integrated into the song and here's a great example of how it blends beautifully. Wow. Very good song with a great point/message. I can't help but think there could have been a need for more discernment in the lyrics or presentation, considering how polarizing this will come across to many Catholics.
Granted, this is just my two cents in hopes that this doesn't turn into a fight between genuine believers in Christ alone.
An argument could be made that this is a highly loving message that could have been more nuanced and gracefully seasoned.

Thank you, when writing this I knew how polarising this would be. Having be born and raised a Irish Roman Catholic I can only write from a perspective of a lived experience. That being involved in the catholic church, seeing how people in positions of power can manipulate scripture to support their abuse and gaslight their victims.

As a catholic myself I understand perfectly the case of abuse of power, false teachers or demons inside the Catholic Church or any Christian church. they should be exposed and judged with justice and punishment. My problem is why attack our blessed mother the Virgin Mary? Why not just attack those who abuse power and are demons disguised as priests or preachers? There isn’t abuse of power only in the Catholic Church but on all Protestant denominations too.
Unfortunately these demons give a bad image to Christ church and us as Christians and followers of Christ.

I’m confused by all the comments thinking COAT is promoting Catholicism when they’re clearly rejecting it. Maybe they just got triggered by the song’s title.

@@PaddyW106 As a Catholic myself, I was hoping this song would be more positive toward the Church, but alas… I do find interesting the use of the Sorrowful Mother imagery in the artwork. Certainly her heart is also grieved by the harm caused by those who claim to be acting in her Son’s Name.

Having had family members grow up being taught by nuns, the prayer was used to push the abusive actions of “a small number of individuals” on to those who received the abuse. To make them feel guilty for the actions of others.

It is, and it's a necessary message. The problem is more having to do that these words are straight from Scriptures, when Luke has the Archangel Gabriel say to Mary "Hail Mary, full of grace ("o favored one")," so it's not just about the prayer itself, but Scriptures. Sounds like it could have been written in a more balanced, nuanced way.

As a Catholic, this song still slaps. I understand the view point, but disagree. There is power in praying for intercession with saints and Mary.
This song dishonors Mary and the Catholic Church and our Lord… but the lord knows our hearts… that being said this song slaps Mary… so yeah… not good to say the least.

One mediator between God and man… that old chestnut… Every Christian knows and believes this to be true. So men/women that have physically died yet are alive in heaven can still pray correct? Though somehow if you ask them to pray for you (as they are not dead and are perfected through Christ in heaven) to the one mediator between God and men they then become the one mediator between God and men?? I certainly hope you do not allow your friends and family to pray for you if that is your belief.

@@blazzer73553as a reformed believer in Christ I’ve done a deep dive into every denomination to find a place for my family and I. Every Roman Catholic and every Orthodox Christian knows that you cannot pray TO Mary or any of the saints. Christ is the God of the Living, the saints are alive in heaven. The Theotokos, Blessed Mother, is venerated and spoken to as you speak to anyone one else in the church and they ask her to pray for them, the same way you would ask the person sitting in the pew next to you to pray for you. When we Protestants say “they pray/worship Mary” it falls on deaf ears and makes us sound stupid to them, these are our brothers and sisters in Christ whom chose to keep Christian tradition rather than turn to our Sola Scriptura, even though they also believe the only law is scripture, they have other traditions like we have our own traditions. I mean, why don’t we attack Mormons or Jehovahs Witnesses or Seventh Day Adventists or Christian Scientists the way we attack Roman Catholics or Orthodox Christians???
The lyrics are not speaking in support of praying to Mary, hence the clause “I reject your embrace.” The vocalist says at the end of the song (after saying “pray for us sinners” in the Catholic prayer he says) “now I pray for your sinners” (referring to Mary), thus saying that people who pray to Mary are sinners.

There is no theological bias in the writing of the song, WE as Christian's should stand together against abuse within our sacred walls. I happen to be born and raised Irish Roman Catholic and the song is about a families lived experience of abuse by the hands of evil people, not an attack on the Catholic Church.
These lyrics are about abuse in the name of God and the pain of the people abused. This can plainly apply to an evangelical pastor as much as a catholic priest. We protestants should look at the planck in our own eyes first before pointing roman catholic's specks!

Conflicted about this one. The sex abuse scandal in the Church was very serious and painful for so many. I can understand and validate writing about that pain. However, I really disagree with using Mary, the chosen mother of Jesus, as a means to take that pain out on. It's understandable to take frustration out on the Church, but this take ain't it.

Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, many see Mary as an idol that is worshipped. We must reject all idols. I don't think anyone is being malicious towards Mary or saying she is to blame for the corruption within the church. Hi guys, I enjoy the musicality of the song but am conflicted with the intention of the lyrics.
I recognize and respect the personal struggle and pain expressed and am truly sorry that you dealt with this and will be praying for you!
As a catechized Catholic I am struggling on the intent. Since the church does not profess that praying to Mary is a saving grace, as that can only come from Jesus. I recognize this would need to be a theological discussion which doesn’t belong in a comment section, but I fear that this will empower people to further misunderstand the Catholic Churches teaching of salvation and our relationship with Mary and other saints. The lyrics seem to imply that the church professes that salvation can come through Mary (which is heretical and not Catholic doctrine).
Again I appreciate the song, I do recognize there are abuses of power in every church (Catholics and Protestants alike) and I welcome the challenging dialogue songs like this bring, I just want to be respectful to Catholic doctrine too and not empower others by false teachings. As a born and raised Irish Roman Catholic, went to school, college and university that were all Catholic this is absolutely not an anti catholic song.
Nuns and monks taught my family in Ireland and the manipulated them through the use of the prayer, gaslighting them into believing they were at fault for the abuse they were receiving. The prayer was used as a tool for manipulation, the disillusionment felt when praying for salvation, when the abuse continued is where the lyrics came from.
Evil people manipulating the words of God.

Hey mate, as the writer of the song I can tell you there is no theological bias here. I'm a born and bred Catholic, went to catholic school, college and university, and my family is till very much involved with the church.
This song is a story of how I and my family grew up in the catholic church and the monks and nuns would physically, emotionally and SA abuse the children. They would then gaslight the kids into believe they were at fault and sinful thus making them pray on the rosary to Mary for salvation. Only for the abuse to continue. Its a deeply personal story. It's a story told from a personal perspective of a truth at the time. There is general abuse across all denominations, ours just happened to be in a Catholic one.

I think I get the message, but to be honest, the lyrics are either blasphemous or borderline so, even if from the POV of one abused by the so-called clergy or "men of God." "There's no salvation your prayer provides". The Rosary helps many people and it entirely Biblical and is all about Jesus. So I don't quite think you understand. That said there is abuse and scandal in all churches to make it seem about only Catholics is disengenious and you should seriously consider removing this.

I would suggest in the future being a bit more careful of how lyrics may come across, not just with the faith traditions of others, but of the Scriptures themselves. The prayer and reverence to Mary as "blessed" is straight from Luke, which is what alarmed me when I read the lyrics:
"Hail [Mary], full of grace ['favored one']! The Lord is with you.” (Luke 1:28) "For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed. For the Mighty One has done great things for me" (Luke 1:49-48) "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me?" (Luke 1:42-43)
If she is 'blessed' and 'the mother of our Lord' (Luke 1:42-43), why would we reject her embrace, especially when it wasn't her who committed the abuse? That's how it comes across, unfortunately.
