Could be a nice bonsai someday. I have a hazel you may have seen. It will be getting a structural pruning as soon as the leaves drop. I hate its trunk, but it was a found tree, so it dictates its lower parts. You could shorten it now, but I see you want to air layer, so that’s the plan.
I'm still on the fence about air layering this. The friend who gave me this one said they can be slow to air layer, and he has some smaller ones I could take for making a forest . I'll be watching your structural pruning to pick up some pointers 🙂
Squirrels are the daytime marauders. How about putting them in the garage if you have. They will be cold and no marauders to mess with them. I put my white oak acorns in the garage to see if this will get them the cold stratification that they need to grow. Just a thought.
Tom do you put them up off the floor, or not? My garage is divided in half by a wall, one side is heated, so it usually keeps the other side from freezing. I could bury the pot with acorns in my box turtle pen, which I fill with 2ft deep with leaves...
@@BonsaiDruid-qo9lo I have them up on the shelf. To much stuff on the floor with the snow and the 2 cars and the salt when I shovel the alley to get the cars out. Your idea could work with the turtle pen, but if the squirrels are hungry enough they will go right through the leaves for the nuts. Other half of the garage might work if it is cold in there. Pen might be good or try in both the garage and the pen and see what works. My safest bet is the shelf in the garage. Hope this helps.
Hazelnut trees. Cool!
Slow but meticulous work getting the soil into the root system. Chopstick and fingers work the best. Great repot. Nice little video.
Thanks, Tom!

This is some nice root surgery. This should give some nice root growth for spring.
I sure hope so! So many thick crossing roots I felt it was best to remove them and encourage new roots
