SBVR Train Hits Truck After it Narrowly Avoids Railfans

- On October 3rd, 2023 at 11:19am. A friend and I were following the South Branch Valley local to Petersburg. This happened just outside of Romney, WV in Vanderlip, at the Route 50 crossing. Out of nowhere we hear screeching tires and thankfully look up to take a few steps back before a pickup truck and trailer flys right by us into the signal box. Then the train makes impact and gives the truck a spin, at the same time the driver runs out of the vehicle. He got very lucky as did we and no one took trips to the hospital. The train had very minor damage, his trailer unscathed, and our car was not touched. Thankfully we parked it far back and weren’t standing any closer. A bit of time passed between each clip following the accident. Only got those little clips of the aftermath amongst focusing attention on talking with the police, train crew, and those involved.
Before anyone assumes inaccurately. This truck was passed by a challenger, who then slammed on their brakes at sight of the flashing lights, and this heavy load had no way to stop that quick. The driver was very lucky and had a very good reaction as he avoided the challenger, us, and our car. After recording I made sure he was alright and authorities were notified.
This is the original video by me and any shares should be credited to me. I apologize about the language, but in that situation, I don’t think anyone could help it. Once again, no one was hurt in this video.
We did continue following the train after this event, here is the link to that.

He will forever be known as the guy who got into an accident, then got hit by a train, and still drove his truck home.
Take a good look at that truck, it's rear quarter panel is stove in from contact with the Signal Box, they don't show the right front side of the truck either, it's not going anywhere.
@@toscatattertail9813they call these “jokes.”
@@TheBoomtown4jokes are funny, the original comment wasn't ment to be funny.
You left out the part where he gets fired the next day for wrecking his company truck by being a dumb ass.
@@carbonking53 There is further information in the description that may change your outlook.
The way you wrote the title, it implies that the train narrowly avoided the rail fans. My first thought was, how does a train “avoid” anything? Great video.
Same here 😂😂😂
Yep, maximum clickbait was achieved with the title.
@@JaxTheReaper21wouldn’t say click bait considering they were about 2ft from being killed
@@gtafan1722 It's not like the train swerved to miss them. If you get too close to a moving train, you could be in a race for this years Darwin Award.
@@JaxTheReaper21 Is it really clickbait if the video is better than the title? 🤔
"Hello, Boss? Had a tiny problem with the truck today"
More like "Hello, Boss? Had a tiny problem with the TRAIN today" 🤣
I think this is the most epic train video I've ever seen, only enhanced by the perfect play-by-play commentary! Seriously, it's amazingly lucky nobody was hurt.
Ehhh the famous bicycle guy in Japan takes the cake.

I am glad no one got hurt and the driver of the truck was able to go home and have dinner that night.
Regardless, the truck driver was not in control of gis vehicle. If the RR lights were already flashing, he certainly wasnt slowing down til the Challenger hit the brakes. Look how fast he flew past the camera guy
Yup, had plenty of time to make the crossing - until something went wrong. Always plan for something going wrong.
Truck was a 1/2 Ton Ford ... the Cable he was towing was too heavy for an Emergency Stop. I have been in this situation.. In a 3/4 ton truck I felt I had plenty of truck/brakes to haul an old 50's Cadillac. I borrowed an equipment trailer for the job and misjudged how heavy it was. Trailer was meant for Backhoes/ Small bulldozer and was 3500-5000 lbs. Cadillac was near 5000 lbs and I found out at the 1st stop sign how greatly I had err'd. I had no idea the trailer was that heavy. No one was around .. No injury, no crash but I couldn't stop the truck til it was in the middle of the intersection well past the stop sign. Had I used a generic car trailer of 1500lbs or so I would have been fine. Heavy load and quick stop caused this incident... Driver of the Ford truck was likely afraid he'd push the car in front of the train and just needed other options. Ford truck driver could have been crushed between his car and the signal/box .. Getting out of the truck that late was a bad move.
@@TenGreenRangersGreat info! I own a 2500 (3/4 ton) truck and tow a 10,000 lb. 5th wheel trailer. I fully understand what you're saying. But this guy should've known prior to the incident that he had a stopping problem. If that trailer was not equipped with trailer brakes, he should not have been on the road with that heavy load.
@@TenGreenRangers This, I think the load was way too heavy for that truck
@46fd04 You can't make that judgement without knowing how close the Challenger was when he slammed on his brakes, nor do you know how far from the signal this whole incident started. Stop playing amateur detective.
I would speculate that even if the Challenger was passing the truck and slammed on brakes when he saw the flashing lights, the truck was already trying to beat the train. As close as he was to the crossing, if the white truck was planning to stop, he would have had enough time to stop even if cut off by the Challenger. As fast as he hit the signal box, he had no intention of stopping for that train.
It's a country road. Speed limit is probably 55.
At 0:22 you can see a white vehicle tailgating the car in front. That tailgating dumbass is our pickup driver. The crash is entirely his fault.
I noticed that he rescued his cell phone as he escaped from the truck... He was probably looking at it when he crashed, thus it was already in hand.
Quality relay case right here. Glad you were all okay! ♥
What is a relay case?
That's some slick driving there Tex.
Omg that's insane dude!! I hope you're alright after that scare! Did the driver even ask if you're ok? Or at least apologise? Good on you for keeping your composure.. and the camera rolling

@@Sir.Craze-Good tip ! Thanks. I wondered if that car stopped at the crossing at the start had a role in it all. Luck and maybe some skill by the truck driver avoided tragedy.
Read the description.
"keeping composure" while yelling holy fuck!
Me my son, wife and her parents almost got hit one time watching trains by a guy running from the cops, then the cops stopped and tried to treat us like we were the ones running from him when we had been sitting there for 4 hours watching trains. He gave us attitude and was like people still do this? I use to take my father in law to watch trains for 6 hours some days before his dementia got too bad. I still go over and watch trains on the tv with him.
I'm so glad you're alright
Train: I saw that, and you will now pay.
*hits truck
Train: That’s what you get.
Sounds like he was road raging with the Challenger, tailgating, challenger hit the brakes, truck couldn’t slow down. Notice how the Challenger didn’t stick around
Passed by a Challenger, sideswiped by a train. This day just keeps getting better.
It’s like the truck driver was texting and totally unaware of the vehicle stopped at the crossings and signal lights. He’s one lucky unemployed guy
Cameraman never dies.
If there ever was a time for that saying…. This is it.
Here in the UK we have a saying. "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes". Then again I'm pretty sure most of our level crossings as we call them, have barriers, either automatic or manned. And we dont even have big ass freight trains to worry about like the US.
Intense footage!
No matter what the Dodge car did, the truck was in WAY over his head with speed and proper control of his vehicle and load.
Truck was never going to stop in time, even if it was the only vehicle on the road.
I couldn't figure out what a rail fan was. I was thinking some sort of snow blower...
So... he's driving way too fast in the circumstances but you're saying it wasn't reckless or criminal ???..
You're an absolute genius.
Well done.
If he'd killed someone you love, you would of course be accusing him and suing him for millions, am I right ?...
to be fair, looks like truck was not paying attention, if they had been preparing to stop for the crossing, they would not have come in so fast.
the train conductor must be so annoyed
If "build back better" drove a pickup truck
Let's Go Brandon!
You guys got mad lucky. So did dude on the truck
The dunce was showing off trying to beat the train and realized "oh sh*t" I can't!!
How is it even legal for a pick-up truck to pull such a heavy load trailer? This was clearly a combination of not paying attention and driving a vehicle incapabel of making an emergency stop.
The idiot jumped out of the truck clutching his phone and looking ashamed, guarantee the moron was texting and not watching the road and thus didn't have time to see the train coming and panicked.
So glad no-one was hurt, that could have been so much worse.
I thought the word 'it' in the title referred to the train, not the truck. I had an image in my head of the train driver wrestling with the wheel! 😂😂
Paying attention is free but not paying attention is costly, as we see here.
Reading the description is free…
The Driver just invested on a whole year supply of Depends because He's going to be having that nightmare for a long time.
Great stills at the end. Stay safe
Nearly a best case scenario.
Wow! That was crazy! Glad everyone is ok...
0:33 seems like somebody merged into his lane or cut him off and he had to abruptly brake. Merged onto the offramp and slide sideways onto the railfan area.
I hope the truck driver didn't lose their job because of that challenger driver.
Guess it's fair to say that even with a train coming on rails, you STILL shouldn't stand in the middle of the road.
I think the automobile posed a much bigger threat than the train. I'm glad this didnt turn out worse. To everyone involved, I hope your day got better.
Dude, YOU’RE FIRED!!!!!!!!!!
Great video. At one time it was my job to respond to incidents like these.

Both vehicles were definitely going too fast given the situation.
Glad everyone is safe, but ho... How did that driver manage to muck up so badly??? I'd be surprised if he gets away with anything less than a reckless driving charge.
I think his Driving Licence should be revoked.
that is the shortest train I have ever seen. also, this was hilarious.
What kind of dope was that guy smoking.
That guy Shouldn't even be allowed behind a steering wheel of a vehicle.
Did you have an Aussie with you because it sure sounded like it 😁
Glad everyone is OK mate.
What the hell was that? Why was this pick up truck hauling a spool of powerline cable going that fast on a gravel road knowing that when you try to make a turn, it’s gonna push the ass end of your truck in the direction of the turn.?
Guy doesn't stop, nearly kills people, then decides to get out right when his door's going to be slammed into the box by the train. This guy's shaking hands with danger.
EDIT: I read the description. The Challenger passed on a double yellow?
This looks like negligence on the part of the railroad and company. The train is coming in blind and there was no X-ing signal until the train was at stopping distance. Need to have caution levers!
I guess we gonna leave out the part where the guy holding the phone parked next to the tracks right? Silly kids.
So in other words the truck was speeding faster to try and make it over the tracks when the Challenger decided not to and stopped in front of the truck!
He's lucky he didn't get squished when he jumped out.
Hate to say it but if he couldn't stop because of a heavy load then he shouldn't have been using that truck/trailer combination. Trailers have brakes these days that are rated for the loads the trailer can haul and trucks do as well. Moral or the story is haul loads that your equipment is designed to haul. Speed kills and so does overburdened equipment. Glad everything worked out as well as possible
Typical Challenger driver.
My brother in-law owns one and he couldn't be more obnoxious.
Just imagine had he been hauling ass down the tracks..
Wait how did the train stop on a dime like that? I know it was going slow but I would have thought it would take MUCH longer to stop.
This is why Millinials can't be journeymen. He was probably on his phone and distracted.
That was a Cascade, he should have stayed Calm.
Instead of helping the driver to get out, they stand around with their camera and cry “holy fucking hell” … America? Are you alright?
Typical industrial trailer with inoperative trailer brakes and an inexperienced, distracted young driver. Darned near fatal too!
So many questions. Why did he drive like that? Didn’t he almost hit the camera guy? Was he drunk? On his phone?
I hope the Challenger driver was cited for dangerous driving.
If he couldnt hear the horn he wasn't paying attention
Were the railfans on railroad property? Did they get trespassing tickets? Or were they within the public right-of-way?
Why would you leave your pickup near a railway line?
Driving a pickup truck and NOT payIng attention on what is in front of you ?
The kid looks like he was on his phone as he made sure that came with him.. out of a job I'm assuming.
There are three seconds between the challenger stopping at 0:29 (listen for it) and the sound of the truck's brakes squealing. You also have the truck driver on video with one hand on the wheel while he has a phone in that hand. The challenger passes the truck a whole ass way away. You catch that on camera too. It sounds like you're blaming the driver of the challenger while giving the truck driver a pass but I'm not assuming you meant to do that.
Why did they need three locos to pull such a short train?
This will definitely show up in idiots in cars.
What the fuck was he doing behind that cabinet?!?!
Fired .
I can imagine the situation.
Driving along and not watching the road.at all. With a spool of wire and trailer in a ledcor truck and not see the cars stopped at the level crossing with people standing there . And assume flashing red lights .. slam on the binders and miss the people and cars and almost jump the track but hit the controller box for the intersection.
That box is 5k to replace roughly.. and with no job its going to be hard to pay for it.
But in no way was it a vehicle malfunction because the tires locked up and abs did do it's thing. You can hear that. .. the driver and a cellphone was the issue. I'll bet money on it.
I drive all day everyday for tge most part and I will say I wouldn't do what he did. Because I pay attention to driving while driving. Because I drive heavy equipment and big trucks. .. he is young and entitled and working for ledcor a company I know well. He was working and driving. That cellphone was the issue damn near say it with absolute confidence.
Instead of imagining the situation, why not read the description. The Challenger passed the truck and then slammed on his brakes.
The evidence appears to indicate that the pickup driver was going way to fast.
But he managed not to drop his cell phone.
Do you know why the driver drove into the signal box?
Just wait for the engine repair bill,,,, Hope the company had good insurance.
The Explanation doesn't make any sense of the accident
The V8 challenger rumbled passed the truck just before this accident you cant even hear that Challenger at all heck even if it had a V6 those engine rev higher pitch you would heard these in the video
The way it sound like the truck was not paying any attention at all probably on his Phone looked up and swerved out of the way
..........What you like some fries with that?
I still don't understand what the white truck was doing
Yeah.. I'm sure he wasn't distracted on his phone at all... I mean he had it in his hands when exiting the vehicle before getting slammed by an f'ing train.
Stuff happens but I'm guessing he might be looking for a job? Does anyone say why he lost control and went off the Rd?
Lifetime driver's license and suspension! Fired this might be the only way to get people off the roads that refuse to put down their phones while driving!!! The punishment should be 10x worse than a DUI!!! Conviction! More accidents are caused by Facebook, Twitter YT than someone that had a few. Yes the challenger passed the Truck but he couldn't have been paying attention having to slam on the brakes that hard and skid that far before the box along the tracks stops him completely. The gates were coming down the horn was blaring! Both drivers need to be delt with for this! If the truck was driving defensively it would have had a better outcome. Most People today drive offensively maybe this not taught anymore to get your DL???
I live near here. This is just the sort of thing the bumpkins around here do. Instead of waiting two minutes for a train to pass, they have to be manly man men and show that train who's boss by golly.
That first opening long shot of the train against the hill is beautiful.
Going too fast to stop behind the Challenger, narrowly escapes being crushed, and gets out with his phone in his hand. I wonder why he didn't notice the flashing signal lights.
Bro he wasn't going to fast to stop behind the Challenger. The bastard in the Challenger passed the truck and then stomped the brakes at the train crossing. This was totally the Challengers fault and I hope he got cited for causing the accident.
Dream on.@@centralscrutinizer6108
@@centralscrutinizer6108 you are legally required to leave a safe following distance for exact reason.. it's not the challengers fault you smooth brained criminal
Dashed center line almost all the way to the crossing there. The Challenger had just passed and immediately hit the brakes. That reel and trailer are heavy, actually likely beyond the tongue weight rating of that F150.
What are you guys talking about? I never seen the challenger in motion. Only the truck and the train. Is there a time stamp on this challenger moving?
dude, it is absolutely insane that you got that on camera, you did a great job recording the whole incident. most people would get scared and forget about the camera, but man, im sure this video is gonna get popular. what a catch.

That makes more sense than what the description says. How was the truck going that fast. Made no sense to me.
Could be, but why bother trying to beat it? It was tiny.
@@dougaltolan3017
People are dumb and impatient
why was either vehicle going that fast approaching the train crossing? surely the signal lights had long been activated before the Challenger passed and hit its brakes; what was the pickup driver doing going that fast that close to the crossing? if the pickup driver was slowing down for the crossing, it does not appear he would have screeched his tires that much to avoid the challenger; facts aren't adding up
It was 55 mph and the pickup truck driver would have made it across if the challenger hadn't done illegal passing and slammed on its brakes. So essentially with challenger passing in no passing zone and slamming on the brakes it caused a chain of events to happen.
@@LightningTheLMS3FJinty2020 common sense would dictate that regardless of the speed limit, when the crossing lights were flashing, both vehicles should have been slowing down to stop; the pickup truck driver can't race to cross the tracks with the lights on and then complain that a vehicle slammed its brakes on in front of him, passing or not; crossing lights on means STOP, not race to get across; it's just not common sense, it's the law in WV--17C-12-1
@@WebsterHighlanders i see your point.
Somebody's insurance company isn't going to be happy about this one.
Interesting, so a Dodge passed the truck just before a no-passing zone. Then slammed on its brakes when they saw the crossing signals which sent the overburdened truck to take evasive action?
Well, he is lucky that no one died or that would have been more than just a couple of tickets!
at 0:21 you can see that the charger was already ahead of the truck at that point... Might not be exactly as described...
Actually, there is a passing zone that ends about 600ft. before the crossing.
So both drivers need tickets. The charger for speeding and illegal passing. The truck was driving too fast for conditions. Even if heavy he needs to compensate for that.
@@albertvitale1293 How do you know that the Charger was speeding? You can't get a ticket for speeding without an actual number from photo radar or another type of speed measuring device by the cops.
