    1995-1999 Taiwan made Pacificas like the one you have (Pacifica 312) are probably the best guitar choice for modifying, because of the wood selection, the craftsmanship and the comfortable necks. I have 3 of those myself, all heavily modified. One of them is my main workhorse for years, playing and sounding better than my other US made guitars.

      The early 90's (500,700,900 series) were pretty good too and the 900 came with DiMarzio pickups and warmoth neck and Schaller tuners.

    Thanks for doing this comparison. I've often wondered about putting different pickups into guitars, and after listening to this I don't think I'll bother... they all sounded really good too me! Different for sure, but I'd be happy with any of them!

      Agreed. A lot of people will mod the crap out of their guitars just for the sake of modding, and that's fine, I guess.

    Cool vid. It is definitely worth it to get something good for cheap and make it into a great sounding/great playing guitar. If gear snobbery isn't an issue it can be the way to go. if money is no object then go for the already perfect instrument It's a no brainer for me personally. 👍

    For me, if you can afford a super expensive guitar then you dont have the need to modify, so you can buy a custom guitar with what you need or want. On the other side, you can experiment with a comfortable cheap or relatevely cheao guitar and all the mods you want before going for a custom with all you specifications after experiments. If you can not afford a "thousends dollars" or custom fine guitar, and your world is cheap models and brands, modifying can worth to achieve the tone, feeling and experience you want for so much less money than the expensive axes.
    I love Yamaha's, I have had some models like 102s, 312II, 311h, 112v, 120SD and a vintage SJ550HM (tele); for money reasons i had to sell the three frists and others. But the 112v was upgraded with Seymour duncan SH4 on bridge, STK1 on neck and duckbucker on middle, CTS volume pot and tusq strings guides. I love the sound brigthless and punchier, and a litlle more close to a strat than original pacifica sound. The vintage one is all stock.
    I am total amateur so i dont see my self spending thounsands of dollars on a guitar in the future, I prefer quality construction and comfort with some upgrades than logo brands on headstock (some times with very cheap components inside).
    Nice video and lovely yamaha guitar. Thanks for sharing.

      Good points Gabriel. I like the sound of that Pacifica with the JB. I had one in the 312 I have, and liked it a lot, but it just wasn't what I was looking for at the time. Might throw it back in later though.

      What's great about cheaper guitars is that you can experiment with sound without always worrying about the value of the guitar, etc. Also, they can sound as good as a much more expensive guitar when upgraded right.

    Great mod Nate!
    I inherited a Pacifica of the same vintage. I too love the feel of it. Haven’t done any mods to it. I’ve never tried to mod a guitar. Maybe I’ll try it.

    • @jimmrvos2930
      @jimmrvos2930 2 роки тому

      @@TheGuitarFam I don't play my Pacifica a lot. My focus is on learning jazz, so I mostly play my 335. But every month our group from the workshop you and Justin taught in Abbotsford works on a song. I keep some smaller gauge strings on the Pacifica, so if the song has a lot of bends, I'll use it. Also I use it if I'm working on songs with unusual tunings. For example, I've worked on Joni Mitchell's Amelia, which is in open C tuning, and just keep the Pacifica in that tuning.

    I've modified my own Pacifica 112V with a set of Irongear Vintage 6 TS single coils (neck and middle) and a Rockinger mini humbucker bridge. It's significantly better than what it used to sound like. Is it the "dream sound" at this point? Probably not fully, but it's certainly a good guitar now and can hold its own with some of my more expensive guitars.

  • @mikerauter1859

    Hey Nate! love this mod vid - please do more! Can I ask did you consider putting a Floyd in the Pacifica? Wonder if you had kept the JB - and with a Floyd it would have sounder more Van Halen when overdriven?

    • @TheGuitarFam
      @TheGuitarFam  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Mike. Thanks for the feedback. I'll do a video if I do anything else to my guitars. I didn't really consider a floyd just because this guitar already stayed in tune great and I didn't feel like fiddling around with a locking system for this particular guitar. Yeah, I think the JB and the floyd would have been more Van Halenesque.

    I modded a pacifica 112j with Dimarzio area 58 (neck) 67 (middle) and an Eric Johnson (bridge). I also installed a steel block trem (mostly decked) and put in block saddles as well as a graphite string tree. The biggest thing for me is that I rolled the fingerboard and filed some fret ends. Really happy with it and plays great! I actually like it better than fender Strats I’ve tried. There’s something about it that feels easy to play

    I modded a cheap SX thinline telecaster with DiMarzio Chopper T and Twang King. series-parallel-single switch for the Chopper. And series parallel push pull wiring for both pickups on. Not all configurations are useful, but has some interesting tones. I also sanded the back of the neck slightly. The major improvement tone-wise was the neck pick up. But the three options for the bridge humbucker are great as well.
    I liked the thornbucker and the mo' joe on the bridge position on this video, but I do prefer the original single coil on the neck position, maybe a DiMarzio stacked humbucker could do. I have a Pacifica 412, it has a DiMarzio 36th anniversary on the bridge, and stock pickups on the other positions. And I have a couple of pickups I bought for other strat type guitars(DiMarzio tonezone s, DiMarzio Area58), but the Yamaha is a much better guitar, so I think of putting those pickups in it and sell the strats (cheap copies). I do prefer it for solos because of the flatter neck radius, but for rhythmm I prefer a more traditional strat or tele, or les paul style guitar. Because of the neckshape and radius.

      How do you like that twang king?

    • @SNTOSN
      @SNTOSN 2 роки тому

      @@TheGuitarFam it is a far better pickup than the stock one. There is more clarity and definition. I can definetely use the neck pick up sound with different settings on volume and tone and it works fine.

    I ordered a pacifica 112vm just becsuse it was on sale on amazon. Like 200 usd off almost. Buut I suspect I'm gonna hate it. It sounds just high piched and "whiney" if you know what I mean? It doesn't seem the upgrade made a too much of a difference in terms of character. I guess the scale lenght and type of guitar has the biggest impact on sound I guess. Hopefully I found some usage scenario for it though.
