i loved that one moment where the FIA were. so max, you give the position back and start second. Redbull: so you want us to start SECOND behind Ocon? :) FIA: *has smol panic attack* no we mean behind Hamilton.
I think the "deal" part was fair as Max would've had to give track position or suffer stewards' decision had he not done so. It just so happened that it happened during red flag conditions so he started behind those two. Seemed pretty straightforward to me.
I thought the same too. It was basically, "Either give back the position or get a time penalty " And in the end Max ended up giving back the position thrice and also got a 10 second penalty(while Leclerc caused a very dangerous crash (perez + mazepin)) and the stewards didn't even bat an eye.
Well actually no deal was needed, with a direct red flag, the order should be the order -1 lap. In other words: the same as the 1st restart. Yes, Max would have probably benefitted because of that, but so did Lewis in Imola. (Arguably even more as his race most likely over.)
The « deal » between Mercedes, Red Bull and the FIA can be explained by thinking of what could have happened if there were no red flag : Verstappen gained an advantage by cutting the corner, but didn't had the opportunity to give the position back, because of the red flag. So, they propose them a « deal », corresponding to what should have happened if the race had continued. Because Verstappen had to be behind Hamilton, it's Ocon 1st, Hamilton 2nd and Verstappen 3rd. It's a « deal », because Red Bull can refuse, so they can during a race when they received orders to give position back (we saw moments where teams and FIA discuss before executing orders).
More like anger ride, terrible and dangerous track, unsportsmanlike behavior from both title contenders, incredibly idiotic race direction and extremely and needlessly dangerous situations created by nit calling in a SC or a third red flag when needed.

Since this is the first F1 comment section I've seen since the race that isn't just insane toxicity I think I'll use it to get my thoughts off my chest. I think it's funny that people think the red flags were to help Max or something. So they started out just trying to get Mick out of the car and get the car out of the way then they found out the barrier itself was actually damaged and if you've been watch F1 since last year you may notice every time they have to work on a barrier they have red flagged the race to do it. I don't think the track is quite as bad as people make it out to be but holy crap it's like drivers were trying to run into each other. I can see what happened with Mick being an accident but WTF was Kimi thinking when he just straight up drove into Seb? The amount of avoidable contact was insane. Then of course the big one. Now I'm just going to talk about what I think caused the crash. Max was told to give the place back but Lewis hadn't gotten the message yet. People have said "well I'd have just passed him." But knowing how penalty happy the FIA is Lewis was busy trying to figure out what the hell was going on. We're there yellows he wasn't seeing? Was there a VSC he hadn't been notified of? Was Max having some kind of problem? In pretty much all of those situations he would have gotten a penalty if he suddenly overtook Max. So Lewis slowed down and Max got pissed and tried to tap the brakes harder because he was either just pissed that Lewis wasn't going by or it could have been to convey to Lewis to go by. Either way the fact that he slowed down has been established. And finally the other stuff. I don't think the rules actually cover what constitutes letting someone back past. And I'd say that just letting them a bit by you and then flooring it to instantly overtake them probably shouldn't count. Especially since Red Bull was getting told repeatedly to let Hamilton by and just not doing it. Like I thought they were supposed to get penalized for that? So then they finally properly let him by and Max's mediums started falling off so much I don't think it would have made much difference in the first place especially if Lewis's front wing was undamaged. That's just how I see all of it. I think the race direction could have been much better and the biggest issue I saw with it was simply a lack of communication and then uncooperative teams.
I agree on most of your take, but I'm not sure if I agree on why Hamilton didn't pass Verstappen as he was slowing down. Every racing driver has it in their hearts to overtake a car that's going slower than them. Even if it were a VSC or whatever, it wouldnt be up to him to think about 'what if'. Even if it was, he could have just immediately given the place back without consequences. I reckon it was because of the DRS line, especially considering Hamilton has attempted to brake to get DRS from others in other races too(for example in Canada with Alonso), so he's aware enough to understand why Verstappen would brake there. Either way, I don't think anyone really should have been punished for it, it was just a weird and confusing situation all around. What do you make of Hamilton deliberately pushing Max off track and only getting a black and white flag for it? To me, that was the only real injustice served in the race, just because it seems the FIA aren't always consistent in their punishment.
@@AnimalzyNL given the yellow flag penalties lately, even when drivers didn’t see them, I bet ham was wondering if there was a yellow flag or SC or VSC. You just don’t see drivers stop for no apparent reason. (As far as ham knew)
@@AnimalzyNL you can’t forget there was a run off for stopped cars coming on the left and max was moving to the left a little. I think lewis was thinking he had an issue and tried to let him go into the safe area. Lewis overtake was cheeky at best. I’m fine with a warning because there was no real advantage or danger in it but would understand a 5 second penalty. Both drivers had very poor moments during the race
I think they took "F1 fans want chaos" a bit too seriously, I'll take chaos but not if it ruins the racing. Hungary was the perfect amount of chaos/good racing for me personally
It’s frustrating that 1. They could have made any track they wanted and designed that hideous track. And 2. That F1 keeps going back to Tilka… mix it up and get different designers involved to get different tracks. Smh

Negotiations were epic in this race, not just within teams but also between lewis and max. Lewis rejecting to pass a slow car speaks volumes of mind games for winning the race.
people are always gonna have problems with the FIA but I definitely think Massi has to go. A lot of the time it seems like he doesn't know what to do and just throws his response out there and refuses to be wrong.
Totally agree. The decisions don't make any sence and aren't consistent at all. It seems like the look shortly on a TV Camera (not Onboard) and just say, "Yeah it's his fault, 10 seconds penalty."
lol, i was watching the race with my buddy.. and the commentary was like everyone has been summoned to the stewards with a racing incident and a penalty. Also, for a lot of fervor for the track, its amazing to play on the F1 2021 game. The takeouts are so fun over theree
I've watched the whole race twice and the highlights 3 times and after all that i simply refuse to try and have an opinion, my brain is fried, melted, overloaded, broken 🤪
Lewis always seems to go into god mode when he has a problem with something. Bono my tyres are gone: Fastest lap x3 Bono my front wing is damaged: Fastest lap x10
That "deal" between Masi and Red Bull was very strange indeed but I think it made sense at the end. Basically Verstappen didn't have the chance to give back the position to Hamilton due to the red flag, and it would've been difficult to do just after the restart. So Red Bull had the choice to either give back the position before the restart or get a time penalty.
Thing is, there shouldn't be any negotiations at all... either penalize the driver or let him race. It's kinda Race Control want to get away with no investigations, so they give a deal in order for them not to look into the incident... wtf...
It was more about the tone and wording. Masi should have been giving a direct ultimatum "you are giving the place back on the grid or the incident will go to the stewards" What we got was a very weak "what would you like to do" The reasoning and outcome are the same, but it highlights why there is a lack of respect for Masi and the stewards this season.
@@sergio.h1985 the thing is that it wouldn’t really be fair to Verstappen though, in a normal racing situation he would’ve been given the option to give the position back. Because of this red flag Verstappen didn’t have that option so I think it’s fair Red Bull got the choice
The FIA has laid the groundwork for this race over the last few races with what they refused to penalise. What happened this weekend was unacceptable and Michael Masi seriously needs to improve or resign
@@DavidCP524 What 5 penalties are you talking about. By my reckoning, he has had 3. Should have 5... and under those circumstances, you can see the favouritism. Edit: It was unfair to ask MV to let LH pass then issue a further penalty but I think that was for taking the mickey (just plain contempt really) of the whole situation. History will let you know that for the same type of maneuvers, heavier penalties have been awarded.
Well Pirelli say that the medium tire can only go 30 laps, and Max put on his tires on lap like 19. Then Max and Hamilton went pretty much all out for 25 laps or whatever, and I imagine that destroyed Max’s tires, since the tire life estimate is based off of relatively conservative driving. I think at that point, especially with the 5 sec penalty, Red Bull just wanted to make sure Verstappen got over the line without a puncture or anything else happening.
@@Ren_1090 Completely right, as well as the fact that Max’s rear tires had two big cuts in them where Lewis hit them which compromised their tire life, and as well as the fact that Max just simply gave up after Lewis passed him and he knew he had the time penalty.
Your opinion was spot on, Lewis was just trying to avoid Max getting the slingshot near the end of the straight, so he backed out of it as well. And I think Max then slowed down more to force him to pass anyway and "caused" the accident by what was by now erratic braking. Two clever guys outsmarting themselves trying to get maximal gain / minimal loss from the ordered position swap.
My opinion on the 'Brake check' incident is that Max lifted off, looked in the mirrors to not see Lewis on either side of him, slowed down even more. When he got hit, i hink he reflexed to get away from hatever hit him. As for Lewis's POV, I think he just got confused with no info
Most logical comment on UA-cam today. Theres seems to be no reason why Lewis didnt move to one side or the other instead of directly behind, and theres no reason for max to have legitimately brake checked him after being off the gas for 10 seconds off to the right braking and downshifting.
We will be looking at this season a couple years time and realize what a blessing it was. Hamilton, Verstappen, Alonso, Vettel, Raikkonen, and even the Schumacher name returning. Fights for the title, fights across the midfield, crazy races… all that we could ask for in a championship.
Yeah apparently the deal or no deal thing is in the regulations, the honesty agreement or something, where if they admit they are wrong they can make a deal with the race director or it goes go the stewards.
Yeah for a while now the race directors at FIA championships have been getting onto the teams to give them the opportunity to give up an allegedly illegally gained place without it being investigated and seeing if the stewards find them guilty of an offence and penalising them I don't like it myself as I think it should on the teams and the drivers to work it out for themselves and then the stewards take action if needed but it's how it's been done for years including this year and it wouldn't be fair to not give the opportunity red bull was given during the red flag.
Can we have a moment of silence for lando Norris, he got hit hardest by all the decisions, he’s now behind Charles leclerc and he might even finish behind Carlos by the next race, hugely disappointing for Mclaren even though ricciardo got 10 points 😂
This season will be discussed for the rest of times, we are witnessing history! I look forward to one day tell my children about this season like my father told me about Senna/Prost! What a time to be a Formula 1 fan! Please respect each other and enjoy the sport!
Does anyone else think the timing of Max's 5 second penalty wasn't chance? I think the stewards decided to wait to see if he was going to genuinely give up the place and then come back at Lewis or if he was going to give Lewis the place just in front of the DRS line and then immediately re-pass. When he did the latter they instantly gave the 5 second penalty. Didn't there used to be a rule about not attacking back on the corner after you had given someone a place?
@@iltonnotattico6231They were both racing hard and being a bit naughty. However I felt that the stewards did everything they could do to Max penalty wise yet Lew got off scott free all weekend... As Marko said different rules for different teams.
The deal no deal during the red flag period although a but weird was perfectly legal since Michael Masi as race director has the authority to set the grid as he sees fit after a red flag period and if stewards dont agree they can intervene at any point. Basically he was trying to not have to go to the stewards when the decision could be quickly made and the outcome was very reasonable IMO. Even brundle and co were supportive of this
Yea, still very weird and a shit way to deal with things. Imagine in football the referee going "Okay guys, you either give them the ball back or im gonna have to go to VAR" ... like wtf... aren't there set rules for this? If the driver messed up, penalize him, if not him, let him race. Why get into deals?
@@sergio.h1985 Agreed with the message you conveyed but football is even worse game when it come to fair play. 50% of the foul decision in football are wrong. Whenever a guy gets near the goal they just make a foul to save the goal. Almost every defender pulls either opponents hand or shirt to tackle them. Why do people even watch that zero IQ game?
IMO it was a polite way of phrasing: The stewards will probably tell you to give the place back, would you like to do it now to avoid having to do it on track with that risk and so you can plan. or alternatively be told later to give it back when it will be way more inconvenient.
He's the authority, he's there to apply the F1 reglament and in those cases in wich there's no precedent, he must decide what will be the rule. RB: you will restart from P3 for X reason. Listening them to negociante the restart grid was like... Being on a flea market auctioning for mirrors.

In all honesty, the track is crap for racing. Absurd amount of time under safety car. What made this interesting was the drama above anything else, let’s be honest.
No mention of Lewis breaking a rule, going unnecessarily slowly before the first restart, rendering Max’s tires significantly colder than his own. No wonder Max sent that first restart
Clearly from his qualifying mishap, Max was going all or nothing this weekend. Is there no chance that he could’ve had the same mentality in the race and it is just getting a little too out of control?
@@hyperfuryxdbs6665 of course but throughout this weekend he has pushed more than he needed to. Max always says he’s just happy to be here so maybe it’s his dad applying pressure on him and being a bad influence idk
I think that it was well in the margins of grey racing rules (not dirty area yet) what HAM does too, vs Rosberg, Alonso, Vettel. Same lap that VER let HAM take the position, HAM got a warning for doing just that, running people off. Let's not pretend like Brazil was start of it, I would like to mention Silverstone, Spain, Turkey. Albon Austria and Brazil, HAM is pretty grey area racer Himself. He just talks nicer.... For perspective in my opinion dirty racers would be someone like Schumi vs Hill and Prost vs Senna. So I agree with Brazil and those kinds of moves should not be allowed, if the guy is beside you or ahead on outside, you cannot force them off. So VER got penalty for that 2nd move was deserved, and HEY well He gave back position to HAM on 3 occassion actually (lost around 10 sec for that and got punted). But it seems that HAM had a lapse of focus or tunneled vision on VER and hit VER back. After watching Marcel Fischers video it has telemetry, and Live Replay, Heli Perspective, On-board Replay over and over. For me it's actually simple, it was HAM that caused the collision. There was no sudden braking, Ham had good 8 seconds before the punt (shifte down to 4th gear on a straight) and HAM actually hit the throttle just before hitting Max. This one is on HAM and nothing convicned me otherwise and all penalties for VER were served and should been removed. If VER got penalty for that, so that for me means it should been HAM that gotten the 10 sec penalty for causing the collision and VER would been the winner. This a competition, F1, not a kid show. HAM suddenly forgeting how to overtake as a Proffessional Veteran Driver is on Himself. HAM is called VER a dirty driver in round about way, if so He is a one Himself. Just like there is a reason why Alonso and Albon called HAM that before. Dino Chiesa (ROS and HAM previous Karting Boss) said about Monaco 2014, however, was slightly different. "Lewis behaved a bit like a young, angry Italian," he surmised. "Nothing is ever his fault. He always thinks others are out to hurt him. Nothing changed it seems, HAM just have a good way with words. @@wp12mv Nope, this time it wasnt. Russell had to stop because of the spinning Perez. Mazepin had no chance to react.
I think the "deal" part was fair as Max would've had to give track position or suffer stewards' decision had he not done so. It just so happened that it happened during red flag conditions so he started behind those two. Seemed pretty straightforward to me.
Except that Masi was so far stuck up his own ass that he didn't even know Ocon was in between Max and Lewis.
I thought that way of resolving it was the fairest way and was really impressed masi did that
I thought the same too. It was basically, "Either give back the position or get a time penalty "
And in the end Max ended up giving back the position thrice and also got a 10 second penalty(while Leclerc caused a very dangerous crash (perez + mazepin)) and the stewards didn't even bat an eye.
Well actually no deal was needed, with a direct red flag, the order should be the order -1 lap. In other words: the same as the 1st restart. Yes, Max would have probably benefitted because of that, but so did Lewis in Imola. (Arguably even more as his race most likely over.)
i told my roommates to join me and finally watch an F1 race with me ... safe to sah F1 made 2 new Fans this weekend
It's a « deal », because Red Bull can refuse, so they can during a race when they received orders to give position back (we saw moments where teams and FIA discuss before executing orders).
that exactly it thank you! And if Red Bull refuse then it's up to the stewards to judge and maybe penalise
Precisely. I don't think that solution is unreasonable

That was pure madness! If I cared about who won today I might have had a heart attack!!
Thank you for the well explained comment. Feels good to see we still have some decent people out there 🙌🏻
I agree on most of your take, but I'm not sure if I agree on why Hamilton didn't pass Verstappen as he was slowing down.

It was like a District Attorney offering the Defense a plea bargain to admit guilt and the charges would be lowered or dropped altogether.
I think it was the wording that Masi used that caused the big stir
Thing is, there shouldn't be any negotiations at all... either penalize the driver or let him race. It's kinda Race Control want to get away with no investigations, so they give a deal in order for them not to look into the incident... wtf...
It was more about the tone and wording.
Masi should have been giving a direct ultimatum "you are giving the place back on the grid or the incident will go to the stewards"
What we got was a very weak "what would you like to do"
The reasoning and outcome are the same, but it highlights why there is a lack of respect for Masi and the stewards this season.
@@sergio.h1985 the thing is that it wouldn’t really be fair to Verstappen though, in a normal racing situation he would’ve been given the option to give the position back. Because of this red flag Verstappen didn’t have that option so I think it’s fair Red Bull got the choice
No one said about the battle between Sainz & Leclerc. It was awesome
The FIA has laid the groundwork for this race over the last few races with what they refused to penalise. What happened this weekend was unacceptable and Michael Masi seriously needs to improve or resign
Not even the last few races but technically over the last few seasons. The FIA is as consistent as the Honda engine from 2017 was reliable

AND I STILL DON'T F*CKING KNOW HOW LEWIS WON WITHOUT A DECENT FRONT WING ENDPLATE!!!

My favorite part of the F1 post race are these videos!

Capturing all the feels like a boss. Well done on this one WTF1 for managing this on the weirdest race I have ever seen.

Didn't there used to be a rule about not attacking back on the corner after you had given someone a place?
correct. Hamilton got a 25 second penalty in 2008 for a similar incident and it got outlawed since
It’s weird though because drivers have literally done that (reovertaking immediately) this season and it’s been deemed fine…
But here's the thing, Lewis didn't even have the place to begin with
He didn’t reovertake on the next corner, it was 2 corners down, I think

To make believe that it's everyone else, but not him.
