Seems to me Kishore stands out in this group, the rest need to be more open minded, and to understand about the world outside Europe..

It is evident through history that it is not about the people or the identity of the state or even the elites and their desires.
If Russians didn’t exist. Ethnically and culturally. Whoever lives in that region where Russia is today will react the same way. If there’s a military alliance that historically was created to fight them, and it comes closer, the threat alarms start ringing. If the UK were not an island and in what is Russian territory and had the same experience, the conclusions may be surprisingly similar.
The country started off after communism as a democracy, to oligarchy, to autocracy. The same conditions occurred with France under Napoleon. There was an oppressive monarchy, then the revolutionaries attempted to create a democracy. Soon power fell between a few key individuals. Then, on among them rose up and took the reigns. If there was economic development and a stable political culture, things would be different. None of that exists in Russia as one would prefer.
Every Russian who was born during Yeltsin will grow up in a country run by Putin. Nevertheless, they would be blamed for what Putin does even if they were just a fish in alone in a pond; they had no control. One can expect that such a person should take it upon themselves to change things. Fair enough. Lets see historically, how was anyone every able to change the political system of Russia without first a context of violence or total instability.
Would someone from America if they were dropped in Russia and grew up there, be considered treated fair if we expect them to become a Washington of Russia? Perhaps if more Americans were there, would it be the same? You’d have to replace the entire country with non-Russians. But lo and behold would they still not create a similar system due to geography, resources and history?
To assume differently and to assume Russians wont have the same human desires and disposition of Americans or any other person considered free, is to deny their humanity. One can only deny someone’s humanity if they never think they were human in the first place. This leaves room for permissiveness for things. One would have a deep sense of superiority to take that position seriously.
There’s no room for any superlative leadership or cultivation of individuals who one may consider humane when the children will always be growing up in the same conditions. A culture of feeling perpetually under siege and needing buffer states. A culture where many of their people have died from invasions from Napoleon and Hitler - recorded within their own family tree. A society with few access to a better life or ideas experiences and education to change course. Even then, when some Russians are able to access these things in other countries - they don’t come back. All that value to change a country once accessed is ironically never implemented at home since the better choice will be to stay out.
When the same conditions still exist, the same outcomes exist. Expecting that doing the same things hoping for a different result is frankly stupid.

In order to prepare for one day in future, hostile alien life form do visit our planet, or similar unconquerable global disasters do happen, generally, it's good to be always having about 15% of whole world population who are so ready to sacrifice and fight without fear, then those people with that quality probably must live in the social system like Sparta in ancient Greece while the rest of the population can continue to live easy life and pursuing to raise all sorts of freedom, humanity and individualism. If Chinese people want to take up that Sparta function, just let them do it.

Totally agree with Kishore. Russia is Europea power for as long long time. European policy and security should be inclusive of Russia for permanent peace. The current oxymoron in charge of EU is totally alieanated and excluded Russia. Do you really want your powerful neighbour remain angry all the time, keep trying to subdue it. The geographic location can't change, RUssia wil be europe neighbour. Either you form peace with it by inclusive or make it opponent forever..

What about Hitler, then. Should the word have made peace with him when he had occupied half of Europe in 1943? Given him France, Norway and Poland as a price for peace?

I don't think Russia can be compared to Western colonialism. Sweden, Poland, Germany, France and UK all invaded and attacked Russia in the past. The rest of the world did not attack West or pose threat to it but the West still attacked them.

    • @Pattern-Recognition

Totally wrong. The Byzantine Empire attacked Western Europe for decades and made it all the way to Vienna. Spain was occupied and ruled by North Africans for centuries. And Russia attacked and divided Poland 3times. It also attacked Japan in 1904/5. Russia throughout its history has been a much worse oppressor than most of Western Europe or the US. You seem to have little idea about the past.

The Russians started in Kiv then moved to Moscow. So Ukraine and Russia are really one group of ethnic people.
