The darkness aspect of the game may need a rework at some point, as I understand your point. On the topic of the index requiring you to find the ore: this game is a find and discover type of game, so unfortunately that is the point. I do like the feedback, and this game is in alpha, which is not mentioned like anywhere, but it is in alpha and will take a bit for a full release.
When you pin stuff chests they give you the ores you need highier the tier the more ores you get that you need.Go mining has the same feature like if your get common chest it gives commons ores that you need for a pin recipe.
I myself got lucky early on as well. Got Vaporgram in Go Mining (1/1.495M) a few minutes after pinning a recipe. I got Violrine before that (1/3M+), as well as a Mutated (for Rex:r players: Ionized) ore (1/1.15M) very early. Recently, I got a Mutated 1/100.9M ore. Go Mining is smoother than this though, I would definitely prefer it.

Sovereign. In go mining, it’s about 1/7M+ if I remember correctly.

It might take awhile, I still have to grind a lot for my next pickaxe. I'd hope to release it between now and next week, but it could take longer.
why is there durability
I really don't know, but it's not much of a problem. It's very cheap to repair stuff.
