heya! I heard your criticisms, and I will say that I am going to absolutely work on delivery next time around-- this video was actually recorded in October, so I didn't have the best handle on tone, but with experience and all of your help, i can absolutely nail it next time. I understand that this is a... controversial topic to say the least, so thank you so much for hearing me out
Did you try crawling for the parts where the platform was too small and you kept falling off? I think the main problem you are having is that in old games they didn't explain mechanics to you directly, because the games were shorter so they thought people would want to figure it out themselves. Like for instance, in the footage with the wing cap in the Sand level if you dip down and gain speed you can fly back up higher than if you just hold down on the stick constantly, like how the gliding works in the Arkham games. In old games we learned to move the character relative to the camera because you didn't always have control, and sometimes you need to actually adjust your movement in real time as the camera shifts, its a bit of a mind eff if you've come from modern games where the camera is often behind the character but its just how it is, I'm not sure if you are going back to it but try this if you do: In the castle, practice moving the camera around while trying to run in a straight line, so no matter what the camera is doing try to keep on that straight line. If you master this the platforming won't be a problem anymore, its similar to circle strafing in an FPS, if you've ever tried that. Hope that helps.
I find it funny that when people compare Mario 64 to modern games they get tons of hate. Yet when people make videos about how Sonic Adventure is terrible nowadays and the video gets no dislikes. 🤔
Sonic Adventure was pretty bad when it came out. I gave it a free pass at the time because it looked great on my new Dreamcast but I knew it wasn’t on par with the N64 3d platformers such as Mario64 and Banjo Kazooie when it came to how it played.
If you wanna compare it to older games, spyro and battle for bikini bottom had better controls and better movement. The game isn’t bad but it’s over priced, and too many people will tell you it’s better than modern platformers .my friend who loves early Nintendo convinced me it was worth €60 to play, but It wasn’t remastered like other older platformers and it’s far more expensive. It’s just not aged as well as others. But Nintendo just get a pass for some reason. If it was cheaper to play I wouldn’t be annoyed at all by it, but the fact it’s so highly praised and expensive to play makes me more critical.
0:50 to 0:55 I wish more people understood that. I have tried playing Mario 64 recently and I used to have little to no issue with the contrlols, but since I played pretty much every other 3d Mario game and I had not played the game in years. trying to go back to these controls is really difficult.
Same for me with other older games. When compared to modern games with more refined control schemes and all, older games can literally suck now. I take the Michael Bay style Resident Evil 6 over the old Playstation 1 RE games. Tank controls are the worst.
as the first 3d platformer game it's pretty good, but then you play better games and go back to this and you feel underwhelmed, loved to see your point of view because everyone keeps telling this game is amazing, but it WAS amazing, at the time, but now it's not great.
I agree, I mean there are many older games that hold up amazing today, the original super Mario bros is a perfect example, I had so much fun playing it, but playing 64, as someone with no nostalgic connection to it, I got literal tension headaches, it felt like homework, I hate it.
First 3D platformer was Crash Bandicoot, and they nailed the controls. Having slippery movement is not caused by limited technology, but bad game design.
Just played the Mario 64 for the first time and really appreciate this video, because these are my feelings entirely. I had to quit at 61 stars to spare the life of my Switch. The game just didn't age as well as people claim, and the controls felt like they only worked against me. And I'm used to speedrunning other platformers like Spyro! At the very least, they should have updated the camera and controls. Given an option for "classic" and "modern" like some other re-releases do. (P.S., The delivery of your video was fine, Nintendo just has some of the most weirdly toxic fandoms alive who equate any game criticism, no matter how mild, to be same thing as insulting their childhood. It's weird. Just ignore them).
Mario handles like shit, this game aged poorly but people see it through their nostalgia glasses (before someone tells I’m a hater or git gut I grow up with this game and loved the hell out of it but that doesn’t stop me from being objective)
@@arturoehr Mario doesn't handle like shit though, he handles pretty well actually. It hasn't aged THAT terribly. No people see it through being objective.
Mario 3D All Stars was trash in general and was found to be major downgrades from there originals since they were emulators and not the real games. I don't think it's a good idea to play it on the Switch.
I just hate the "sometimes I make a U turn, sometimes not" back turning. It's ridiculous how, a lot of the time, you can long jump and "trick flip" your way right to the star without feeling any threat, BUT when you have to stop to pick an item, you gotta be careful of every button press to not get the fucking U turn that makes Mario go down even from very wide platforms. In Shifting Sands land, the first red coin right behind the starting point is a great example of when the devs should have realized that it's not fun at all, just tedious. I've read on the interwebzz that they fixed the turning in some version? With just that fixed, I would consider the game a classic (still not even close to the NES Marios, but hey, few things in life are...) If the game was released today, they'd probably patch that right away due to backlash.
mario 64 fans when their 25 year old imperfect platformer is put in a negative light at least somewhat: (like to dislike ratio) But in all seriousness this game is beginner hell and can be unforgiving at times. But its got its fans including me and i actually agreed with some points you made like the water controls and some bad level design. Interesting to see someone tear it apart instead of praise it like its the messiah though, good video.
The Tall Tall Mountain "Search the lonely Mushroom" is way to unforgiving with it's Cannon controls and the fact that every game over the cannon hole closes again. Besides that the Games alright for me.
I honestly agree. People are just disliking because they can’t handle you criticizing their beloved nostalgia game. Mario 64 is flawed and I feel it’s overrated. I gave you a like
@@toxiquid Nostalgia is a powerful factor so it sucks people just automatically dislike for you having a different opinion. (I bet most of the dislikes are from people who didn’t watch) Honestly Mario 64 has some good things in it, but it’s my least favorite 3D Mario. 64 DS is way better and every 3D game since 64 is better. I don’t like how people say “It’s good for it’s time. Be easy on it” Honestly, that doesn’t need to be stated for the original Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, Zelda:Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie. Those are good games that don’t need that “it’s good for its time” bullshit
As SM64 fanboy. I do agree (atleast for Casual POV) . Some of the stages are stupid and repeative (Bowser levels, Rainbow Road, The Clock Level, Water Levels), controls suck, no replayable value and stupid camera that works rarely. Not only that, but the game is full of bugs like invisible walls and partially broken physics. However while it does have flaws. The music is amazing, the level design apart from the bad one's is amazing, the creativity in the game is fashinating, etc.
You played on the Switch, which is the worst version of the game, with a control stick that isn't accurate to how it feels to play on an original N64 controller. The Shindou version that Nintendo used is terrible to play, I absolutely hated how it played on the Switch and how they changed Mario's voice pitch, I could not stand this version either, so no wonder you have such a bad impression of the game. Mario is not slippery, he doesn't continue to slide when you stop pushing the stick forward, but the random u-turns are terrible, I'll give you that. The wall jumping complaining is just you not being used to the timing. The moment you see Mario hit the wall, push A, that's it. The wing cap is just like a plain without a motor, it makes you glide as you said. If you could just go anywhere with the wing cap, it would be boring to use and way too easy. Building up speed from diving and then rising can build fast momentum and it is extremely fun once you understand it. The random wall on Tall Tall Mountain is literally shaped into a square to make it stand out but not giving the obvious entirely away. The Bowser fights made you take advantage of the control stick, which was not common at the time, and when people came from 2D and D-Pad's, it wasn't easy the first time around to hit the bombs with Bowser and it was a good way to get people to engage with the new way to play. Galaxy also has identical Bowser fights, so I don't understand why that is such a big problem for you. The textures isn't enhanced, except for the text and HUD icons. The resolution has been raised due to the emulation and the game looks bad in high resolution, where the technical limitation of the televisions back in the 90's masked those in the original game. 3D all-stars just plays and emulates poorly. You asked for people to be civil in the comments, but you use vulgarly language to describe your issues with the game out of frustration and anger, and it makes it harder to take your critique seriously. It all just sounds like you apply modern controls and standards to a game that is 20 years older than Odyssey and you are frustrated over the game doesn't play like that more than anything. But the camera, that is true, it's bad when you need adjusting. It sucks that this was your first playthrough, because it's just a bad way to experience it.
All due respect, there are virtually no significant gameplay differences between the US and Shindou version of the game, unless you really care about BLJing that much. In fact I'd argue playing on the Switch is better in some ways because you don't have to deal with the god awful Nintendo 64 controller and its analog stick. I think his callousness in this video took away from the overall point he was making, which is that Mario 64 was amazing FOR ITS TIME. It was the first to do the things it did, and yes that's impressive, but that does not make the game above criticism, nor is it above being judged by modern standards. Even if it may have set those standards
@@tone6410 Again, I was talking about analog sensitivity, every type of emulation of Super Mario 64 has at least SOME problems with analog sensitivity, that makes Mario EXTREMELLY slippery
i agree this game is shit. it only is worshipped because of nostalgia. sunshine is vastly superior and didn’t even come out that many years later. i will still try to beat it though just to say that i did.
Thank you! This feels so validating! As someone who has played and loved every other mario game (except sunshine), I agree with everything in this video. Mario 64 even sucked in 1996. Even then, people were insisting that it was an "important," "ground-breaking" game. But it was never fun. Give Nintendo credit for the concept, but they pushed it out before it was ready. The camera + the controls = broken game.
This is one of my favorite game reviews on UA-cam. I also think SM64 is just an overhyped hot mess too. My favorite 5th gen game is Bubsy 3D, and you know how critics treated that one. Seeing people all over the internet harass me for liking it, calling it a "dumpster fire" and praising the hell out of SM64 just feels unfair to someone like me.
@@roostergamerbubsy3d Or you have "different" tastes. I honestly can't understand how or why you'd hate SM64 and love Bubsy when they both are literally the same exact game with the exact same problems, especially since the one on the Switch was an incomplete emulator and not a rerelease.
I love sunshine🥰 EXCEPT FOR THOSE HORRIBLY DESIGNED *_SPECIAL LEVELS_* THAT *REMOVES FLUDD* THE MAIN GIMMICK OF THE GAME BECAUSE MARIO CONTROLS PRETTY SLIPPERY BUT FLUDD MAKES UP FOR THAT SO WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS IF YOU PUT A MARIO WITH SLIPPERY CONTROLS IN A PRECISION PLATFORMER
Stfu. Everything in this video is trash and false. Mario 64 never sucked in 1996 or in any other year. The gameplay is still awesome and the game is amazing
I also think Mario 64 has A LOT of problems. In fact, I've played both Mario 64 and *Bubsy 3D* (Keep that in mind, Bubsy 3D), and guess what? I found Bubsy 3D to be 10000x better than Mario 64. In fact, it's my favorite game of all time. And before you ask, yes. I absolutely ADORE Bubsy 3D and yes, people have been spitting on me for that. My overall ratings for both games would be 7.5/10 for Super Mario 64 and 9/10 for Bubsy 3D.
I didn't think this video was going to get so many dislikes. To be honest Mario 64 isn't for everyone. It's not super beginner friendly and has shown its age,but when it does click it's a really fun title. Dont be upset about not liking the game. It's not for everyone.
Fanboyism is a problem when it comes to objective criticism. People get emotional and just stonewall or outright demonise anyone with a dissenting opinion. It's kind of sad.
while i dont think its bad, the game is definitely overrated as hell. Most the people that claim its the best are just stuck on their nostalgia in all honesty, and thats okay, but i'm not gonna pretend the game is a masterpiece.
That was a great vid, and 64/DS is one of my fav Mario games. Mysterious Mountainside is actually my fav star in the whole game! Didn’t have trouble finding the slide as a kid bc of the ripple effect on the mountain. It was always weird and awesome to me that a mountainside contained a portal to an isolated slide dimension.
Mario 64 fans be mad you all need to chill out I know seeing your favorite game getting bashed is Tuff but it gives you no right to be toxic as a fan of Kirby star allies I've been there ( sorry for bad spelling or errors)
As someone who loves Bubsy 3D, I absolutely agree with your sentiment of "seeing your favorite game getting bashed feels bad". But hey, at least you don't have it as bad as me with Bubsy though..
I do agree with most of what you're saying but there's definitely a lot of delivery of what you're saying that I'd say's pretty bad. For example your anger and language through the video comes off as more whining that you were bad at the game so you don't like it than a critique of the game. Especially because multiple times in the video you say you're explaining why you're mad at the game rather than why the game is bad. There are also multiple points where you compare it to modern 3d platformers, which for a 24 year old game that started the genre is pretty unrealistic expectations wise. Expecting it to have the same polish and precision of Odessy is insane. Again I agree with most of what you say. The camera and controlls of the Mario games don't really get good until Galaxy I'd say, and of the course the level design is rough and can't compare to modern platformers (which isn't to say that all of it's problems are justified by it's age. Some of the design decision are just bad as you say). The delivery and script just really work against you in this video though unfortunantely. I understand that a lot of it probably made it's way in for humor, but ultimately it just doesn't really come across that way and works to lessen the argument. Normally I wouldn't comment something like this, but I do like your videos and I just think this one has a lot of flaws that bring down it's quality as a critique video. Which I assume this is. Looking forward to the next video.
i kinda agree with the fact that this is more of a reason of why he is mad at the game instead of why it is bad But its still true that the game is hard
I agree that my delivery is off- this was actually recorded back in October believe it or not, and was supposed to be the first video of the rebrand, but I got swept up with the Crabrawler video and got approached to do the Blue Fire one, so it got pushed back haha
I also think it's important to note that even if the delivery was on point, there will *still* be people who claim that he just sucks at the game. Hell, I remember some guy on Gamefaqs saying he platinum'd Dark Souls and still didn't care for it...yet the fanboys STILL said "lol mad cuz bad git gud". It just comes with the territory of reviewing games, especially older games or those with a high difficulty level.
i'm trying out this game rn, and i don't like it either so far, seems like all the praise it gets is pure nostalgia, and the fact that the first level is your second favorite, and i think it's mediocare at best, concerns me for the later levels
This has nothing to do with fukcing reddit why don't you shut the fuck up and listen to people before becoming ignorantly deaf over a title or opinion.
Yeah the delivery is kinda harsh but I think the core criticisms are quite accurate (still respect the game though, Shows it’s age but pretty enjoyable)
if you and 14 of your close coworkers had to make a 3d platformer(with the game being the first of it's kind, added pressure) and you had a 3-year deadline, i'm pretty sure you'd make a sloppy game too.
My first 3D Mario game. 3 things killed it for me. • The terrible graphics (Nintendo basically copy and pasted this onto Switch) • Controlling Mario just doesn’t feel good to me • The absolutely abysmal camera. Tried Super Mario Sunshine and was simply blown away by how smooth and seamless everything felt.
@@nothanksthough What kinda of brain dead comment is that? 😂 I’ve played it so I get to review it. If criticism hurts you too much get off the internet
@@UA-camUser2013lol and that’s why it translates to a bad experience in 2023. May still be great for those who are used to that era of gaming but I started in the mid 2000s DS era.
I definitely agree, I love platformers, 2D & 3D but I tried Mario 64 multiple times and I just couldn’t play most of it, not because of difficulty, but because it got kinda boring redoing the same level a lot of times. The controls were also not great and I agree with your critiques of them. people have a really strong bias towards this game and I guess I can’t blame them, it was revolutionary for it’s time, but people need to listen to reason honestly. The game has aged, it’s been 20+ years people. You can love a game and understand that it’s not perfect.
pretty sure he was just saying that because lots of the kids who love this game will send death threats because they can't handle someone having an opinion
@@MoopersYT not to be an ass or anything... But if you can't handle a kid telling you to kill yourself then you really shouldn't be on the Internet... Just saying
I had the exact same issues, and at the end Iplayed the PC port of it, in which you can customize a lot of things. This game needs to be remad or something because if we exclude the actual gameplay, everything else is pretty good! The concepts, the art, the music (god, especially the music).
The music was panned in the early reviews, and players also disliked it. Remember, Tomb Raider came out at the same time. Age of Empires and Command and Conquer were also huge at the time, so this Doodle di do didn't cut it anymore. Same goes for Star Fox 64 btw.
As someone who play's the rom hack's Im already passed all these basic arguement's these no longer effect me im to good at the game now that this stuff just don't happen to me no more so I can't relate bro.
I don't get how this game gets so little criticism, to the point where I assumed it was some example of "peak game design". Eventually, about half a year ago, I gave in and played the game. And I hated it. Nearly everything in this review described exactly how I felt about the game. Unfortunately, public perception made me believe my opinion was some kind of fluke, so I replayed the game with a different controller, and ended up with the same results. I was so confused, that I replayed Rayman 2, played Spyro and Crash for the first time, and found a way to play Sonic Adventure for comparison. After I had completed the above mentioned games, and confirmed that I still loved 3d platforms, I tried Mario64 for a third, and final time. I played the 3DS homebrew port so I could use my favorite controller. I made sure I knew the controls before I even started the first level. After about half an hour of preparation, I entered bob-omb battlefield. Bob-omb Battlefield was the only level I consistently didn't have problems with, as it's level design is more open. I will say that it's extremely annoying that King Bob-omb throws you off the mountain after telling you not to throw him off, but I went with it. Next up was Whomp's fortress, and here is where the problems start to show. The areal platforms are nearly impossible to aim on. People like to say the camera in Sonic Adventure fights you. These same people praise Mario64. Next up, we have Jolly Roger Bay. The water level. Personally, the water controls are even worse than the ground controls. Afterwards, I went to the first bowser fight. The level design isn't great, but at least the camera gives you a perspective you can actually use. Actually fighting Bowser is another story on its own, as it's impossible to aim. Cool Cool mountain was actually fun, because it felt like it embraced the slippery nature of the controls. Shifting Sand Land, however, is a perfect example of the level design conflicting with the controls. The pyramid is absolute hell, and I wasn't having any fun with the game from this point forward. Lethal Lava Land is the worst level in the game. When a level is designed around attacking enemies, you expect your attacks to be responsive. Unfortunately, Mario's attacks take longer to finish than it takes for a Bully to recover. Afterwards, I went after the Invis cap and Wing cap. After about half an hour of searching, I found out how to get the Invis cap. Afterwards, I didn't want to have to go through that again, so I looked up the wing cap location. Who puts an item necessary for progression in the roof of a castle when the player has nearly full agency? Anyway, Big Boo's Haunt wasn't so bad. It's the only area where the bad controls improved the experience. Hazy maze cave was when I finally gave up. The level was the embodiment of everything I had complained about up until that point. I turned the game off. I haven't finished it yet, but honestly, I don't think it's worth it.
Ya spooked me for a second there with that heading haha- I thought it was going to be completely different than I just read, but I was delightfully surprised that it wasn’t the case And yeah, public perception is completely wack. But I’ll always be an advocate of “if you don’t like it, then don’t play it”. This goes for games you half-played as well. It was like that for me and Animal Crossing haha It’s super bold of you to say it publicly here of all places, and to that, massive kudos. Do what ya love, yo
@@monkeyt2472 he then told everyone not to be an ass, but then didn't follow that instruction himself. It's holier-than-thou and patronising. Just saying "this is just my opinion" doesn't make you immune from criticism.
I wanna leave a comment because I found this in the “people also watched” section while searching up “gaming in the Clinton years super Mario” The absolute irony is too much
This game is very overrated. While I wouldn’t say it sucks, it’s not as good as everyone makes it out to be. It’s definitely a huge step in gaming and it was ground breaking for its time, but this game isn’t completely exempt from criticism because of that. I feel like a lot of people are blinded by nostalgia with this game. Sure, it’s a good game. Great even, but just because you grew up with it doesn’t mean it’s perfect.
Doesn't stop people from putting Sonic Adventure to the standards of today's 3D Sonic games. We really should stop putting Mario on such a high altar and be able to collectively and objectively criticize it. Super Mario 64 was a pivotal point for 3D platform games, but it's not a masterpiece 25 years later.
@@YopAlonso the thing is that the N64 era was for hardcore players and from Wii onwards they focused on the casual audience too, and bringing back the game that hardcore players like and casual players dont caused all of this
Then it just doesn’t hold up, I played it for the first time after a Friend of mine (a classic Nintendo fan) said it was fantastic even by today’s standards. But it is a nightmare to control, especially on switch. If you treat it as an old game, it makes sense. But it’s not considered an old game to many. It’s treated as a gold standard game. One that cost €60 to play, and I found unplayable. compared to other older games like tye the Tasmanian tiger and spyro. Nintendo needed to improve this at least. It’s fun in places, but it’s overpriced for a mediocre experience for someone who didn’t know what to expect. (This is my third Mario game and I’m new to the switch)
All these things were found out about and mentioned in the original reviews of Super Mario 64. Those reviews came with laundry lists of suggestions for Super Mario 64 2 - which we never got. All this hype is nostalgia. Nobody was talking about Mario 64 in 1998. Mentioning that game would get you eye rolls. It was simply a valid first attempt and a product of its time. Same goes for the N64s Zeldas. Nobody cared about those anymore before the rise of UA-cam hype channels. Most of my friends never finished both games because they were so bad at guiding the player on what to do. Very obtuse design.

Personally I liked the controls, they felt fluid and natural to me! I suppose its a hit or miss thing, depending on movements individuals make. I tend to move and side-flip a lot, so mario 64 controls happened to work well with me... But I struggled massively with mario sunshine controls.
the amount of times I wanted to do a long jump and instead Mario randomly did a ground pound when he already was on the ground which lost literally all momentum made me wanna blow a gasket
This is so damn accurate, I never understood why Mario 64 DS got so much backlash for the movement controls when 64 was already bad in that department, this is the absolute best example of a fanbase being blinded by nostalgia.
64 DS is an improvement, not only does mario have a better wall jump, but the analogue camera controls more than make up for the d pad controls (which really aren't that bad when you consider that this is basically the 3d land control scheme)
One of the things about super mario 64 is that everyone says that, “It’s an incredible game because it was so revolutionary at the time” but the problem with that is if you are reviewing or talking about it as a good game hold it up to the games that come out today 1. The graphics: Yes I know that the graphics can’t be good because it’s on the N64, but if you’re holding it up to other games that have come out today like odyssey, you can’t just say, “it was incredible when it came out” but that defeats the purpose of comparing two games 2. The fucking camera 3. The movement is so stiff and slippery, so combined with the camera you can’t move or see anything 4. The water is so slow and stupid so it’s annoying to get to any place underwater 5. Imo the level design feels very boring and repetitive, and as someone who was an Xbox gamer until the switch so I didn’t have an N64 this is my first time playing this game I just don’t know where to go in some situations. There will probably be more reasons soon
i do agree with that but those are, again, reasons of why the game is difficult ratter than why is it bad also, why do you have to compare mario 64 to mario odyssey knowing that the later one came like a decade after that? That would be like comparing smash 64 to smash ultimate or kirby's dream land to star allies because of graphics, knowing that the graphics at that time arent advanced, not to mention is the first game, they would obviously evolve in all that time, thats also why remakes exists

I thought this was going to be a joke video, so I'm pleasantly surprised to hear a genuine critique of this classic. It's a solid first attempt at a 3d platformer, but it seemed odd how few people I'd heard point out flaws in a twenty-something year old game. That being said, using words like sucks and shitty so much makes you sound whiny despite having valid points.
yeah, that comes off as an issue with the tone-- i admittedly wrote this back in september, so there were a bit of toning issues that i have since ironed out. i wrote the blue fire and crabrawler videos after this one, which is ironic since this came out later haha
I can’t agree more with you! I played this game briefly as a kid and I didn’t like it-I was more of an ocarina of time kid. I bought 3d all stars for sunshine and galaxy primarily, but I decided to play Mario 64 first thinking maybe now that I’m an adult I can appreciate Mario 64 more. Nope... Mario is slippery, the camera is soooooo frickin annoying, and collecting stars after a while just gets boring. I’m gonna complete this game (with the 70 stars only) just to say I did for once in my life, but I can’t see myself revisiting it again anytime soon. The only thing I absolutely love about this game at this time is the music in the first bomb level. Probably one of the finest pieces of music I have ever heard... so catchy! But overall, how can people actually like this game!?
That's not fair. The Mario 3D Stars game had terrible control in all three games, not just 64. You can't really judge a game unless on its original platform.
I think a significant amount of issues with control in this game come from the rereleases and and not the game itself. Mario 64 definitely is not as tight and kind of bizarre compared to any platformer released today, but 3D all stars and most other rereleases have some issues. For one, the analog stick is configured very poorly on all of Nintendo's N64 emulators, making it incredibly sensitive. This is terrible as the 64's analog stick is quite percise and even is constructed like an old computer mouse. Also there's significant input lag. The Wii U release was the worst, and while the Switch version is a bit better, there's still a decent amount on top of the Switch's universal 6 frames of input lag. I've had a huge amount of fun playing with this game's movement and environments for years and it's unfortunate that these invisible issues have put many people off from the game. I'd say the best way to play is playing the N64 version on an old crt TV, or trying out the fan made PC port which I'd assume doesn't have these lag or control problems.
No it sucked in its original state too. Emulators actually are a better bet since many hardbaked things on the console version can be adjusted and or fully changed helping to make gameplay more comfortable/enjoyable then it was back when it was released.
I'm not going to write an essay-length comment that just says "lol my opinion is right yours is wrong!!!!!!" but I'll try to put into words why I think the game isn't bad. I will also admit that Mario 64 can be hard to get into when comparing it to modern games. I know that the controls can seem like they're unresponsive or outdated, but I think that Mario 64 is one of those games that gets better the more you learn how to play it. I can see how that might seem unappealing at face value, but think of it like learning an instrument or something: you'll fumble around at first but the more you play, the more satisfying it feels to get good at it. again, I can see how this is unappealing, and there's definitely an argument as to why you shouldn't need to learn a game, like it's a chore or something, and just be able to play it. Learning how the controls work also makes going through the levels more exciting. Like sure, Lethal Lava Land is just a big box with platforms everywhere, but the amount of ways you're able to traverse it is what makes it fun. Not even for different stars, but if you asked 10 different players to reach the Bully platform, you'd probably get 10 different approaches. I will disagree with you saying that small platforms is bad level design though, the smaller platforms are just a means of making some sections more challenging. There are areas I won't try to defend, like the camera, or some stars basically requiring you to either exhaust every possible option or just look up a guide. But in terms of the overall game, I think it's one of those games you can keep having fun with just by virtue of the controls being fun. But if you don't like the controls, then yeah, of course it'll feel unfun. I hope the comments and dislikes and stuff don't discourage you from making more vids like this. The editing was great and I like your overall style. At the end of the day, it's just a video game, so no matter how much people argue or disagree about it, it ain't the most important thing in the world.
I saw your message on 4chan. This is how everyone should be like. But no, instead they attack him. I disagree, but I will respect your opinion. I just wish that everyone that disagreed with him would be respectful and actually come up with good reasons other than "muh nostalgia!!!!11!1!"
first off, genuine thank you for not spouting the tired "lol my opinion is right' schpeal-- very refreshing, and very appreciated secondly, the smaller platforms absolutely have their place, no arguments here, but i think that in select areas, they are definitely not... great. I made the argument with the Bowser level as proof of this. I guess those areas absolutely just stuck in my mind more than other better small platforms. As for that last paragraph, unfortunately, I am 100% deterred from doing more stuff like this. from what ive seen, its that people react SUPER negatively on seeing a different opinion, especially on a game that they/other people have ingrained into their mind as god tier. (ranting for just a second) i said in the video that i had no nostalgic attachment to SM64, and SEVERELY underestimated the fanbase surrounding it, setting me up for failure to start with. Also the next few videos will 100% be more positive and less critique-y.

@@ordinarygamer2655 a downvote is a Reddit term that basically equates to the dislike button. But on Reddit it dictates how far up the feed it is iirc.
I basically played every Mario game except for SM64 growing up because my parents bought a PS1 instead of an N64. I finally tried SM64 when it came out of the Mario collection on the switch and dear god it was a total nightmare. Wonky controls, shoddy camera, and some pretty terrible level designs imo.
How are the controls slippery? Mario stops pretty quickly, he turns sharp. He never "slips" more than in other games, and he's not incredibly fast. The Sonic comparison does not fit at all.
When you're in a big open area like Bob-omb Battlefield the controls can feel like magic, but most of the game wants you to do stupid tight platforming with them
Mario 64 deserves respect for doing it better than anyone before it (and there barely were any third person 3D games before it besides racing and fighting games), but various games iterated on its formula and made small but important adjustments here and there. Already in the same gen there are some better playing games like BK and Spyro 1-2 I think.
@@farhanzafar6129 No, because of how it evolved 3D platformers. Just play the few earlier ones and you'll see how. You don't have to respect it of course, it's just games lol
I want to say that i agree with all these points so bad but i know that some mario 64 stans would try to pin my age and how old the game is against me so i would just keep it to myself
mario 64 is janky in some aspects and I agree that the wing cap sucks (and I really feel your paint here 4:06) mabye try the pc port it has all kinds edits to choose from that make the game better movement wise and make the camera a real camera plus you can have HD models and textures if you want (or mabye emulate the game and use savestate)
There are alot of Super Mario 64 simps who don't want to admit that everything you say sucks. I've played it and the things you mentioned are true, they really suck. But I will kind of give it a pass since this is their first try in Super Mario 3d games.
I actually wasted my time to watch this video and I can say without a doubt just by looking at this person's gameplay, I can tell they just REALLY suck at this game.
I really don't like this game. I played and beat 6 levels before I said to myself, why am I touring myself? Then I played the ds version, which improved everything but directional controls. I personally believe Mario 64 didn't age well at all and yes I'm gen z, but I was poor and this was one of my first 3d games. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now.
I just finally got 120 stars today and I can't wait to never play this game ever again. Least fun, worst mainstream super mario. I'm grateful for the ideas the game implemented that were later perfected in future games. Besides that, the game in and of itself is torture. Putting in perspective that this was made for kids makes it that much sicker. Actual psychos created this game. If the personalized copy myth is true, my 3d all stars copy has Satan A.I. I made sure to complete the game because I am no quitter and beat almost all other super Mario's 100%, also to be able to properly review it. Camera and controls and levels are rigged against you the entire time and 95% of the time you die its because of those things rather than mistakes. It is a spiritual experience playing it because it is so miserable that faith and victory are the only things that keeps you going. This was a mostly unfun, unforgiving and unfulfilling experience that sprinkles in fun to manipulate you here and there. I will say that of all the video games that are remade, Super Mario 64 deserves(needs) it the most. Imagine this game with perfected controls and camera and updated life to the levels with an additional 120 stars added with new concepts based on original game concepts. That would be a must play remake But the game as is....sucks. Sorry it just does and the praise and fanfare for this game only made the experience more miserable because it's all a lie. The game was never good. It was always a lie that we just believed. Play the game today. It's not fun. You have no control of Mario(whole point of platformers) and its lifeless. We were lied to. Stop parrotting the lie. Super Mario 64 is the least fun and least enjoyable super mario.

half of the criticism is pretty good like the wing cap and the camera but the other half of criticism is just you not understanding how the actually play the game
The thing here, i played Mario Sunshine, i played Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, I played Mario Odyseey, I loved all of those. But Mario 64 is just so goddamn horrible, It looks like shit, the controls feel like shit, the levels seem bland AF in comparison to other games and its even shorter than the other games. The people that really like this game just have their nostalgia-glasses glued on. Amazing Video.
we all love this game because is actually hardcore compared to sunshine galaxy and odyssey, that bring more casual mechanics, and those might end up only serving for some stars instead of exploration and i don't see the problem in the controls since while they are a bit slippery they aren't as bad as the DS remake, more like they aren't even slippery, they are just hard to get used to also the camera restrictions are only for the lineal levels unlike crash 4 where you can't see most of the boxes because the camera only goes forward also compared to which games? If you're going to compare it to sunshine galacy and odyssey it would be a bruh moment since those consoles came years after the game was released, obviously they would have advanced
I think it definitely would of helped if this was one of the first games I played as a kid, because then at least the nostalgia would've held me back from not liking this as much as I do, but man this game just doesn't hold up to me. I know for the time it was created it was revolutionary but it did not age well at ALL. I don't like the graphics, everything feels so clunky, and it makes it so unenjoyable. I'd love to see what this game would look like remastered

I love MARIO 64 STUPID
Are you saying that you love Mario 64, and that I am stupid, or are you saying that you love Mario 64 being stupid
In old games we learned to move the character relative to the camera because you didn't always have control, and sometimes you need to actually adjust your movement in real time as the camera shifts, its a bit of a mind eff if you've come from modern games where the camera is often behind the character but its just how it is, I'm not sure if you are going back to it but try this if you do:
In the castle, practice moving the camera around while trying to run in a straight line, so no matter what the camera is doing try to keep on that straight line. If you master this the platforming won't be a problem anymore, its similar to circle strafing in an FPS, if you've ever tried that. Hope that helps.
Bowser is not the main villain of this game, it's the camera.

I find it funny that when people compare Mario 64 to modern games they get tons of hate. Yet when people make videos about how Sonic Adventure is terrible nowadays and the video gets no dislikes. 🤔
It's retarded on both ends. Sonic Adventure is just more noticeable in where it's 'aged' now a days. 3D Mario still takes ques from 64
Sonic Adventure was pretty bad when it came out. I gave it a free pass at the time because it looked great on my new Dreamcast but I knew it wasn’t on par with the N64 3d platformers such as Mario64 and Banjo Kazooie when it came to how it played.

.my friend who loves early Nintendo convinced me it was worth €60 to play, but It wasn’t remastered like other older platformers and it’s far more expensive. It’s just not aged as well as others.
But Nintendo just get a pass for some reason.
If it was cheaper to play I wouldn’t be annoyed at all by it, but the fact it’s so highly praised and expensive to play makes me more critical.

Same for me with other older games. When compared to modern games with more refined control schemes and all, older games can literally suck now. I take the Michael Bay style Resident Evil 6 over the old Playstation 1 RE games. Tank controls are the worst.

First 3D platformer was Crash Bandicoot, and they nailed the controls. Having slippery movement is not caused by limited technology, but bad game design.
@@klaud7311 you on that Heisenberg shit lol
People excuse its flaws and act as if it's not bad cause it's old. But SMW and SMB3 are older and are still great.

Props to u having to write this

Ya spooked me for a second there with that heading haha- I thought it was going to be completely different than I just read, but I was delightfully surprised that it wasn’t the case
And yeah, public perception is completely wack. But I’ll always be an advocate of “if you don’t like it, then don’t play it”. This goes for games you half-played as well. It was like that for me and Animal Crossing haha

One of the things about super mario 64 is that everyone says that, “It’s an incredible game because it was so revolutionary at the time” but the problem with that is if you are reviewing or talking about it as a good game hold it up to the games that come out today
1. The graphics: Yes I know that the graphics can’t be good because it’s on the N64, but if you’re holding it up to other games that have come out today like odyssey, you can’t just say, “it was incredible when it came out” but that defeats the purpose of comparing two games
2. The fucking camera
3. The movement is so stiff and slippery, so combined with the camera you can’t move or see anything
4. The water is so slow and stupid so it’s annoying to get to any place underwater
5. Imo the level design feels very boring and repetitive, and as someone who was an Xbox gamer until the switch so I didn’t have an N64 this is my first time playing this game I just don’t know where to go in some situations.
There will probably be more reasons soon
i do agree with that but those are, again, reasons of why the game is difficult ratter than why is it bad
also, why do you have to compare mario 64 to mario odyssey knowing that the later one came like a decade after that? That would be like comparing smash 64 to smash ultimate or kirby's dream land to star allies because of graphics, knowing that the graphics at that time arent advanced, not to mention is the first game, they would obviously evolve in all that time, thats also why remakes exists

@@Champi4Real well people from the old era could easily consider it as a good game and possibly their favorite, it's hard to find a person like that
The thing is that the newest games are more casual than the older ones, look at how MV Perry's favorite game is ocarina of time and Nathaniel Bandy's one is SM64, they aren't blinded by nostalgia, they are just prefering harder games, sunshine introduced the F.L.U.D.D, who made you jump exaggerated distances, galaxy and galaxy 2 introduce controls that are a bit uncomfortable for non-casual players, and in odyssey most of the challenges are really easy, specially when you can copy enemies like kirby and it has an abusive amount of checkpoints even in the shortest levels that allow you to warp beetwen them, it even failed the concept of being an open world
meanwhile, Mario 64 focuses also on exploring and not only collecting stars, it even has a reward for getting all the stars, which is going to the top of the castle and getting infinite lives so that losing mid-exploration is no longer frustrating... which is absent in mario 64 DS smh, and in galaxy and sunshine i dont remember the reward for winning all the stars/suns, and in odyssey you only get as reward even more moons that instead of being satisfactory just becomes annoying, and there is no reward on winning those special moons

I got all stars when I was 13, did I just blame myself for the games terrible controls or were they actually better on an N64?
You bring up a very good point that I haven’t considered up to this point. It absolutely makes a lot of sense haha
No it sucked in its original state too.
Emulators actually are a better bet since many hardbaked things on the console version can be adjusted and or fully changed helping to make gameplay more comfortable/enjoyable then it was back when it was released.
I know there's a N64 controller peripheral for the Switch, but I can't vouch for how good it is.
@@dyrr836 buying the controller doesnt fix anything with the stick, its built into the emulator, so it still sucks.
I just wish that everyone that disagreed with him would be respectful and actually come up with good reasons other than "muh nostalgia!!!!11!1!"
first off, genuine thank you for not spouting the tired "lol my opinion is right' schpeal-- very refreshing, and very appreciated
secondly, the smaller platforms absolutely have their place, no arguments here, but i think that in select areas, they are definitely not...
Also the next few videos will 100% be more positive and less critique-y.

mario 64 is janky in some aspects and I agree that the wing cap sucks (and I really feel your paint here 4:06) mabye try the pc port it has all kinds edits to choose from that make the game better movement wise and make the camera a real camera plus you can have HD models and textures if you want (or mabye emulate the game and use savestate)
There are alot of Super Mario 64 simps who don't want to admit that everything you say sucks. I've played it and the things you mentioned are true, they really suck. But I will kind of give it a pass since this is their first try in Super Mario 3d games.
Zoomer absolutely btfo by a game 6 yr olds could figure out easily on 1996. Brutal embarrassment.
🤡
I hate this game so much that I have achieved to get all 120 stars and find Yoshi. I hate myself for doing that.
This video should be titled: I suck at Super Mario 64.....And Here's Why
I actually wasted my time to watch this video and I can say without a doubt just by looking at this person's gameplay, I can tell they just REALLY suck at this game.
b- but is almost IMPOSSIBLE you guys!!!!
@@MegacoreTeamJake if you didn't like the video why did you keep watching it?
@@dragonmaster834 if I was going to critique the video, I wanted to watch the entire thing and give a true judgement.

Super Mario 64 is the least fun and least enjoyable super mario.
my guy did you really just compare a the very first 3d platformer to 3d platformers that came out recently? zoomers jump in front of a train challenge
Maybe lay off the nostalgia and try some actual morality
absolutely agree, Brett C
@@shade221 someone's putting words in my mouth. i dont disagree that it doesnt hold up 100% and that the camera is absolute garbage. I'm literally only complaining about the fact hes comparing it to games that JUST CAME OUT, like no fucking shit the games that came out recently are better designed, its in no way fair to compare the two
@@shade221 lol i never said he wasnt aware they came out 20 years apart, im saying he shouldnt compare games that are 20 years apart. your reading comprehension isnt the best
@@shade221 jesus dude in my first response to you i literally said i agree that mario 64 is dated in many ways. its not fair to compare games that came out 20 years apart because the technology is so vastly improved nowadays, obviously mario 64 isnt as good as mario odyssey because odyssey has 20 more years of technology it can utilize. you wouldnt compare the wright brother's first plane to current aircrafts would you? and youre putting words in my mouth by assuming that I dont think 64 is dated, which i never said.

half of the criticism is pretty good like the wing cap and the camera but the other half of criticism is just you not understanding how the actually play the game
Amazing Video.
we all love this game because is actually hardcore compared to sunshine galaxy and odyssey, that bring more casual mechanics, and those might end up only serving for some stars instead of exploration
and i don't see the problem in the controls since while they are a bit slippery they aren't as bad as the DS remake, more like they aren't even slippery, they are just hard to get used to
also the camera restrictions are only for the lineal levels unlike crash 4 where you can't see most of the boxes because the camera only goes forward
also compared to which games? If you're going to compare it to sunshine galacy and odyssey it would be a bruh moment since those consoles came years after the game was released, obviously they would have advanced

I think it definitely would of helped if this was one of the first games I played as a kid, because then at least the nostalgia would've held me back from not liking this as much as I do, but man this game just doesn't hold up to me. I know for the time it was created it was revolutionary but it did not age well at ALL. I don't like the graphics, everything feels so clunky, and it makes it so unenjoyable. I'd love to see what this game would look like remastered
