    I really liked this idea. Sometimes we don't always take the original into account because Pentatonix tends to blow us away. Hope comparisons become a regular feature. Nice suggestion, Jane!!

    Shai does an a Capella version of the song that Pentatonix got the ooh-da-da-do-da-do and some of the blends... Pentatonix was great of course but comparing the acapella versions might be even better

    Pentatonix didn’t just take it up a notch. They took it up about 10 notches. They bring this richness to everything they do.

    I really enjoyed the comparison to the videos. I believe the Shari was a more of a sensuality during the 90s. The Baywatch reference had me snickering as I'm 55 and all I remember was Pamela Anderson. In the Pentatonix version Just throwing quick snippets if Kirsten just giving a look pulled the sensuality into play. Well done and a great idea.👍👍👍

    One thing to note is that Shai has 2 versions of this song. The original (which is Acapella) and the remix which is the one you compared to. Pentatonix and Jason D incorporated both in this cover. The first half they did the Acapella version of Shai's song and the 2nd half where Scott comes in they were covering the remix version. Quite frankly i LOVE all 3 versions. Have always loved Shai and love PTX!

    Isn't it ridiculous what Pentatonix can do with a cover? I always love their covers compared to the originals. I can't think of an exception, and this collab was off the charts. And I love that PTX doesn't need to be the center of attention in a collaboration. They let Jason Derulo shine (and Scott). Love the idea of comparing an original to a PTX cover!!

    What I find interesting is that when ptx does a colab they let the guest shine, but they also bring out the best in the guest. You might say ptx sets up the guest for success.

    I love the comparison format! We Pentaholics do generally feel that the PTX version rises above the original in most cases, so it would be interesting to get the opinion of someone well versed in the realm of music to put that conviction to the test.
    I suspect the acid test might be "Bohemian Rhapsody", as even Pentatonix long avoided covering it because... well, hell... it's Queen! And they didn't want to do an unworthy cover. Whether it was better or not (and I'm sure there will be vocal advocates on both sides of that argument...), I'd definitely contend that it was, at the very least, worthy, and that Freddie would have approved.

    Jerod, this was a great idea -- comparing an original with a PTX cover. I LOVED the blues feel of Shai's version, but -- I may be slightly biased (LOL), PTX's version just rocks the planet!! The vocals and harmonies are much more prominent and clear. Both were good, but my heart is set on PTX. . . PS. Jason DeRullo just rocks it!!

    Weird thing about Shai's version of this is the music. They were originally an acapella group, this song had no music until it was re-released. I liked it better without to be honest. The "vibe" was 100% 90's..lol.. over sexed with heavy bass feels like it's been a million years but I was in high school bk then. I like the PTX version better! ❤ your reactions!😍😍

    I do like this format, Jerod. I typically prefer what PTX does over the original artist predominantly because I don't listen to a lot of pop/r&b type music simply because it's a lot of looping and autotuning. Once PTX's version is burned in my brain, it's hard to accept any other version. When Papaoutai came out, I decided to seek out the original first and then watched the PTX version. Now I do that for ever cover song I encounter. It deepens my appreciation for what PTX does, how gifted they are at deconstruction, reconstruction and elevation of the original without losing the original intent. I agree whole heartedly that Jason's voice was more powerful than Shai's and the collab pushed this one over the top! Thank you again for your reaction.

    • @shirleyujest7786

      I didn’t. I stated that I don’t listen to a lot of pop/r&b. Here’s a grammar lesson on the use of forward slash between words:

    I remember this song first time round (Yes I'm THAT old 😱) it was HUGE (I'm in Ireland and only huge hits made a dent over seas and this was really popular due to mtv branching out over here on our national broadcaster on a sunday) I LOVED this song back then and PTX version is AMAZING. Shai was of their time obviously and they did a version with the start that PTX use here (The do dada do do do) but PTX just killed it, and Jason's voice is spectacular

    YEP, No question which group was the best. I used to do these comparisons more than I do now but it is almost always PTX that comes out on top. And, with just five voices and no instruments. They are the masters at what they do. Incredible talent and they all have an attitude of giving 110% for everything they do.

    This wasn’t a fair comparison. Shai does an A Capella version of their song which is the version Pentatonix came with. I love both groups but I’m an 80’s baby so Shai won me over back when I first heard this as it was magical during its time. Pentatonix added a bit more, but Shai hit it in the element that it was in.

  • @JP-hz4tg
    @JP-hz4tg 6 років тому

    You need an addendum with Shai's acapella version of this song. Actually, that would have been the better original comparrison. Now that you've heard the PTX version, Shai's is a step down though still one of my favorites in the day. I had a cassette single copy. Still have it, in fact. ☺

    • @JerodM
      @JerodM  6 років тому +2

      I avoided the acapella one because while pentatonix is only acapella, they are filling in beats and bass. Shai's acapella version is good, but the comparison was different because it lacked the low end and beat.

    I like Pentatonix but I don't really like this version of the song it's so soulless compared to the original. This song is about losing somebody you thought was the love of your life a swearing off love ever again unless you can find that one special love. It's sad and mournful not peppy and aria's to show of your vocal skills. It's passion not playtime.

    Never heard of the second group other than Jason Derulo tbh and while listening I was disappointed with the cover that the second group did because I feel like they did way too much. When I hear this song I expect something romantic and soft and smooth the second group can sing but I was not a fan of the cover. The second group was too loud and just ruined the whole vibe for me. Sometimes we need to leave classics alone because knowing how to sing does not mean you would sound good in just any song. Sorry not sorry

  • @secanes024
    @secanes024 3 роки тому

    Ok, how can you compare the two. One came out with the original song in 1992, Plantonix basically copied everything Shai did. The original song will always be the best version because it let Plantonix copy each note and just add their touch to it. If Plantonix was the original singers than you can say they were best but all they did was speed up the beat and make it more of a dancing song. Shai version was a r&b slow jam. Plantonix did not add anything to it but a beat box. They copied every note Shai did

    • @JerodM
      @JerodM  3 роки тому

      How can I compare them? Because one group sang it and then another one sang it. I want to see how each group interpreted the song and how they delivered the vocals. One group did it without any beat, Pentatonix* did it with a beat. That’s the point of the comparison. Not to say one is better or worse but to hear the two side by side.

    • @secanes024
      @secanes024 3 роки тому

      @@JerodM but that's not true. The original song by Shai was done without a beat. That's why Plantonix did a remix. Shai performed it acapela without any beat boxing or anything. They sung it with no music at all. No disrespect to you but that's why Plantonix or Jason didn't change a note because it was already done before almost 20 years ago. I give them respect because they didn't messed up the remix and they sped up the tempo. Shai has always been known for singing acapela. Just like boys to men. Trust Plantonix is following in those people steps. They are a good group but they are nothing we haven't seen before in r&b

    Awesome! I'm so glad you liked my idea. Thanks for fulfilling my request so soon. The first time I watched this video, I didn't like the Shai version very much. I'm listening again right now, and this time I do. It's not fair to compare a recording and video from--what, 1992, was it?--with a recent one, but I do really prefer the clarity and "cleanness" (is that a word?) of the PTX/JD version, as opposed to the soft, kind of fuzzy texture of Shai's version. The solidity of Avi's bass provides an anchor. Little nitpick--Jason's highest notes sound a bit shrill to me. He's right on pitch, though, and really amazing. All the rest of the time his voice is beautiful. I wouldn't mind another collab. I wonder why, whenever PTX does a collab with another soloist, the PTX soloist is always Scott. (Since I wrote "always," somebody is sure to tell me about an exception.) Finally--I really love the effect of the stripes of colored lights. The green on Kevin's face is breathtaking. Jerod, PLEASE do more comparative videos when the opportunity arises!

    Based on Jason Derulo's most popular songs you wouldn't really think he was as talented as he really is because those are some ridiculous silly songs they are catchy but still didn't show his talent like this one did and also when he was on sytycd that showed how talented he is in dance. This was definitely better than the original it was just so full and awesome. mitch even said that Jason could sing higher than him I thought that was funny. Also it was Kevin that saw Jason at one of the awards shows and just walked up to him and said hey we're pentatonix and we should do something together and then this happened! :)

    Ptx always adds so many flavors to a song: in this one, Avi’s beautiful bass, Scott’s lead with his runs, Mitch even had a little run section that was SO cool and unexpected, Kirsten added glamour and the full backgrounds, and KO with the beats, plus the masterful arrangement and Jason D. was so powerful! I also went and listened to the Shai version when I first heard this - and it's funny that you used the word "creepy" when talking about it, because that was my reaction to the Shai video. What was with the girl in the warehouse mopping, dancing around with the mop, wearing a see-through dress? I know the 90's had a different vibe about women in videos than the current one, but that was still bad. Anyway, I love the PTX version, and Avi's bass notes at the end "boom, boom, BOOM" sealed the deal.

    Have you heard the acapella version? It's way better than this sensual version, and makes it the comparison a bit fairer imo. It's Shai's acapella version that became a hit back in the day.

      I have. I chose to compare this version because of the use of percussion and bass. It mor closely resembled what PTX did.

      I disagree.they don't have the soul or feeling of Shai.

    Loved the comparison. I love both versions being a fan of the original from Shai, but agree that the PTX collaboration with Derulo took it to another level. At some point it sounded like it had more of a Reggae beat which I enjoyed as I love listening to Reggae. Would love to see more comparisons. Can you react to Postmodern Jukebox ft Haley Reinhardt singing Creep or Postmodern Jukebox ft Vonzell Solomon singing "Every Breath You Take" (Gospel cover) 😊

    I remember Shai's original, that was my teen years, and Pentatonix and Jason KILLED this track! So fantastic (as usual PTX are better than the original)

    Amazing reaction! Could you react to “flashback”. They’re also an acapella group. Preferably react to their cover of “you don’t do it for me anymore”

    I'm so glad you did this. I've never actually heard the original. This song was on PTX's original album, so I was surprised to learn fairly recently that it's a cover. Only Pentatonix could take a song that boring and kick it up to a hundred!

    Shai was like the poor man's Boyz II Men.. Jodeci was the bad boy version of Boyz II Men... I miss 90s R&B...
    Shai did an acapella version of this song, too... a little less moaning in the background...;)

    Oh wow! I had never seen the Shai video... hum... So much to say. I really didn’t like the strings in their version. It actually made them sound off key a lot. The tempo too slow. It made this beautiful song not sexy and sultry but douchey. The guys were a little too much (really not sexy to me) and MY GOD! What’s up with the girl MOPPING!!! (Barf, gag, gasp 🤮).
    Now PTX has class and totally gave this song the right vibe. Perfect tempo and beat (thank you Kevin), great vocals (all of them) and the BASS! Yes Avi! Now this song makes any girl feel beautiful. It speaks to our heart.

    Honestly, I didn’t enjoy the Shai part. I mean I loved this song when it first came in the 90’s but it was acapella on the radio. I ended up fast forwarding to the Pentatonix version. Thanks though for trying something new.
