Based on the novel by Mildred Savage, this film contains what was probably Troy Donahue's best performance. As Parrish McLean, a young man who wants to learn tobacco farming and finds himself not only dealing with a rival, the wealthy and powerful Judd Raike (Karl Malden), but he finds himself the object of affection for three lovely and very different young women - Lucy (Connie Stevens) one of the workers on the farm; Allison (Diane McBain), the daughter of Parrish's employer, Sala Post (Dean Jagger), and Paige (Sharon Hugueny), Judd Raike's daughter. As the battle for power continues, Parrish not only has to deal with the scheming of Judd Raike, whom his mother Ellen (Claudette Colbert in her final film appearance) falls for and marries, but he also has a rivalry with Judd's sons, Edgar (Hampton Fancher) and Wiley (David Knapp) the latter whom later weds Allison. Who will win and who will Parrish end up with? It's beautifully photographed, with music by Max Steiner and Warner Brothers did a wonderful restoration. No doubt the studio was trying to make Troy Donahue into the next James Dean (hence the red windbreaker he wears at times in the movie). Max Steiner's music from the movie used in this video are "Tobacco Theme" and "Paige's Theme".

No you don't see much beauty around these days. The actors today look more like your next door neighbor. Yes, the 60's produced some golden stars that included Troy Donahue, Diane McBain, Connie Stevens, Suzanne Pleshette, Ty Hardin, Bob Conrad and the most talented of the lot, the multi-dimensional Barbra Streisand. Yes, Suzanne Pleshette did have the most prolific of careers, doing an enormous amount of work on stage, film and television. I doubt there was a day in her life when she found time to relax because her filmography reads like from here to eternity. Diane McBain was the most photogenic of these stars. Sadly when Warner Bros. dropped her, her career went downhill all the way. She made a brief comeback of sorts with Elvis Presley's "Spinout" and then again slipped into 'B' and 'C' grade movies. Connie Stevens prospered with her big-time perfume business. So it left just Pleshette and Streisand with a longevity in their careers that was amazing!!!

Memories from times when America had more pretty girls per square mile, especially in the South, than any other place on Earth. Nowadays, of course, not so much!
Why have the flowers all turned into WEEDS?
