Agree. Maybe good for inside a car door, or slipping inside a jacket pocket, but I'm sure that spine would pop right out after the first smack into a tree.
I never said heat treat protects against rust, it's the carbon content that does. Heat treat is what makes a knife, I can safely say with proper heat treat 440c is good at holding an edge. You flipped the spectrum on me, heat treat can't necessarily make a bad steel great, it makes already performing steel even better.
Hey if you're serious about wanting one of these I have 3 or 4 like new just missing the box and have never been used to cut anything or been carried I'd be willing to part with at least 1 of them. Let me know. Also I'm looking for a microtech crosshair I'd be willing to trade plus money. We could go through eBay or something else just me know
All factors considered(edge retention, corrosion resistance, and sharpenability) s30v takes the trophy for best all around steel. once you start treating steel, you are taking away from its original qualities, whether they be good or bad. if you take away bad qualities you are improving the steel
I like S30 on fighting knives and folders, but I wouldn't have it for my survival knife steel. Carbon or tool steel is way tougher. 3V is good as well depending on the manufacturer and if you can field sharpen it. The appeal for 1095 is it can be quite literally sharpened on anything from atop a car window, to a smooth river rock and it's plenty tough so long as you are not being stupid with it. Any knife can break under the right conditions.
The US Army for the most part wants serrations on their knives. Almost every knife you see sold at the PX has serrations. Its silly but that's why Gerber and everyone else design their knives this way.
The sheath is really bad, it's very hard to remove the knife and for carry however I love the knife, handle material has great grip, manageable and light. Knife=8 sheath=0
Bluegrass Survival I have seen biased views on many things in this world but none are as bad as Gerber bias. I think many of these guys who trash talk Gerber have either 1. Only watched videos on their China garbage being abused and broke by teenage kids...or 2. Just assume every Gerber knife is China made and jump on the hate Gerber band wagon cause it's popular to do so. ....or 3. Never actually used an American made Portland Oregon 420hc Gerber for any length of time to even know personally anything about their knives and to have an honest unbiased opinion. I speak from experience, my Prodigy is the best knife I've ever owned. I bought it almost a year ago and only sharpened it once because of my own neglectful accident. Last summer I hit the edge on a rock and rolled the edge a bit, regardless I was going to give it a steeper angel so it worked out great. I have used this knife for months now every single day and haven't had to do any aggressive sharpening. A few swipes on the strop is all she needs. Gerber's 420hc is IMHO just as good and maybe even better than many 1095 blades. They have an awesome heat treatment, I plan on getting the Strongarm and have actually sold my small collection of other blades. I have the Condor Bushlore, Mora Pro Robust and my trusty GERBER PRODIGY soon the Strongarm will be my EDC. I am officially a Gerber fan, If I had listened to peoples comments and even some well known reviewers biased reviews , I wouldn't have bought my Prodigy.....I am so glad I didn't ride the hate wagon cause their Portland Oregon blades are awesome, and very cost friendly.
I own many knives made of stainless steel and I'd hate to tell you this but they have come a long way in their heat treat and manufacture. I have a Fallkniven A1 that I'd put it up against an Esse 6 any day.
R U kidding me? You must have never used a knife out of S30V HARD. It will break! No stainless steel will ever be as strong or as tough as non stainless. And that is a FACT. Compare your beloved CPM S30V to CPM 3V... There is absolutelly no comparison. I dont care for stain resistance. I care for my knives. Always keep them oiled up. PS. S30V better than S35VN? Hell NO.
It's made in Portland Oregon dude? And the last time I checked that's a long way from China. Also, S30v is an American Steel and is pretty good on folders or combat knives and such for it's edge holding capabilities. I tend to lean towards 1095 for my survival knife needs or CPM 3V so long as I can sharpen it easy.
@@bluegrasssurvival9423 95% of gerbers products are made in China 🇨🇳 dude. Dude lol what are you like 90 yrs old 😂? That's awesome 👌 thanks for the laugh I haven't heard anyone use dude in at least 10yrs dude lol 😆 🤣 😄 😂
I'm glad to see it is offered in S30V.
iv been waitin for this

Man gerber is stepping up...but I think kydex is the way to go those plastic sheaths dull your blade so fast!!!

do you guys ever go to gun and knife shows? like the one @ south Florida fairgrounds
Very nice one, but think a better belt loop needed
Wish I would have bought one back then! I just bought one on eBay all the way from Italy for about $230...

Never mind I hadn't seen your childish replies I wouldn't sell you one of those for 100k.

Thanks for the demo!

Is there a non serrated version?
How about 4" gerber de facto knife?
awesome knife
Let me guess no plain edge version?
serrations arent always bad. but its true. they are defi
s30v is about the best steal money can buy
if gerber makes it plain edge and in standard black handle stone wash blade, it will sell like hotcakes.
the junk gerber knives to the left the good gerber knives to the right. this is the Right one
Looks like a dive knife.
The sheath is really bad, it's very hard to remove the knife and for carry however I love the knife, handle material has great grip, manageable and light. Knife=8 sheath=0
Blade steel means almost nothing, it's all about heat treat; which in this case I would assume is not great.
Gerber does an awesome heat treat on their knives. Look at what they can do with 420HC.

Airik1111 I agree 100%! I have both the Prodigy and the Strongarm and they are simply awesome!
Did you have to ask?
I want non serrated!

Cool looking knife but not a very good survival tool. IMO
??? if you got very excited if he said CPM 3V,S5,L6,9260 then i would understand but shitty s30v? Its a stainless steel... its fragile

this blade would be amazing if it wasnt serrated!!
I think it's badass because it is serrated he'll do anything a regular edge will do but more!
... not mainstream... I hate swipe
Sheath is shit for belt carry. This knife seems to be another Gerber fail!
Serrations = awful
CHEAP CHINESE MADE KNIFE DONT BUY , SHAME ON GERBER
Dude, this is made in Portland Oregon and its S30v steel. If a US made S30v knife is junk, then you don't know crap about blades bro.
