Preparing Carrots for the Cold Winter Weather | John Deere 7R 330 + Loaders + Straw Layers

Some weeks ago i got the chance to film this amazing setup in the northern part of Denmark at Limfjords Danske Rodfrugter A/S. Here we have a John Deere 7R 330 with a Jones Equipment straw layer, on duty in the field laying straw on carrots to protect them from frost during the winter weather. On the top of the John Deere we have a special built transport bridge carrying 4 bales to feed the straw layer. Plastic is layed on top of the carrots and afterward the straw is put on.
Not a setup that you see everyday.

Is the overwintering of carrots intended for seed production?

No, it just keeps them better in the ground and they can be lifted as and when the customers require. Saves on cold storage too

It just gets chopped and ploughed back into the ground

@@danielplazura4141I was wondering how many bales are used per acre of field? Do they remove the straw before they dig the carrots? As you said it would be nice to see how they dig the carrots with that much straw covering them.

@@sasfarmer the plastic that is laid down under the straw is used to pull the straw off the row and dump on the row next to it which has been harvested. They use a reeler to roll up the plastic thus flipping the straw off the row.

@@rolfwhite2563 Thanks for the explanation. I did not realiaze they were putting plastic down over the carrots. I work on a cereal wheat, canola farm in Alberta Canada and find it very interesting how other growers manage their crops.

What happens to the strings?

4 strings is remowed before loading.. the lasr 2 is stuck inside machine and removed 3 times a day..

Yes, in a way! We had a dry year here a few years ago and the contractor was able to re-bale the straw that was used to cover the carrots. It had a second use!
