    The Sharkfest Swim (2018) is a race from Alcatraz Island to the shores of San Francisco. Unfortunately high winds prevented the intended swim, but a nearly 1 mile course was set up as a substitute in Aquatic Cove in the San Francisco Bay. This video documents my 5 months of training and shows footage from the actual race itself.
    Much tanks to Kim Akins and Billy deRouville for joining me in the swim and Kayla Smith and Tim Jones for their filming and moral support!

    Randy, This was VERY INTERESTING and a great companion to your Alcatraz Island video. I have always been very impressed by your physical strength and stamina, this really proves you’re capable. Was a nice touch to include all of the information about your training at the beginning, before we saw how you did. Glad you didn’t run into any sharks! THANKS FOR SHARING, . . . Mike

    Wow congrats! Now that is a challenge you should be proud of to complete. A lot of hard work went into that and you really did a great job. I feel like I say this every time we talk, but your editing was awesome. I love the little flash backs and your transitions were amazing. Congrats again. Amazing video as always.

    Hey cool man! I was competing in triathlons up until a couple of years ago and one year did an Olympic Tri that includes a one mile swim in the Potomac river - which was basically an open ocean swim (the “river is 4 miles across) and we had strong tidal currents to work against. So yeah I can definitely relate to what you went through. I know the water temperature in SF is super cold as well so good job to you!

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  6 років тому

      Never knew that about you, impressive! It was a fun experience, my first open water race. I'm not an endurance guy, so finishing in the top 60% was a great encouragement for me. I remember my pathetic start in the pool when I began training. The race always provides great motivation to work out! I need it!

    • @ottmountain733
      @ottmountain733 6 років тому

      Great job transitioning from spinster to endurance swimmer. Like you, I remember doing 70 lengths of the pool in training. Torture! Yeah I changed jobs in 2014 and the irregular schedule completely threw me off my training and racing schedule. Used to run marathons and many other races too but since then, nothing. Recently I’ve been toying with the idea of signing up for a race in the Fall just to get motivated again. Without a goal ahead I have no reason to go out and train

      Thanks so much! The original swim from Alcatraz was 1.5 miles, but that was cancelled so the race was just conducted in the Bay in a protected area. That race was .7 miles and yes, my time was 20 minutes. I was happy with that, but the leader in my age group did it in 14!

    So you didn’t even “escape Alcatraz”? Just swam around the Dolphin Club cove?

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  5 років тому

      Yeah, they cancelled the planned race 2 days before the event due to dangerous water conditions. From what we were told, four organizations need to "sign-off" on the event (NPS, Coast Guard...) and all were no-gos. Disappointing, but at least they let us swim around the cove. Not what I wanted, but still a fun and memorable experience.

    Just an FYI for anyone coming to the Bay Area. It’s very common for people to break windows of cars, specifically rental cars, because of the chance your luggage will be in the car.

      Thanks for mentioning this for any would-be travelers. Strange thing was that they took both my friend's travel bags (clothes) and left my camera bag and drone. The inconsideration sure did make a rough first night in SF for all of us, especially with the swim early the following morning..
