My alter ego is Johnny Sins. He's been a teacher, a military man, a doctor, a mentor, a personal trainer. A man that has helped many young women reach their dream and a man that other men look up to. When it gets hard on race day, I am Johnny Sins.
Mindset is everything, it get's you out of bed on that one day, keeps you pushing that one time you thought you couldn't and will keep you calm and save the effort for that moment you were working towards. The third person is not fighting your struggle, the ability to distance yourself from suffering and objectivly see your situation and act accordingly is a skill more valuable than any gadget any store can offer.
I have listened to their book, it is totally f-ing awesome. I use it when I do my job as a professional musician and their advice works! One of the few books that don’t just describe a problematic situation but also gives solutions. Thank you so much Leslie and Simon
Interesting, i have always done this when presenting to a big crowed. I get nervous every time, to the point where I could cancel the whole thing. and so 10 years ago developed a character called lightman; which was based on Tim Roths character of the same name from a tv show called lie to me. It was a big help, my wife always laughed after because she could see just how well it worked. Never thought of applying the same concept to sports. Genius.
I have not a name for it. But I have my routines. I watch clips about Lance Armstrong and his comeback at the time, listen to music like Synergy and Lose yourself and ignore everything around me. Fully focused and hyping myself.
I had a car accident when I was riding my bike 3 weeks before my first Ironman, my bike got stolen the day before I had to bring it to the expo. I didn't have an alter ego but someone told me; "maybe someone doesn't want you to do the race." I was no way I will do this sh*t. It hail during the bike too, hahaha. I did this race and I finish 40 on my age group. I don't know what drives me but that may be the alter ego she is talking about. I just haven't named her.
In business/work I've always done something similar, picturing myself as Claire Underwood before a big presentation. Never thought to do this for sport though, great video!
This was great. I'm curious if you can pass on some mental and physical training books to help..or maybe have a show with recommendations and how that helped you personally 😎
I’m not sure what to think of this video. What happened to our self esteem? All the wins and achievements get awarded to your alter ego, what does that leave you for your day to day self?
Why have just one alter ego - treat yourself to at least three..one for the swim, one for the bike and one for the run..maybe four one for the party after :)
Recommend reading Alter Ego by Todd Herman. My training and race day alter ego is a combo of Connor mcgregor and Rich Roll. Calm and confident, and then brutal and crazy 😝
I thought this was a totally different video. Could have done with that particular video before my half marathon today... Talk about rubbing it in GTN.
Okay, so I got that one completely wrong, I thought you were actually going to talk about how not to defecate your suit while in the race 😂
😬
yep. same here. that's why I even clicked the video 🤦
still.. this alter ego thing is quite interesting, I might try it.

Best UA-cam video title of the day?

I am not a triathlete, but as a rower I'm also always working on my mental strength. This video will definitely help me. Thanks GTN :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
A fascinating video, really good to see how a top professional copes. More of these please.
Glad you enjoyed it!
So many parallels with the music performance world!

I’m with you Heather. This is fascinating. Great content! :)
Great video, thank you!!! I really appreciate how open she is
Great item. My mother in law has coped with her fear heights when walking up mountains by repeating the mantra “I am Dervla Murphy”.
What a great video, the mind can be really strong.

For me just hear in your mind the 'eye of the tiger', and bring out your inner rocky with a few air punches to the music.

Simon's a legend. Knight him!

Strong sock game from both wonderful women👍👍💪💪💪🦄
So, Immodium? Oh. Sports psychology. Cool!
Embodied cognition.., nice.
Thanks for sharing, Paddy. Even if you needed to turn to "Lesley" to do it ;-)

OK, I've been healed from schizophrenia, but where I am now when I would need myself the most?
My alter ego is paddy McGuiness.
Let the athlete, see the race course!
Haha 😂
All I could think of was Paula Radcliffe
Does this mean at the next race everyone is gonna rock up to the start and act like an asshole like McGregor😂
Step 1: shit before the race
Step 2: don't abuse gels
Where can we get those socks? Elite level sock game
Wayne Filer Check out Ridge Supply for Lesley's socks.
Reminds me of jalter and salter

Why doesn't she pretend she's daniella ryf or lucy charles.
Because she's got Paddy McGinty! 💪
