The amazing thing is that previously he was an investor in the slave trade and even the captain of slave ships. He meant it when he wrote about the amazing grace that "saved a wretch like me". The part with the different tune and "my chains fell off" and "unending love" was written more recently especially for a film about the life of John Newton, and has deservedly become popular.
