+Gladiator in a Suit This version of the mythos is actually a Roman re-write. Her origins as a mythological character dates back to at least the 5th century BC, while the Romanized version is 2nd century BC. (300 years!) Her depictions and mentions found in writing paint her as a demon, filled with rage, and having been there a very long time, mythologically, an "ancient one". As much as I like the cruel irony of the Roman version, the Greeks likely had the right one.

The story of Medusa is twisted and wrong. It was always told from the prospective of man. The true story of Medusa is this; Medusa was a beautiful priestess who swore herself to Athena. She promised to remain a virgin maiden for all of her days, but one day Poseidon came to the temple and saw medusa, a beautiful young woman who he wanted for his own. She refused him knowing she had made a vow to Athena, so Poseidon raped her in the temple. Athena was angered by such an act in her temple and a broken vow, so she punished Medusa for letting it happen. She turned her into a gorgon, a hideous creature no man would ever want again, but also a woman who could defend herself. Medusa was forced to leave and later hunted down by Perseus under the orders of Athena. She tried to protect herself and her unborn children and was killed for it. Not everyone (even then) thought she was evil. In Ancient Greece shelters were built for women who had been raped and abused, the face of Medusa hung over the doors and no man could enter.

^ I was worried about Percy also, but after TLO I felt better about his future. Spoiler* after Percy was given the chance to make a request to become immortal, he turned it down and asked instead for the equal recognition of demigods of lesser gods. After that, I had a bit more hope for who he would turn out to be. He seems more humble and less destructive than the other demigods, also proven with the love and care he gives to his Hellhound dog, a monster that would typically be destroyed without a second thought.

+Beatrice Neniute She was raped by Poseidon.. She was not consent and it happend at Athena's Temple, since Medusa was her follower, she had to be a maid with virginity. Poseidon raped her, but Athena didnt "punish" her exactly. Athena knew it was Poseidon at fault, but being a god, too, she couldnt punish him. And so she made Medusa into a monster, so she could defend herself from men. There were even shelters for raped victims in Greece, with Medusa's head above the doors, meaning that men were forbidden from entering.

it's a very sad myth Medusa did nothing wrong she was raped by Poseidon in Athena's temple and then she gets cursed as if its her own fault and she's hunted won in her won home by Perseus who was sent by Athena and he had all sorts of toys to get the job done and this is just before she gives birth to twins! Raped, cursed and hunted down in her own home and her head and her children were sacrificed to the Goddess who cursed her and She's supposed to be the Monster ?! she was raped and cursed as of it were her fault and they call her the Monster ?! she was innocent!

But remember that Athena is jealous and quick to anger. Medusa was extremely attractive and the only one of the Gorgon sisters that looked even remotely human. Add that to it and it makes more sense when you look at it from Athena's side. Do you remember that Athena turned some chick into a giant spider because her weaving skills were the shit and her tapestries showed all the faults of the gods and such?

Athena's turning girls cuter than her into monsters, Zeus is raping every princess that looks at him funny and a couple of princes, Apollo's striking people blind, Artemis is turning men into deer to feed their dogs...and yet Hades gets all the villainous roles?
Seriously, what has the dude done (apart from abducting and marrying his niece- but on the bright side, if there is such a thing in forced marriage, he at least waited for her consent to marry) ?
So he won't give a musician his dead wife back! Sure he's got a three-headed dog and a river that can either burn to ashes or make you invincible and a bunch of Titan junking up his basement, but he is by far the most decent god.
You'd never catch Hades turning people into monsters as punishment. He probably thinks snakes for hair is a valid form of beauty.

Yes in the original story Medusa was raped by Poseidon because of her great beauty. Athena may have been mad but not at the young priestess, she granted her the power to turn any man that looked at her to become stone. Men only. Yes she lead a secluded life but it would have been similar to the life she lead as a priestess. Women would decorate safe places with her likeness to help battered or abused women find a shelter from their husbands.
However with a lot of mythology, the story changed. This is one version of events.

The origin of Medusa really does highlight one of the major themes of Greek mythology; that the Gods are above repercussion. In this story; Poseidon rapes Medusa in Athena's temple. Had he been mortal, Athena would certainly have brought her divine wrath down on him, but he was a god, and so immune to punishment. So she vents on Medusa instead. The same thing happens again and again. In one story Aphrodite commits adultery with Ares, and when caught the two get a little public humiliation and a stern talking to, but other than that get off scott free. In the same myths, the adultery of Helen and Paris resulted in the Trojan War, which killed countless thousands. Again and again the myths show that the gods are above and beyond mortals, and can get away with the kinds of things that get regular humans cursed or killed.

    • @typhoonhurricane18
      @typhoonhurricane18 8 років тому +5

Tartarus was like hell, yes, but was reserved almost exclusively for those who had in any way offended the gods. The Titans were locked there after their defeat in the war with the gods, but some humans were also placed in there for hubris or insulting the gods such as Sisyphus and Tantalus.

close red bell, the one I've run into the most (for there are many versions) is Arachne was so prideful and boastful that when a villager buying her silk commented that her work could rival a god Archne said she could out weave Athana herself, but Was overheard by the Goddess and challenged to a weaving contest in which she lost, but due to the scorn and haughtiness that Arachne showed before the contest that angered her and the skill at which Arachne showed made Athena jealous that someone without her blood could be so skilled and in spite turned Arachne into a spider so the only thing she would be appreciated for was her weaving but fear everything else about her.

The only reason people see him as bad is because Christian religion has mixed up the underworld as hell ( it's not ) therefore he is seen as the devil ( again he's not ). So people say he's the bad one when all the other gods are being complete jackasses! I mean he even gave one dude the chance to get his girlfriend back from the under world. And we call him bad!? Both his brothers have raped killed and tortured people for know good reason, I'm not saying hades hasn't done anything bad but he usually has a good reason.

Lmf Ao Hades kidnapped Persephone, her mother Demeter was led by Hecate to find her. The reason Hades gave her back was because while here daughter was missing Demeter made the world ice and snow, but before he gave Persephone back Hades fed her 6 pomegranate seeds causing her to live with him for 6 months then with her mother for 6 months. Hence the seasons changing.
Now besides that Hades never messed with mortals to my knowledge, always thought of just punishments. In all the gods in the Greek and Roman pantheon were at times vain, passionate and fairly dysfunctional, but if you view it from another way, they also did great good. Though Zeus has many stories of him being wild he also fought for his family, if you follow the myths and legends. All in all Hades was I would say the most balanced of his family.

an interesting re-imaging to this story of medusa. Suffice it to say she lost her beauty when she became a gorgon, being so hideous that no one could look upon her without death. This version has her keep that quality, which is very interesting. But really the most tragic part of medusa is her origins. Raped by a god then punished for it by another goddess. No divine justice, only an eternal punishment. It paints a dark picture, as to the gods humans are mere playthings, entertainment pieces to be used to ease the dull boring passage of time of the immortal gods.

Zeus was basically the unofficial god of sexual debauchery, considering he gave one woman a "golden shower", transformed into a swan to seduce a woman (because that totally makes sense), and raped his own sister hera AND JUSTIFIED IT BY MARRYING HER. Let's not forget that all the greek gods are siblings/related so yay incest.

she was an innocent woman before she turned into a "medusa"...see..this is why I love badguys more, they know how it truly feels like to be labeled as a monster, a villain but still some part of them want to do good to other people, it's just that things and other idiots never gave them a chance. Medusa here just wanted to feel love, is that too much to ask? In any story, myth, legend or real life, it's always the heroes who get the credits. It's not like I want to become a badguy, but, seriously, some bad guys just wanted to live a normal life, deep down inside, they're good people who were misunderstood which is why they turned bad because they're too tired of convincing people that they're good. They're much more easier to understand and relatable to everyday lives, especially my life. Not all villains are bad.

Michael S. Because in true mythology, Medusa was a priestess (a very beautiful one) who caught Posiedon's eye and they made love in the temple of Athena, Athena took this as an act of scorn and disrespect and because she couldn't punish the god Posiedon, she punished the mortal Medusa by making her so hideous that anyone who dared look upon her face was turned to stone.

Walking through the darkness of the cave, she past statues frozen in fear and hatred, stooping in front of one. A man. She took his hand and remembered what happened that sorrowful day.
Admiring a monument to Athena, she gazed into his eyes and kissed him, softly. Athena became enraged and a flash of light blinded them.
She opened her eyes and looked at the man, sighing and walking down a hallway to a mirror. She looked into it for a moment before wiping away her fantasy, reveling her yellow snake eyes and green skin, her scaly lips
Her eyes weld up, a tear falling down to the floor, turning to stone before breaking against the ground. The snakes upon her head writhed and snapped as she looked at her reflection. she placed her face into her hands as she softly sang a lulaby that rang into the darkness
    "Shadows shape the walls
    Pain contempt my call
my heart grieves for one and only."
    "Dark eyes glare at me
    (Can't understand)
My soul is so faint and lonely..."

The real story is that Medusa what very beautiful and vain and compared herself to the beauty of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. To punish Medusa, Athena made her hideous with snake hair, bronze skin and teeth, wings, and the teeth were deathly sharp. Also,(the well known bit) she could turn anyone to stone with her gaze.

One of my students connected this to Carol Ann Duffy's poem, "Medusa", included below:
    A suspicion, a doubt, a jealousy
    grew in my mind,
which turned the hairs on my head to filthy snakes
    as though my thoughts
hissed and spat on my scalp.
    My bride’s breath soured, stank
in the grey bags of my lungs.
I’m foul mouthed now, foul tongued,
    yellow fanged.
There are bullet tears in my eyes.
    Are you terrified?
    Be terrified.
    It’s you I love,
    perfect man, Greek God, my own;
but I know you’ll go, betray me, stray
    from home.
So better by for me if you were stone.
I glanced at a buzzing bee,
    a dull grey pebbly fell
    to the ground.
I glanced at a singing bird,
    a handful of dusty gravel
    spattered down
I looked at a ginger cat,
    a housebrick
    shattered a bowl of milk.
I looked at a snuffling pig,
    a boulder rolled
    in a heap of shit.
    I stared in the mirror.
    Love gone bad
    showed me a Gorgon.
    I stared at a dragon.
    Fire spewed
from the mouth of a mountain.
    And here you come
with a shield for a heart
and a sword for a tongue
    and your girls, your girls.
    Wasn’t I beautiful
    Wasn’t I fragrant and young?
    Look at me now.

You know. There is another version of this. That Medusa never turned into a gorgon, that was just made up from the humans who started to fear her. Actually she was still beautiful even if her hair had turned into snakes, so men sought her out but every time she looked at them they were turned into stone, so people started to fear her. The rumours spread and eventually she got known as a gorgon and men started to hunt her, and that led to her death. But this is just one of many theory's. :)

The story was this, Medusa was a very attractive mortal woman. A lot of men loved her and women envied her. She was NOT selfish nor conceited. She thanked the gods everyday for blessing her with such beauty, but never was in vain. Poseidon was very obsessed with Medusa, but since she was only a mere mortal...he could not be seen with such, and therefore decided he was going to have his way with her, in secret. Medusa did NOT like him back, and often turned him down. he grew angry that she wouldn't take up his offer, after all he WAS A GOD. Medusa was visiting Athena's temple, (for she was a young priestess... among many other young women) and she happened to be alone. Poseidon took the opportunity to make one more move on her and when she grew angry, he forced her into having sex with him. Athena was mad because her temple was of virginity and purity, and instead of blaming him, he blamed her. She said she should have protected herself...but if she did she was be locked up for hurting a god. (Much like todays society were we STILL blame rape victims...smh) so Athena cursed Medusa into a gorgon, so no man would ever be able to look at her again. Nonetheless, even other women. so was isolated and called ugly, treated like a monster. it was a sad life for medusa. I feel every bit of hatred for Poseidon and Athena for ruining such a nice persons life. Medusa, If you were ever real...I am very sorry. She didn't deserve the curse, nor did she deserve to be blamed for being raped.

The story of Medusa has been told and retold so many times but from what I can figure, Medusa was a beautiful priestess that caught Poseidon's interest. Poseidon raped her in Athena's temple and Athena got pissed off at this act of scorn, obviously she couldn't do anything to Poseidon so she let her anger out on Medusa by turning her into something so hideous, that anyone who looked upon her face would be turned to stone. It's tragedy truly. But a something I don't get is why Athena was so mad, because Cassandra was raped at Athena's temple by Ajax and y'know what happened to him? He got what was coming to him. Also what song is that? It's so sad and beautiful.

    • @oceanberserker

Because, in her twisted view of justice, Athena sought SOMEONE to punish for the violation of her temple. And seeing as it couldn't go after Poseidon, she opted for Medusa instead. Never mind the fact she could've petitioned her own father, Zeus, for justice against him and might've actually got it considering that Athena was a favorite child of Zeus.

I always thought that Medusa, even though she was supposed to be evil and stuff, I always thought she was cool. I've even designed a couple of my own Gorgon OC's.

the real story goes like this: Medusa always boasted about how pretty she ways every day to everybody, one day her and her friends went to Athena's temple and Medusa said that the temple should be her temple not Athena. Athena cursed her and turn her into a Gorgon, Medusa wanted to get revenge on the towns people. That is the real story

Then how do you explain her two sisters? also Gorgons which are in the oldest sources. Medusa's monstrous because she's the daughter of Titans. The fair-maiden Medusa doesn't appear until Ovid or thereabouts. The later versions are better, I'll admit.

MagnificentFiend supposedly they were children of monsters and humans, also cursed by athena or born that way

The way I heard it was that she got raped by Poseidon in Athena's temple and that was why Athena crused her into a Gorgon. I think the one I heard was that he wanted her, but she did not want him as she was a priestess of Athena and should be with no man, so he raped her.
Which really makes her a sad characters. The sisters was turned to our of spite, the gods always seemed to like doing this. But I am not sure, since Athena never did strike me as such a goddess to do these things, being the goddess of wisdom and all.

This was a beautiful piece. I remember the story of Medusa from Baedecker's Mythology as a kid.
One thing that always struck me was how the gods in Greek and Norse Mythology exemplified the best and more often than not also the very worst of human characteristics. from Zeus being basically a rapist and his wife Hera
(goddess of the hearth and home, quite a bit of irony there) destroying his innocent victims out of pure jealousy,
to a trickster like Loki who was the god of mischief and would bring misery to everyone he came across and would turn against the other gods and even kill one of them (Balder) out of pure jealousy.

isn't Hera the goddess of marriage and childbirth and Hestia is the goddess of the hearth ?
And whats your favourite myths? (I prefer Greek myths)

Bohdana Panchyshyn Yes you're quite right, I really should have googled Hera's name, It's been forever since I've read Greek Mythology. Still a nice bit of irony there IMHO being the Goddess of marriage and having such an unfaithful husband. as Zeus.
As to my favorite myths, Probably it's a tie between Greek and Norse myths, although I may like Norse mythology a little more just because of the way the gods were portrayed as being so flawed and having at the same time aspirations like Odin sacrificing his eye to gain knowledge and humorous bits like Thor having to disguise himself as a veiled woman to get his hammer back (with Loki's help) after it had been stolen. Plus things like Loki's completely inhuman daughter being Hel the goddess of death. (half woman and half corpse) and Loki being so insanely bitter as to murder another god in a fit of jealousy (Baldur) leading to his imprisonment and battling the gods leading up to Ragnarok (The Twilight of the Gods)
Norse Mythology for me just seemed more complex and interesting in it's characterizations and the motivations of these same gods and characters for me as a kid compared to Greek Mythology which for me seemed to focus more on heroes and the nobility of the gods and just not on them as individuals all that much.
Plus I grew up on Wagner's Ring Operas and Stan Lee & Jack Kirby's Thor comics as a kid so I guess I'm more of a Norse myth guy.
Sorry for that mile long answer to your question. LOL :-)

+cha5 that's cool, so far all I know about Norse mythology is from Magnus Chase and the God's of Asgard, so I am really looking into any great books that can explain the myths more. Any suggestions will be really apreiciated.
I used to watch the Class of the Titans in teletoon so I ended up reading PJO and HOO by Rick Riordan and now because of Merlin ( BBC show ) I am now trying to read more about Arturian mythology. Mythology is just really awesome in general, even thought it seems like just fairytale ( the older versions) and legends from another era but like fairytale they are really gruesome and say a lot about humanity.
