Its weird how different log houses in North America are compared to Finland. Thats actually so cool that u guys use complicated joins and stuff like that to form shapes in the frame. We just stack them on top of each other and cut the triangle shape to the wall for the roof 😯
We also do that if you aren't rich af lol
Thats pretty standard for a cabin. You dont need much if its a weekend trip but for some of those bigger houses this is what they do. They are by no means common
These are designer houses for rich people who probably don't even live there full time. Form over functionality. I'd take Finnish house without a question
They're doing the same thing but they just showed the complicated parts for the video. Because of the size of the house, the trusses need a bottom member to avoid the roof caving in and pushing the wall outward from the weight of the timbers and potential snow
Actually, historically Americans built log houses the exact same way that they did in Finland.
This is because half of the Swedish colony in what today is Delaware were Finns.
And those Finns introduced the log house to America.
The Title should be "When Money is No Object to build Your Cabin in the Woods" lol!! Just the wood alone is millions of dollars!! These guys are artists though I'll give them that!!

log cabins for hundreds of years have never been assembled twice, this is called being able to scale your production
Been building houses for roughly 25yrs, would love to get in on building something like this just for the experience. Great looking build guys
I want to learn how to but not sure where to start
I have a question. How long do these log cabins last? Would you need to replace log by log with time?
@@mitchkim6763logs require alot of maintenance, more so than a standard stick build for the exact reason you mentioned.
@@hellfiregamez5968go towards the sunset, turns right at the Rockies. I'm planning on spending next summer in Colorado working. I'm in the Texas Hill Country and I've met a couple of guys that worked like this. Very remote, unfriendly workers and customers, so they say
@mitchkim6763 I've worked on repairing several log cabins in eastern NC. I've found they don't last unless you properly upkeep them, and no one with a log cabin really does that. They tend to be secondary homes or owned by those without the energy or means for upkeep.
Replacing or patching rotten logs is a nightmare. You have to build a false wall inside the home and make your cuts with a chainsaw. We never did find a good way to do the corners properly. It's built from the bottom up instead of traditional contruction which has a lot more horizontal progression.

Awesome workmanship. Such a long long process. Great to know a group of dedicated people with such stills are still around. Best to you!
This guy builds one house every 3 yrs cuz it cost 5 million in labor to build it. Think about it. All the wood cost are pretty cheap.
God bless men for all the work to put roofs over our heads
I've helped build log homes and did repair/maintenance work to the logs over the years. I can tell you from experience that homes made with a wood exterior are terrible. The sun destroys even the strongest wood stain/sealer within 5-7 years and the process to reapply stain requires a LOOT of manual labor. People often build wrap around porches to protect the walls in shade. That works well but you still have all kinds of insects CONSTANTLY trying to eat or drill holes into the walls. Woodpeckers also destroy it. After decades of building both log homes, traditional stick frames, metal buildings, ect, I can say confidently I would never build a log home for myself....They're just too weak. They don't last and require a lot of maintenance. Not to mention they're expensive.
What construction would you recommend people build/buy? I’m not a fan of modern stick frames but don’t know a better alternative
You prefer particle board or press board then?

I live in Alberta & my grandparents used to live in a log house. It overlooked a huge valley with a small river at the bottom and they had their own personal bridge you could fish off of that you had to drive across because it led up to their driveway. It also had a large bay window so you could look over the valley, it was all incredibly beautiful no matter the time of year or weather. Especially during Christmas when 2-3ft of newly fallen glittering white snow blanketed everything and they had their lit up Christmas tree with all of its presents set up in front of the window. Fond memories. ❤

My grandad built a log home from the pines on his property back in the 60s with a couple local kids.
My grandparents passed a couple years back, and the house was sold. I’m sure they’ll tear it down. Sad to think about.
No way thats horrible. Did no one inherit it?
Wonder if it’s possible to move it instead of tearing it down. Sometimes people will list them for sale for next to nothing as long as the buyer pays for it to be relocated.

The great thing about cedar is that if you let it grow old enough and let it fully dry out it becomes nearly impervious to water seepage, its almost as good and sometimes - depending on the quality - better than pressure treated boards.

Got quite a few log houses in my area. One of my favorite memories is me and my buddy visiting some friends up in the mountains about an hour from home on Christmas eve.
