I performed K1m in my youth end of the 60ties, short before it get Olympic discipline in Augsburg. I started for the German youth Championship on the old Eiskanal 1970 when in the lower part the Bulldozers were grabbing the new chanel. long ago and end with racing due to school and job education in 71.
The boots were different minimum 4 m long instead of 3,5 and with bigger volume according knowlege of that time. The gates had red pins left and green pins right, like ships lighting. Upstream gates got an A (In German aufwärts) mark beside the number and ther were gates on the course minimum one with an R at the number for reward passing. It was not allowed to undercut the gate with the boat front part, officially alss with the rear but this rule was difficult to observe and was as i remember at the end of the 60ties not penalted unless you did not hit the pin with the boat, like today. The penalty was 10 sec. for contact of a pin from inside per pin, so if you touch both red and green you got 20 seconds. If you touch from outside you got 50 sec. If you miss a gate 100 sec. When you look on the competion until the beginning 90ties the paddelind of the paddlers looks not so dynamic like today, because of the rules and the safety to prevent penalties with the longer boats and the risk of front undercut enter a gate

A couple friends tagged a gold medal in the '92 Olympics in C2, Joe Jacobi / Scott Strausbaugh. Their boat has been hanging in the Natahala Outdoor Center restaurant for a few years. It's a shame that most people working there don't have a clue of the history of the boat especially since they are hometown guys. I'm a big fan of the C2 class, it's a shame it's been dropped.

I have no clue why the USCOC didn't ADD C-2 W and C2 Mixed in addition to the existingC-2 Mens class as well as adding C-1W when they did. The Host country spent millions of dollars to build the artificial river, so why not get more use out of it getting more athletes involved, more ticket and vendor revenue and more exposure for the sport on TV. Maybe it goes back to 1981 when the ICF had a C-2 Mixed class in Bala Wales' World championships and the US team swept all three medals. The Euros didn't like that and the class vanished quickly. There certainly should be equal classes for guys and gals as is the current program, but what a ruckus it would bring if the Flatwater sprint competition was reduced to 4 classes and only 1 race length

@@maxwellhouse1902 Max! Hope you are doing well. Looking back, I think we competed in the peak of local slalom racing.

Surprisingly, my (and I'll call her manager to keep it simple) manager from work, is related to Lena Teunissen, a Dutch Olympic level K1W athlete. She even moved to Germany to train as she wanted to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olymics.....
Iirc she actually secured an additional oylmpic ticket for the Netherlands, but ultimately failed her qualifications causing someone else to be selected. Though I don't know if the delays have changed any of this.

I have run a "course" once, but only in a whitewater boat! Havn't had the chance to paddle a real slalom boat. Would love to though!
