I have never understood how anyone can leave a brush in a container of water! I learned at age 10 when my Gran taught me the basics of watercolor painting, you dip your brush. I do enjoy watching your videos and most times agreeing with your insights. I hope you and your family are doing well, staying safe and finding joy in your art. Be well and I will see you next video!
Thanks for the video, I did go and read the book you reccomended "The War of Art", I need to overcome the "resistance" of just starting and painting. Again a big Thanks!
Hope it was helpful. I found the advice in the book to be almost a "well, why didn't I think of that?" but I think that's the point. We get so in our heads some times.
I'm a portrait painter for over 35 years. Jerry's has been my go-to for the last 20 years of that or more. I'm losing my sight, and procrastinating for fear of failing. Painting is my entire world; but you're the right. I need to just do it! I have WAAAAAAAY over 10k hours of practice. I need to believe in myself. Thanks for the reminder!
Thanks for the JUST DO IT message. I'm an author new to watercolor and that's the kind of inspiration I need for both. So thank you. Write first, then paint. (smile)
Another wonderful video Mike mate, I love your videos and the information you provide is priceless. Hope you, your family and all at Jerrys are keeping safe and well.
Harry, great to hear from you! Thank you so much, and I've been checking out your videos from time to time as well on your channel. Wishing you and your family the same.
Enjoyed your video. I'm not aspiring to be a fine art person, but do enjoy mixed media art journaling. Your list of bad habits, for the most part, are across the board for fine art to random crafting/art.
I don't totally agree on the don't use cheap supplies thing. I buy dollar store newsprint pads and sketchbooks because they are cheap, and I use them for studies where I want to work things out before using good paper and doing a finished piece. I also use Crayola Educational watercolors (not the washable things, they will drive you mad) and fairly inexpensive wc paper to work out color schemes and sometimes technique before starting a final piece, as well. No, they are not colorfast, acid free, etc. I don't expect them to be and don't usually keep the results past doing the final piece.
This is awesome! Thank you! The only amendment I might make is the "don't compare yourself". I think moderation is key here. Comparison is a natural human trait. How do we measure our art if we don't have good art to COMPARE to? Or better yet, ASPIRE to. By default we see these masterpieces and say, I want to make art that way. And then the only way to improve is to work towards it, by comparing your techniques and improving them to become more like the masters. There is a difference between critiquing and poor self talk, but comparing is needed for improvement. I say this as an educator. If my students don't know what fluency sounds like in Spanish, or they don't know what they should aim for, and don't have a goal, they don't have direction. As a beginner artist, I am always comparing my work to the pros because that's my aspiration. To become like them. To become a master of my craft. Isn't that how many of the master artists got better too? Through apprenticeships to improve their own art? I could be way wrong here, but i thought I heard that somewhere. Anyway, that's my stupid rant on comparing lol. I LOVE you're videos. You make art accessible and fun! I subscribed today because I just love how endearing this whole channel is and how dedicated the team is to the love of art! Thank you for all you are doing!
i missed you. Not romantically or on a creepy way. I missed you artistically. I just love watching and listening to you. You have a great sens of humour and always good advises, Mike-not-Jerry. And you look like my nephew. He's an handsome young man.
I would have saved so much money if I had just gone fir the good supplies first. But I had no guidance. Just started with what was easily available locally. A stab in the dark as it were. Then when I found out about supplies and where to get them I thought I was not worthy of them. Absolutely great advice Mike.🤩
I started out with basic supplies, discovered a higher level of quality materials, little by little. I like the resukts much better. I have favorite brushes now. Not all from the same manufacturer, but still. Favorites.
Thanks for this, Mike. I am guilty as sin of procrastination and leaving brushes in water and losing their use, and I never understood before what went wrong in as little as an hour. And while it's been a while since I painted last, I'm pretty sure I used too much acrylic on my palette. And I dislike what waste does to the environment and bottom line. Thanks so much for explaining it. Won't happen again.
If I could paint 27/7 I would i love it so much, my husband actually gets mad at me. But you are right, you need to walk away when necessary. Now that is an artists problem for me :( I manage it 😂 I have bought a lot from Jerry’s - good products & customer service. Loving the videos
I think everyone has own difference honest opinions what is bad art and what is good art i also think there is not right or wrong way to do art some just want to do art just for fun and some don't that's just my difference point of view perception
Some people have to learn not to leave their brushes soaking the hard way, I try to warn friends when I see them doing it. I die a little inside anytime I watch someone whose letting them sit.
My first year of art school and the prof criticized my watercolors in front of the class as being "too pretty" which mentally caused me to slam the door shut on producing work joyfully. It has cast a shadow over doing work for myself ever since - and it has been decades. "Not good enough" has been my partner in art.
I really hate that kind of teacher, they think you're there to please them. An art teacher shoul teach you how to use the different mediums and how to get inspired, that's all. You aren't there to please them. If she/he/ said that your watercolours were "too pretty" that means that they were too good for that teacher. To me, It sounds like jealousy.
Every artist has their preference in what looks good. That prof clearly didn't like "pretty art". In my opinion, art should make you feel good, make you feel happy. I had a teacher who constantly put down students; why go through that? I found encouraging teachers who have helped me progress in my art. Forget that narrow-minded prof. Do what makes you happy. If you like what you're painting, it'll reflect on the canvas.
Hahah. I've been leaving my brushes in water all my life! haha I buy cheap brushes so I can, and, if the brush separates from the shaft. I glue it back together. Once in a while I'll clean my brushes. But my main brushes are those cheap 3" wide brushes house painters use. LOL...They're not cheap anymore.
@@MikeNotJerry I've reached the point in my art journey where failures don't bother me anymore. Instead of a failure it's a learning experience that frees me up to try new things, because I've already "ruined" the painting, right, so at that point anything goes and it's fun!
Here's a bit of lyrics from a Styx song for you: You're kidding yourself if you don't believe it Get up, get back on your feet You're the one they can't beat and you know it Come on, let's see what you've got Just take your best shot ... If you know the song, singing it can really motivate you. It did me.
Just FYI, the 10,000 hour thing is pop psychology BS. There is no real research into the subject confirming this. There are multiple variables that determine mastery in each subject, study, or profession, and this number is arbitrary at best. 🤷♀️🤦♀️🙄
It's a very good point. You are right. We live in a three dimensional world and there are many factors and variables. I think the 10,000 hours thing catches on because it's a simple concept to grasp, and if you do keep at it, you WILL improve.
I hook silicone makeup brush holders to a pegboard and use them to snugly hang brushes upside-down to dry. Cheap and super effective.
Awesome tip!

Same. Noticed it was Artist Loft stuff which I've never had issues with and lots of them are surprisingly made in America.

Keep going. You can do it!
Ill admit, i am always leaving/forgetting , my paint brushes in dirty water… to the point where the handles chip.

Absolutely. Art is so subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Please make a video about color pencils!! They are a great medium and many people think they are childish 🙄

I am assuming Jerry’s will be at Creativation???? Do you know the booth # yet??
I am not sure about that. I'll have to see what marketing is planning. I know that we attend Namta, but we don't usually present with a booth.
always crack me up
That is one of the greatest compliments I can hear. Thanks J Marie!
I’ve got in 6,400 hours in. Thats six thousand four hundred hours!! I’m getting there!
