People forget-he has a record which can never be beaten. He is a part of history-our 1st Winter Olympics Gold Medallist. The 'Miracle on Ice'. Well done mate.
Truth is that if you look at the pace Bradbury was matching it. He won fair and square and he's a bloody nice bloke to boot. Well done. And there is nothing wrong with Doing a Bradbury.
What needs to be remembered is that Stephen Bradbury went through the heats and semi-finals to get to the final of the event. So he was already in the top five in the world when this race started. Not just some lucky blow-in.
But remember in every one of those races incidents occurred that favored Stevens advancement. He only went to these Olympics to try and sell a new racing blade he came up with. There is an old saying you have to be in it to win it. And as the last man standing he got the exact medal he deserved.
@@glenchapman3899 so he didn't qualify he just went to promote a product? Troll much. He played the rink. It's called skill. He took a chance. Four-time Olympian. Got a response?
@@heartshapedisle Well you need to take that up with him. Because he is the one who mentioned it. He and a partner had developed some new blade and were just getting the business of the ground. At this stage of his career Bradbury knew he did not have a realistic chance of even getting out of the quarter finals. He was definitely not the same skater we all saw in 94 and 98 by this stage in his career.
And don’t forget he won the semi in the same way (or maybe it was the quarters, i forget) by the blokes ahead of him all wiping out. But he worked bloody hard and sacrificed a lot for a lot of years to put himself into a position to get lucky!
People dont realize how lucky he was to even be in the race. In the semi final and the quarter final he only made the next round due to disqualifications. In the second heat a competitor fell to allow him to progress. The stars aligned, the universe gave the nod and Steven Bradbury achieved immortality.
To make a comparison, in car racing, the aim is to get the maximum performance out of the car without going off the track. This means pushing to the very limits of the cars cornering abilities without leaving the track or colliding with other cars. - If a driver can do all this consistently, and manage to win in perhaps a slower car, he/she is considered to be an outstanding driver. Same goes for horse racing. Bradbury skated a tactical race, wisely stayed out of trouble and earned his gold medal.
"So I went in with the plan to sit at the back and hope there was a lot of collisions .." haha classic, in the words of George Peppard, I love it when a plan comes together
In sweltering sticky Aussie heat we were all watching as they went down like bowling pins while Steven coasted on through. We said to hell with the habitual summer rule of no human contact after 07:00 and slapped our sweaty bodies together cheering like a hungry family of seals! What a memory! 😂
As Aussies we all know that times like this should not be forgotten, and as a nation we need to bring times like this back. Forget the recent bullshit and stir up the good vibes again. We can do it. 🤜🏽💥🤛🏽🇦🇺
For some reason Roy and H G have been coming up in my recommendations lately. Remember when Bradbury won and everyone was going on about how Australian it was for him to win like that. Had a great laugh watching this bit of Australian gold. Thank you for posting it all those years ago.
Kippers said it best: ... If you can keep your feet when all about you are losing theirs you will be a Winter Olympic short track speed skating gold medallist. And-which is more-you'll do ads for Nutri Grain!
I notice in any other race held in the world, if the favourite goes down and kisses the dirt, there is no problem. Also the other blokes had already fallen in the prelims, so who is the fool? I salute you Mr Bradbury.
Absolutely right! - In car racing, the aim is to get the maximum performance out of your car without colliding with other drivers or going off the track. - That means going hard and fast into corners to the maximum adhesion levels you can get from the tyres and chassis. If you can do that - in perhaps a slightly slower car, and win, when faster cars spin off, then you are considered to be an outstanding driver. Bradbury skated a smart, tactical race, and his training, wisdom an patience paid off.
This so Australian i almost can't stand it. I saw comedian RICH HALL in Sydney right after this happened and he just shouted on stage at the opera house, " THAT GUY HAD NEVER ICE SKATED IN HIS LIFE BEFORE HE WON GOLD". HE JUST SNUCK IN, PUT ON SOME SKATES AND FAKED IT. But in the top 10 for 12 years and then suddenly... just before retiring? What a legend. Congrats Steven!
Yep and one year was almost favourite to win but had an accident in training where his leg was sliced open by a skate. He has said since that this win was a reward of a lifetime of training hard and being in contention but having bad luck throughout his career, so had no problem getting gold in this way. Nor should he!
I know this is more than a decade later ,but I can’t help but love how doing this would have felt. Feeling the love and admiration he would have felt there would have been one of the greatest moments in his life.
Sceptics of Steve Bradbury should listen to the ABC's Conversations podcast with Steve and hear his entire life history. If I recall correctly he beat most of these skators when they were all in their youth and only a life threatening skating accident (cut the major in his leg, almost bleed out) stopped his momentum to be a continuously winning class skator...well worth a listen.
Not only was Steve Bradbury the first ever Australian athlete to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympic Games, we was also responsible for the creation of a new idiom or phrase; "Doing a Bradbury".
They were putting shit on him right up until he won the gold. He also dived into rough surf to save 2 people a little while back. The bloke is a deadset legend.
First time I've seen him talk He's rather humble and recognized his luck lined up at the right time Also, the fact that he's been in the top ranks for many years means he's still bloody good, just not at the very top like the others It's still a great results and his attitude is first class, not boasting, not telling people he knew he could be the best, just the truth that things all lined up at the right time and he won
The moral of the story is: If you want to pull off a 'Bradbury,' follow the four dates in front of you for the whole race - but not so close that you end up polishing the floor with your own date - along with the pack..........😊
It must have been a very long 18 years for Roy and HG, between 1973 and 1991, when New Zealand won more Olympic gold medals than Australia. And that includes Moscow 1980, where NZ didn't even send a team. Australia had a chance to clean up in the swimming, as USA were absent as well, but failed.
People forget-he has a record which can never be beaten.
He is a part of history-our 1st Winter Olympics Gold Medallist.
The 'Miracle on Ice'. Well done mate.
This was unbelievably wonderful… and a good example of working bloody hard for years to put yourself in a position to get bloody lucky.
Roy and HG deserve a gold medal. They were the best part of the Olympics.
Truth is that if you look at the pace Bradbury was matching it. He won fair and square and he's a bloody nice bloke to boot. Well done. And there is nothing wrong with Doing a Bradbury.
He's done a Bradbury, is part of my vocabulary. What an awesome moment that was!

Strategic brilliance.
The voices of sanity 😳🙂💖🎏✊🏽🦦

Need to be a movie made about this. It's been 20 years.
This was 15 years ago.... Feels like yesterday! A champagne moment in Australian sport!
20 years now)
yet he was so humble about the gold. He kept his sportsmanship.
'Doing a Bradbury'. Forever in Australian language.
Had a Barry Crocker, as full as a primary school hat rack. Doing a Bradbury 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

what a golden time in sporting history for Australia
In sweltering sticky Aussie heat we were all watching as they went down like bowling pins while Steven coasted on through. We said to hell with the habitual summer rule of no human contact after 07:00 and slapped our sweaty bodies together cheering like a hungry family of seals! What a memory! 😂
Bradbury’s face should be on Australian currency!
Yes!! Start a petition, I’m there.
Should be on the one dollar coin it's fitting
As Aussies we all know that times like this should not be forgotten, and as a nation we need to bring times like this back. Forget the recent bullshit and stir up the good vibes again.

Skating through life like Steven Bradbury 👌🏽⛸

So proud it's lifted the table 😂

had the pleasure of seeing Roy and HG doing a live broadcast, many years ago in Briz... and great stuff from Steven Bradbury...
That was the best sporting moment ever
Haha Classic Australian sporting moment. You gotta love it.
As a Kiwi Australian, might I say THANK YOU for these GLORIOUS mamarries.
I used to speed skate competitively and it really can come down to last person standing. It's f#&king hard. Well done Steve.!
Further back Steve, further back!

That's Australian gold my friend and don't you f@#kin forget it 🤣
I'll just keep that powder dry. Gosh I love their use of language.
They start away. Steven drops into the traditional Australian position in this event.
LMAO! You mean the last position.
Without question, the greatest Olympic moment in history!!!

ahah I love the way Bradbury deals with it!!
ive seen the guy in the city and hes a good bloke
Good to see him in ads for Sochi
The clip cracks me up every time I watch it ... love sharing the laughs with friends :)
I've seen him at the SCG
Sitten' down, going backwards... Gold!!
And this is how Brisbane won the hosting rights for the 2032 Olympics.
pretty much yes!
At primary school I would always be coming last in cross country I was always hoping to a Steven Bradbury
I feel Australia was a different place back then
It was and a lot more peaceful too
That call "watch out Snake!" Worked a treat to clear the field. Champion by default.
Actually he kept calling out"do up your boot laces".As effective as a fart when your opponent is playing a golf shot!Works every time.Strategy!!!
"it's all about the timing" : S Bradbury.
Kiwis. 'Perform best silting backwards'. Love it.
Loved these guys!

That last line sign out.... Beer through Nose !
I miss these guys
Australian GOLD alright! Glad you all enjoyed the clip! :)
Love it thanks for posting
THanks Baz that was gold!!!

Pure GOLD!!!

The greatest video on UA-cam.
i loved the ad after 5 seconds
The funniest thing on TV.., The Ice Dream..., loved it.
Totally legit strategy, hang back and wait for your opponents to completely f*ck everything up. What could be more Australian than that.
Exactly. He knew he would never have the speed. Just try and stay close enough if anything happens
I love these guys.🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍

Yes and Kama paid the bill
That's gold baby...GOLD!
To finish first, first you have to finish!
It's actually a common tactic in this particular sport.
Not only was Steve Bradbury the first ever Australian athlete to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympic Games, we was also responsible for the creation of a new idiom or phrase; "Doing a Bradbury".
They're right though if your not on your feet you can't win hahahahah! Thing is Australia would win another gold medal in that Winter Olympics.
The Bradster!
Yes, and don't New Zealanders perform at their their best when they're sittin' down goin' backwards. Classic.
They were putting shit on him right up until he won the gold. He also dived into rough surf to save 2 people a little while back. The bloke is a deadset legend.

Well stated. He took it all like a champion. Ya just couldn't have dreamt that outcome!
And "X did a Bradbury" is now part of the Australian lexicon.
분위기좋네요. 우리의 김동성선수와 안현수선수에게는 안타깝지만 스티븐에게 최선을 다한 결과인것 같아요. 축하합니다

Does anyone know if a video with the original Australian commentary on 7 is available?
If you ever find it, please let us know.
Loved it
They forgot the first rule ... stay on your feet
If you want to finish first, then first you have to finish
What never seems to come up anywhere with Bradbury is that he did the same thing in the semi final, he was at the back and two or three fell.
I won gold at Little Aths. It was only tin.
Lol
Next Olympics, put Aunty Cindy in a competition. Any one you like.
If Cindy is a world class athlete who can stay on her feet..bloody oath
Does anyone know where this video can be found somewhere else? Beside wanting to see it I want to know why it's been banned from TheirTube.
