    Sir your video of the PT Cruiser disassembly for the timing belt & water pump is top notch & excellent.
    I am 72 years old & was able to accomplish the PT Cruiser timing belt & water pump service thanks to your great video ! ! !
    This is the most difficult home auto repair I have done in the last 20 years & I really prefer working on my Dodge Ram far more than the PT Cruiser but my wife loves her PT Cruiser.
    Many, many thanks for such an informative video that guides the way through the PT Cruiser jungle.

    This is, without doubt, the most informative video that I have ever seen. I did the clutch on my stepson's Jetta a couple of weeks ago and didn't find any videos that were nearly as complete as this one. Now it's my daughter's turn for a repair! I downloaded the PT Cruiser service manual (easily found through a google search), and while it has all possible information to perform any repair, I found that it jumps from section to section as it describes how to do this job. Your video describes the work much better than the service manual. Thanks for putting this together and posting it. Well done.

      Many thanks for the feedback. I have seen that be the case in alot of service manuals. Sometimes you need to see what is being described....words and some black and white pics just dont do it justice. Thanks again for watching and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe Gregory.

      @@MotorCityMechanic As a follow-up, I found that it's possible to do this job without removing the A/C lines (at least on a 2005 PT, non-turbo with cruise control.) First, remove the upper lateral arm (you should be able to get a socket onto the bolts without removing the A/C lines.) Second, remove the bolts on the bracket that attach to the wheel/shock tower. This bracket has 2 pieces. If you remove the nuts on the back, the bracket sections will come apart and they can be removed past the A/C lines. Finally, I found that I had to remove the bolts holding the power steering reservoir and move it back out of the way. There isn't a lot of room to spare but I was able to complete the disassembly with the A/C lines in place. It would be much easier to remove the lines but being that the timing belt was broken, it couldn't be brought to a shop and I didn't want to bleed off the gas into the environment. Thanks again for the video.

    To the guy who made these videos, Thank You!! I am an old viet nam vet with bad shoulders and the timing belt broke on my cruiser. I could not afford to pay to have it repaired so I did it myself. Without your videos and guidance I would of never been able to do it. Two things I learned is that the engine can be jacked up really high to get to the bolts on the monster plate, and also to step away and cool off. You did me and others a great favor. God Bless.

      doorgunnerone Awesome! Glad it worked out and no problems. I rarely get the marks lined up correctly the first time and have done about 20-30 of these over the years. You did great and should be proud. I cant tell you how many shops wont touch this repair and how many mechanics I work with that run like little girls each time one comes into the shop. It took along time to make the video and from the response....I'm glad I did. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment about the video. Make sure to subscribe and help spread the word about these videos by sharing with others. I have many more PT cruiser videos so don't stop watching. Excellent series. I've installed one timing belt on another make (non transverse mount). I'm getting more experienced with more challenging tasks on my vehicles. I just purchased a 2005 Cruiser with unknown timing belt maintenance and the cruiser has 130k miles. I believe I can tackle this job now after viewing this series. THANKS for taking the time to produce these video series.

      GSNCLN thanks for watching my friend. I appreciate you taking the time to comment as well. It isn't an easy job by any means but it can be done. I keep forgetting from time to time that what's common/easy for me may be different for others. I would be scared as hell possibly if I had never touched a PT Cruiser before. Age had caught up with me so I cant remember my first timing belt job anymore. Make sure to subscribe when you get time and check us out on facebook and twitter. Once again another PT Chrysler condemned due to bad information. Hate to know that someone got rid of it for that reason because someone didn't understand the 2.4 and have the owner inaccurate info. I understand when the mechanic reads about it having the possibility of bending valves but they don't know that when the belt breaks it won't bend valves. Now if you install the belt wrong.....it can happen. Glad to see you weren't scared and welling to take the job on. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the update. My hat is off to you!

    First let me say this video is an excellent source of tips for the DYI mechanic. That being said, as you mentioned that DYI mechanic probably doesn't have an AC machine. And while you don't charge for the AC service while doing the job, in these parts its not free unless done during another operation. I just wanted to make the point that its not necessary to do the job. Thanks for great videos. I set new techs in front of them so I don't have to teach!

    Hi! I began working on my brother in laws PT Cruiser 2 weeks ago. Most difficult was the Harmonic Pulley. It was the pulley without any threaded holes in it. The puller I rented did the job, but not easy. This video was great! One thing I did not have to do was remove the A/C Line Freon. I just used a Bungee Cord and pulled it towards the frame. That did work. Of course that Bolt in the wheel hub was a pain. Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I am not a trained mechanic so this step by step video was HUGE HELP. Made all the difference in this job.

      +Merrill Sammis My hats off to you Merrill. Its a job that many run away from. Glad to see that it worked out great for you. On the balancer.....you will always need to use a 3 jaw style puller. I use to do it with out removing the Freon.....but being that I have an a/c machine handy......it just made is much easier for me. None the less....thanks for watching. The manual I bought was confusing. These videos saved me from a LOT of heartache and frustration. Other than the fact that they are such quality, detailed videos, I think the fact that they provided so much hope and encouragement along the way is what gave me the confidence to attempt such a difficult job.
    For me, not being a mechanic, every part was difficult; but it was made easy and stress free because of MotorCity Mechanic's pleasant, patient and clear presentation. His constant tips were real life savers. Several times I rewatched a video only to find that what I was struggling with was something that I missed that he actually commented on, though briefly. So pay attention to EVERY DETAIL. He is very thorough!
    Just make sure you replace all the hoses when you are done. I forgot to replace a vacuum hose at the back of the engine, and it was running sporadically. Fortunately, I knew it was a vacuum problem and not a timing problem! Otherwise.. I don't even want to think about that!!!
    Thanks a million, MotorCity Mechanic. God bless you for making these videos.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  7 років тому

      The great things about these videos is that you can watch them over and over so that you notice all the pointers. The bad things about manuals is that they skip alot of important steps. Plus they rarely include any real world issues you may come up with or short cuts to help save you some time. Many thanks for the awesome feedback and encouragement.

      MotorCity Mechanic Well I have to say that was a tough job! Very little space to work in. I elected not to open the A/C lines, but the thought crossed my mind more than once. Actually found the original tensioner was not applying any tension at all and appeared to be the cause for the car having a rough idle. Glad to report that the car is running Great now! Again, Thank you for the videos!

    • @MotorCityMechanic

      Jim Schweitzer Glad to hear it worked out. I have done it before without taking the a/c lines loose before but knowing now.......I take it loose everytime. It always gives me the little bit of extra room to help the job. That could be one reason why people hate to do this repair.....if they took the lines off they would find that it becomes much more easier. My hats off to you.....professionals run away from this job and you took it head on. Great Job.

    This has got to be the BEST DIY VIDEO on You Tube. I was undecided about buying this 2002 PT Cruiser for $600.00 until I saw your video and to know the 2.4L is a non interference motor pushed me over the fence to buy it. I've done VW motors (VR6, 1.8 and 2.0 that are interference) with broken belts and are expensive to replace. Thanks for putting together an outstanding video.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 років тому

      Have no doubt.....it is an interference engine, but........I have found that damage only gets done when some lines up the marks wrong and then tries to start the engine. Otherwise is basically reverts to a "sweet" spot when the belt breaks and becomes safe from damage. I haven't seen bent valves ad of yet and that's on engines that the belt broke at +70mph while driving. Let me know how it turns out and if the $600 was well spent lol. Might be the best $600 car you ever bought. Thanks for the kind words and taking the time to watch and comment. Make sure to subscribe

    Just Finished this job on my sons 06 limited 2.4 non turbo that he purchased not running for $300, the job consistsed of diagnosing the non run issue which wound up being a bunch of ground wires (like 12) being corroded off at the ground lugs on both front inner fenders, new wire lug ends and it starts right up.
    The water pump was leaking so it needed replaced and showing 96K miles and not knowing if it had been done i figured no better time than now.
    Parts I replaced were the timming belt, water pump, thermostat, all hoses, accessory belts , oil and filter, lower tourqe arm and new antifreeze and even had the radiator cleaned at the local radiator shop and recharged the A/C.
    The job was done in the garage with the car up on jack stands using a floor jack to rais and lower the engine, wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.
    Let me say THANK YOU for these videos they were a huge help, and it only took me 5 times the timming belt on correctly with all marks lined up after 2 rotations.
    Started and purred like a kitten.
    Again Thanks for the Videos 🤗👍👍

      @@MotorCityMechanic Thought you may like an update,
      After I started the enging to make sure it would run properly "before I completely reassembled everything including the grill and hood latch"
      after complete assembly I discovered a coolant leak as I'm filling the cooling system, wound up being a hole rusted through on the heater hose return nipple on the coolant inlet pipe facing the block right on the weld so it wasn't visible to the eye. I replaced the inlet pipe, all heater hose lines rubber and metal cause metal lines were rusted also, "didn't want to do it a third time" LOL
      Along with the parts mentioned above I also replaced the timming belt, idler and tensioner pulleys, water pump, thermostat, upper and lower radiator hoses, a/c and alt. belts, lower tourqe strut, had the radiator cleaned, new battery, new fuel pump, oil & filter change, air filter, New Anti Freeze, using all name brand replacement parts like Gates, AC Delco, Zerex, Baldwin, Stant, Pioneer and Dorman to name a few.
      I also traced down ground wire issues on ground wires located on inner fender wells and replaced the 4 main ground wire ends (with multiple wires attached) on both sides as they all showed signs of the dreaded green death corrosion. 😫😤😤🤬🤬🤬
      All In we have an 06 PT Crusier Touring Edition power everything with sun roof and mag racing wheels that is some sort of a Signature Series with 116,000 miles on it for a total of including purchase cost and tax just under $900 for a car that runs and drives great for what it is.

    You do a great job. It saved me literally. Without it I would of surely taken my torch, and burnt it to a charred pile of Chrysler to it Two things I wish would of explained more, or differently. #1 crankshaft pulley required not a three jaw puller but a harmonic balancer. I hope I don’t get it back together and see I have damage. I just got done changing the water pump. The rest reassembled tomorrow I pray. I pulled the crap out of it. Ok now #2 Dude you really should of told me with more Ihad jack motor up past what looks humanly impossible to do without ripping it to pieces, to clear the stinking bolts. After many days trying to figure it out I got angry and jacked that thing like crazy , when my frustrations had all been released, I looked over the edge of the fender and amazingly the 2 bolts where about one inch above inner fender well that had blocked me from extraction for days.
    Thank you

    Hi, thanks for the video(s). We have a 2002 PT Cruiser, i'm on the upswing, new pump in, when i noticed our timing belt tensioners old and new don't look the same, there isn't a spring to line up. Hoping that means it will be easier.... Removing the crank pulley was the hardest part. I bought the tool for this, but had to fabricate a 1/2 inch slug to go inside the hole as I ran out of threads while pulling it. We also have Jeeps with 2.4L engines which is why i went ahead and bought the tool. Also, to stop the crank from spinning, i got this tip from the local rental guy, pull a spark plug, feed in some rope so that the piston can't come all the way up. And, as he said, don't lose the end of the rope!

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 років тому

      +timh141 Evening......there is another version of tensioner that is spring loaded. You have to insert a pic/allen wrench into the hole on the center of the tensioner after rotating it back. Then once the belt is lined up....pull the pin/allen wrench. If you email me at david@motorcitymechanic.com and I can email you some specifics as well if you like.

    • @tennboy54

    Thanks for the follow up. After sitting back and thinking about what was making this difficult with a stiffer belt, I rigged a way to lock both cam wheels and the crank bolt. That made it a lot easier to get the belt on. I glued a magnet to a mirror to free up my hands. The tensioner was easy to see and I was able to adjust exactly into the long groove. I did 4 full rotations and it held the alignment. After reassembly, it started right up and is running great. (When I got a look at it initially, the tensioner was way off the recommended position) I don't have cruise now. I think I may have dislodged or broke the 1/8 th inch vacuum line on the frame during the belt change. That's for another day. And since I was up on jack stands, I found a bad tie rod end plus the new multipurpose light switch (fog lamp pull) went bad again. I traced down the wires under the steering column and bypassed it. (warranty up on the module. I only used it twice, bad design) Now I have a lighted switch between the Rear Defrost and Lighter and still have an indicator showing on the cluster when it's on. (bonus). No longer do I have the fogs coming on while I'm parked overnight. Always something on this 2002 but still a fun car. (100K + miles ) My previous PT (300k plus miles 2004) was a lot less maintenance heavy. I am sending your link to the PT Cruiser FB pages I follow. If there were more techs like you, there would be a lot less shade trees doing their own work. Thanks again. Sorry about the essay :)

    hey man, i really appreciate this group of videos you made. because of them i was able to get my water pump removed in a timely fashion, and the link you provided saved me almost 40 bucks off a timing belt package. as soon as the kit arrives ill be on my way to putting it all together! also i would like to note that i did not have my a/c evacuated. it is possible to remove everything with the lines there, i just dont recommend it! wow what a pain! also to remove the crank pulley i had to use a longer bolt in place of the stock one to get it off the rest of the way...

      Thanks for using the link Tony when buying the kit. Your correct about not having to remove the freon but as you saw.....any extra room you can get the better. The choice is yours. I appreciate you finding and watching all the parts. Make sure to subscribe and share the videos

      Much appreciated Glen. It took awhile to make but I felt it was needed. Too many people run scared from this job so I wanted to show that its tame and doesnt bite like they think it will. Thanks for the comment and for watching. Make sure to subscribe and watch my other videos as well.

    I finished the timing job Saturday. The engine runs great! Great video. I would add two things; when you raise the engine to remove the big mounting bracket the power steering cap should be just about touching the cowl/fire wall. I struggled because i did not raise it enough. The other thing is installing the harmonic balancer. That sucker is tight! A good impact gun makes the job easier.
    Now i just have to fix some minor issues like a bad thermostat. Bad a.c. condenser. Bad watts link etc. Lol. The good news is the car only has 85k. Thanks again for the great tutorial video!

      simclardy1 Awesome glad to see that it worked out great. I appreciate the update and for the comment. Thanks for watching and help spread the word by sharing these videos with others. Did I mention I have videos on the thermostat replacement and the radiator removal which would be just about the same as the condenser.

      David Gonzalez Thanks David. Just take your time and follow it step by step and you should do fine. It will more than likely take more than one time lining the timing belt up. Don't give up and it should turn out fine. Make sure to subscribe if you haven't already and help spread the word by sharing these videos with others.
