I'm getting pissed at Google for making it impossible to reply to comments, but here are my 2 cents on this device concerning price/performance: This is definitely more expensive than a cheap plastic device with quality control issues. This fills a niche market--ultraportability with near-desktop power. This is an ultraportable device with SSD, 6+ hour battery, Haswell i5 CPU, high quality display, high quality pen input, and excellent quality overall. You're paying a premium for the quality and portability.
One thing people don't understand about the 8.1 start button, is if you right click it...you have all the options from control panel and original start button. You left that meaningful part out.
I agree that you can purchase an additional keyboard, however with the keyboard already being there, integrated, sells me as a potential customer. I own a chromebook that I used for school for about a year. The integration with drive was second to none. For me it's about my technology needs and what device can fulfill more of them than any other. If I can find one that will do it all I can stop lugging around multiple devices for different functions! Surface Pro 2 really stands out to me atm.
Seriously? I'm an IT administrator and with the surface pro 2 I can walk around the facility I work in and troubleshoot issues on the go. Right now I'm either lugging my 30 pound backpack with my laptop in it around (with all my tools), or lugging my latitude laptop around to do things like remote sessions on servers, or remote into my main desktop to get to something I need on the fly. With the pro 2 I can do all this and it's almost as powerful as my current laptop. There's SO many more uses.
Hi Constantin, well this is how this conversations started in first place. When I reviewed it - you are right the new Pro 2 is the complete thing. I am sorry I was mislead. Well than I am going to test one of them today! Thank you for the correction!
Not if you expect relatively accurate color accuracy. The color calibration on the Yoga 2 Pro is a concern for many potential buyers. Check the Lenovo support site for details.
the Pro is basically a full-size laptop in a tablet platform where the 2 is running window RT. Surface pro can do anything a fullsize laptop/desktop can do while the surface 2 is like the Ipad ( entertainment oriented).
It becomes a must if you want to do productive stuff, like programming, at a fast pace. No touch screen keyboard can replace a physical keyboard on a tablet/laptop/desktop, 'cause you'll have a hard time typing without turning your head looking at the wide keyboard. It's replaceable on Smartphones 'cause you can simultaneously see both where you're typing and the entire keyboard.
I agree on this point, my father and I are actually both in the "industry" if you will and he is a SkyDrive junkie, while I'm a google drive junkie just because I've been using it since launch. In all seriousness though I think if we see the developer community jump on board with these main stream apps I think it would make a great "get work done" tablet. However I'm confident that when I get some free time I will be able to find a solution to file sharing across platforms (RT to PC/Mac etc.)
It can run basic games, it doesn't have a dedicated graphic card, so it might not handle the lastest games. Surface pro 2 comes in 64gig, 128, 256, and 512gig, but you can put a micro SD card in it, to increase storage and a external hard drive, Hope that answered your question
Ive used one a few times. Its too big and chunky for a tablet and not as adjustable as a laptop. I adjust my laptop by a mm many times each day depending on where i am using it. 2 positions doesn't cut it.
It has full USB 3.0(for Surface 2, at least) that can support most USB peripherals, windows file explorer, full free office software, awesome skydrive integration, cheaper than iPad, interaction with other Microsoft products(ie. Xbox, WP, other windows PCs). That's all I can think off at the top of my head.
I do agree that the Apps power is just not there yet. I was using just a galaxy tab for almost a year and I wanted even to buy a chromebook thinking that I will only need the apps that are there. Alas, I was wrong. The reason that I have watched this review was that I actually hoped that Microsoft made a step forward, but functionally it is not that superior from a tablet (I mean you can buy an additional keyboard).
How about all the Baytrail tablets that are already announced? They can beat the iPad in battery life, and still run traditional windows programs. Would you consider those?
well than you need a tab...and do you actually need a tab when you have phone? Do you just occasionally work with Microsoft Office or you need a full functionality of a PC. I am not sure why they are limiting it, could be product diversification
Yeah, but all your files are not in a sandbox. Your music, videos, documents, pictures can all be accessed through the file manager, allowing for easy management. And having a full usb port means that you can just drag and drop your files into your tablet just like a PC.
I'd like to note here that the surface 2 has FULL FLEDGED office on it, not the run down version on the original surface. So yea as college student who also works in the IT industry the surface 2 would cover a lot of the basis (the pro would cover all of my technology needs in one device for me personally). I've tried ipad, won't cut it. It simply isn't powerful enough to do what i need it to do. Even the galaxy note tablet lineup won't get the ease of use I'm looking for. Surface 2 would.
I tend to agree. I've got the first generation Surface Pro and honestly, I wouldn't want an Android nor iOS tablet anymore or even RT. Being able to run full Windows apps just kills the need for an Android device that has more features and customisability than the iPad. Yes, some might argue, why not just buy a Win 8 laptop? Well, because it's not portable in the same sense and touch screens just work best on a tablet. I love it and will probably buy one of the next Surface Pros again.
Yep, it's running full Windows 8.1 with the internals of an ultrabook. Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Steam, Photoshop, etc all run just like on a home or laptop PC.
Yes and no; on the Surface RT tablets you bring a totally valid point, but as the Pro version can run x86 apps you're good to go whether there's a Windows Store App or regular version.
I wish "reputable" webzines would actually review products after they've used it for more than an hour. Try a long term test for a change and see how you like it for a month or a year, like car magazines do for car models.
I hate to keep bothering, but check out that ultrabook that samsung is making that runs windows with Android as an App add on. I really think that might give you the best of both worlds! It's touchscreen of course.
It's unfortunate that nobody has come out with an all in one replacement (minus cell phone of course). However, I think Microsoft is coming closer to that mark right now than anybody else. The Pro 2 with the dock options for a mobile workstation that you can still use at your desk screams productivity. With the pro 2 I still get all the great applications as well. Also something else Samsung was/is (not sure) developing an ultrabook that ran android as an app, which would solve our conundrum.
Looks great!!! To bad not many people are ever gonna use on, i looked at this because i needed to decide is i wanted to buy them for my work, I will go with the Ipad.
That's great Vincent! So those of us who DON'T know how to type as well as you can cut off your hands and clone them for our own! Or you know, you could just not say anything about the backlight if you don't care less.
I'm disappointed Surface 2 (non-Pro) doesn't enable use of a pen (very useful to me), though Samsung Galaxy Notes do and are comparable in price. Office software included on the Pro? Version?
Microsoft has put out a fix for the wifi-module of the Surface 2 Po. The Battery life should improve from 6 to 8 hours. I don't have one, but could you test it?
Pro 2 runs the full Windows 8 OS which can run full programs like adobe suite, steam etc where as the surface 2 is running on RT and will still have the desktop, but it's less powerful so can't run full programs and just have apps.
A keyboard that doubles as a cover and is very thin...you'll be paying similar price for an iPad keyboard that offers such stuff, which would most likely be coming with bluetooth (then you'll have two batteries to worry about).
if you spec it up to have an equivalent ssd (128gb) and add in the keyboard cover you are at the same price as a macbook air. Its basically a wash between this and macbook air: + Very nice screen compared to air - very poor battery life compared to air + digitizer - weaker gpu - limited io (you can very surprised how big a difference 1 usb port makes)
"retina" which is just a apple marketing term is any resolution pixel density over 300dpi that is higher than the human eye perceive... dont fall for marketing terms.
Because the naked human eye can actually detect every single pixel. After a certain level of fidelity, there is no way anybody can possibly tell the difference unless it's told to them.
Ok so you say that you use the Office package on it. That`s cool I use it a lot as well and I love it. But what about google drive services? The only thing that is lacking is the VBA, although you can use java scripting on it on a PC
The only problem with the surface tablets that I have would be them not have cell coverage. If they add that it will seal the deal for me and i will never touch and iPoop ever again.
If they can run a fully functional Microsoft Office on it (not sure about this fact, I dont know how the VBA runs on it), I am sure they can make it for any other programs. Well my final word is that it is a nice device that Microsoft may be failed to put on the market earlier. It can be an advantage for Microsoft fans but functional users should not however be fulled by its resemblance with its bigger brother Windows.
I have a 2000 dollar budget : should i go for sony vaio 13 or microsoft pro 2. My only confusion is with the screen size, how big a factor is 10.6 inch vs a 13 inch to make a decision between the two???. looks wise i find pro2 better. Please advice
Just got both the Surface Pro 2 and the Surface 2. MUCH better than the already excellent originals. Ironically, while I was testing my new tablets, I watched streaming blogs of the iPad Air. Haha what a joke...I will never go back to iPad if MS keeps updating these amazing tablets.
pro 2 is intel based and has Windows 8.1 full PRO OS loaded which will enable you to load any windows software you want just like on a regular PC. Surface 2 is ARM CPU based and come with Windows 8.1 RT (real time) which only allows you to use apps from Microsoft store. for me those are the two main differences. there is battery life, weight,... but not as important.
Great display of knowledge here. Firstly, you CAN use a keyboard and a mouse with Surface. Secondly, Civilization V is very well optimized for touchscreens. Good luck trolling somewhere else.
Surface Pro 2 is much better than a lot of laptops and it competes with higher end laptops like the macbooks while staying at a lower price. It has just as much cpu power, memory and storage as any laptop unless it is a really high end gaming laptop.
Hi Dana, I am a gamer and i was wondering would the surface 2 be a good gaming computer and does it have a good hard-drive, please answer back thank-you.
A core -5 processor alone costs like 350 dollars... Try to find another tablet with the same specs for cheaper than the surface, besides which even more expensive tablets with i5 haswell are made of plastic. My main issue with the surface 2 isn't price, isn't that the battery and ssd are not replaceable and microsoft glued down the screen so heavily they effectively made it a disposable device despite having such good hardware.
so this can replace my laptop right? i am an average user who uses it for business, and a few accounts software, office and watch a few movies at home..
Why is it you want to buy the next surface pro? Because of the new dual click stand? As pointed out that seems to be the Only improvement. Laptop is the smart direction.
I love the product. My only concern is the price of everything. Seriously, I can accept $900 to buy the Surface Pro 2, but come on $130 just for f**king type cover?!?! Damn the price...
Unless your job consists of watching video for 9 hours a day, it should be fine. Those ~6 hours of battery are from having a video constantly play while wi-fi is on and active.
What I am simply saying is that either Microsoft are not capable of providing a fully functional windows on a mobile device like Surface or they are intentionally postponing its release in order to sale some more "cool features" like changable background and glowing keyboard
The Haswell setup for battery life was much needed but like a jack of all trades...good at many things, master of none. It's to heavy with sub par battery life to be a tablet. On the other hand why spend $1800 on a wanna be ultra book like this that is more bulk, less battery life and less options than any other Haswell ultra book. Not to mention your going to spend another $129 on a type cover to actually make the $1799 model useful as a laptop. MS just take another huge write off.
Some people open their laptop 24 hr/day for load a big thing. I think 64G is too small. And size's bigger than tablet, not a thing I can take anywhere.

It's actually really easy to reply. You just press the reply button.
LogicWithYou I haven't been able to since they changed the comment system. Did I miss something?
k98killer Oh yeah we can only reply to comments made by people who have Google+

Likewise. It's beat up by now but works perfectly and the battery is still good.

Yea, almost as much technical engineering as that complex Dual Click kick stand. What an Amazing upgrade?? MS is such an engineering power house!!
Hi Constantin, well this is how this conversations started in first place. When I reviewed it - you are right the new Pro 2 is the complete thing. I am sorry I was mislead. Well than I am going to test one of them today! Thank you for the correction!

Stunning.

Agree. Combine them and make it a holistic product!
God, I wish they'd include the keypad within the base models. Shouldn't cost more to get the add-on, it seems so essential
Should I get surface or iPad. 2nd gen Surface looks very enticing right now

Retina Display is a brand name used by Apple for liquid crystal displays, that mean LCD.
LIKE A BOSS!

ill get the surface pro 2
and wait til black friday to get discounted type cover

Ipad is a toy....I own the Ipad 4....it was pretty much useless for my profession....which requires office. Ipad however is a fantastic toy
That's great Vincent! So those of us who DON'T know how to type as well as you can cut off your hands and clone them for our own! Or you know, you could just not say anything about the backlight if you don't care less.
Pro 2 isn't really that much of a jump from the pro 1 for me to upgrade. Maybe pro 3 will have something worth the upgrade.
I'm disappointed Surface 2 (non-Pro) doesn't enable use of a pen (very useful to me), though Samsung Galaxy Notes do and are comparable in price.
Office software included on the Pro? Version?
What about the fact that there isn't a thriving app ecosystem? That's still important to keep noting.
Microsoft has put out a fix for the wifi-module of the Surface 2 Po. The Battery life should improve from 6 to 8 hours. I don't have one, but could you test it?
Shh. She was fine, not awkward and she gave a great review. Much better than The Verge's.
It's not a chunky tablet. It's a touchscreen laptop. Hence the USB port, full intel cpu, etc
Or is it grey? I'm not seeing any grey type covers on the microsoft site.
Pro 2 runs the full Windows 8 OS which can run full programs like adobe suite, steam etc where as the surface 2 is running on RT and will still have the desktop, but it's less powerful so can't run full programs and just have apps.
Cool review and the comments make me wanna buy this tablet looks really good. :)
maybe I would buy if next Gen come with flexible LCD

The video is filmed next to the NYU library!!!
I have the original surface pro... I love it
Surface Pro 2 is much better than a lot of laptops and it competes with higher end laptops like the macbooks while staying at a lower price. It has just as much cpu power, memory and storage as any laptop unless it is a really high end gaming laptop.
Hi Dana, I am a gamer and i was wondering would the surface 2 be a good gaming computer and does it have a good hard-drive, please answer back thank-you.
This should be worth buying this time.
It's actually slower than a macbook, and costs more than similar powered laptops because it's in tablet form and has 1080p.
A core -5 processor alone costs like 350 dollars... Try to find another tablet with the same specs for cheaper than the surface, besides which even more expensive tablets with i5 haswell are made of plastic. I. Want. It. Now.
i hate it when people compare this to tablets like the ipad or nexus cause its more of an ultrabook than a tablet..
I love the product. My only concern is the price of everything. Seriously, I can accept $900 to buy the Surface Pro 2, but come on $130 just for f**king type cover?!?! Damn the price...

Yes it does.
is the battery replaceable?
If the Surface Pro 2 came with a keybord it would be more valuable to me.
MS just take another huge write off.
yes we can use the onscreen keyboard
Also, what colour is the type cover in this video? Is it just the black one?
I think that having the touch covers be an $100+ additional purchase is a big mistake. I
Some people open their laptop 24 hr/day for load a big thing. I think 64G is too small. And size's bigger than tablet, not a thing I can take anywhere.
Wait so this thing can run full fledged pc games? (not at very high graphical settings of course)
yes
its just a standard Microsoft arc mouse that's been out for a very long time
And in addition to the earlier comment,
I never commented like i hated the surface. So better read properly before you comment. I just made a general opinion.
Other tablets have a lot better and more apps and games that are properly optimised for the form factor of the damn thing! + no viruses at all.
On a windows 8 machine, you will have to jump into the desktop environment, to open an app, because the app store is so less.
BTW Surface always had a calculator on the desktop....it's just been modernised.
The "full fledged" CPU you keep referring to has almost no height
Does the surface pro 2 come with Microsoft Office installed?
The attachable keyboard and the surface itself are thinner than the first surface.
What's the point on ANY other tablet?
Dat price... and not even a keyboard included
does it run legacy programmes like word, excel etc?
