Wow! This one should get 100k likes. The actual PSYCOLOGY of providing a functional & relaxing recording environment; priceless. It's all those things that we've all noticed and thought about. I'm saving this video.
So your saying the traditional smells of old pizza, ball sweat, weed and empty beer bottles are no longer good enough? And the room lit by one light and a bong? Damn, I'm gonna have to readjust. 😕
I like this points. Also I find a nice sofa that can take enough guests very valuable. so you don't start looking for extra chairs in the middle of a session 😃
Diffuser for essential oils, romantic way of playing music, calming candlelight like lighting, privacy options, nice drinks: are you trying to record your artists or get laid by them? Just kidding. ;)
Thanks Chris, great tips on how to set up your artists for success by providing a comfortable, inspiring space to create. I have another thing to add to the list - a place to hang coats and jackets - otherwise they end up on the chairs taking up sitting space or on the floor beside the drum kit.
i had an oil diffuser in my (small) room. I stopped using it because I found that i after a while it tended tend to coat everything with a really thin but lightly sticky film over time. It's almost undetectable until you come to dust...
Nice advises, thanks Chris ! To control the lights, this is easy these days to buy smart bulbs (Ikea Tradfri, Philips Hue, TP-Link Casa,...) that allows you to control no only the dim, but the temperature and sometime the color. In that situation, I would create profiles with various ambiances so I could just call them and adjust from the customer discretion.
Fantastic I'm upgrading to an Audient ASP800 with my ID14 but I want to hybrid it all through my 688 Tascam and was thinking 100% the number one tool for me would be to get a Patch Bay so I can quickly experiment with the Aux return/sends to my DAW, the same for the Dual sends, and to be able to be able to run my Guitars and Bass into my Pedal board via the Patch Bay. This gives me the option of the Audient Preamps the FET channels and the Tascam Preamps and Eq's. And affirms my decision to do so. And I need two or three more track lighting rigs. What a great video.
Good points, well taken.I agree. I recently Upgraded my studio. New Paint, New Carpet, New furniture, New lighting, new PC, New OS, New DAW, New Interface, New patch bay. I am overwhelmed. It sounds amazing, but every time I try to have a session with other musicians everything fails.
Nice tips. And good for saying no to bottled water. Surely the most wasteful and pointless product in any place with decent water supply. I live in Melbourne where the tap water is excellent but still people insist on buying it. *off to eBay oil diffuser and record player. 😊
Excellent ideas! I think these are more important than specific/expensive gear purchases. I find it difficult to quickly transition from my normal state of mind to my “ready to sing” state of mind where I can get inside the emotion of the song. So things like lighting - that can turn off all real life thoughts and turn on a floating/relaxing state - that’s probably a key to better performances, better songwriting, etc. It’s sort of like learning to meditate. Anyway…I really like these suggestions!
I can't do the essential oils/smells in our space. But I'm on board and on the right path with the rest of the list. I think reworking my lighting is an easy next step. As always, thanks for the inspiration and great advice.
This is so true. From my personal experience, I find the brightness and colour temperature of lights directly affects my confidence and concentration levels. Lights nowadays are either LED or fluorescent and I hate them.
Excellent info Chris. I use a salt lamp. As well as the negative ions it generates, it throws a light I find soothing and calming. Love your water idea. Single use plastics have to go.
My only comment I have on this video is about the patch bay to swap out mics. Swapping out mics is super easy and fast so it's a lot more work to just swap the mic out. I've been in quite a few studios and they've never used a patch bay to change mics, they just swapped it out.
Yes! Very good ideas from experience... You might want to keep the scents to a minimum, though. Anyone with a lung problem of any kind (allergy, asthma, etc.) could have trouble singing. Maybe running an air purifier during off hours might help without the scents?
Wow! I’m planning on building me a home studio (but not having clients/musicians come over tho) but your tips are great. Just for ME learning how to make my atmosphere more relaxing and organized. Those tips definitely helps. Thanks for the video. Signing on for your course.😌🎶👍🏾
Very very dope suggestions! The thing missing from mine is an essential oil diffuser. About to hop on that one. I have a video on my channel of my studio. I may have to make another. 😂😎
Funny, every point you made I initially scoffed at. But then I heard you explain and I was convinced you were right, except for the lighting. I refuse to get rid of my black light and strobe light motif. .)
Great discussion Chris. It is amazing on how often this stuff gets overlooked. The performance is everything! One note - I did have some folks out to my studio and they actually complained about a candle I had on and also the essential oils I had in the sitting area! LOL. Maybe ensure whatever it is can be somewhat neutral?
Mine is an artist studio, and i only record my band, and probably always will. Its a modern vibe cause i hate nostalgia, its black and white and grey😂. I will look into the diffuser because the house is dry and has forced air. Good stuff😎
These are great tips that no one ever thinks about, however, I'd be worried that an oil diffuser would leave a residue on your equipment. This is particularly detrimental to the heads on tape machines & adats (if you still use them) and possibly mic elements. I'm no expert but a quick google search on "Do Oil Diffusers Leave a Residue?" seems to show that they can.
Nice vid. Hi Chris I would like to buy a new gear to improve my recording chain what would you recommend me to get.. a good mic or a good compressor. Actually I have a Nt1,Neve1073 and an apollo. I was thinking about to get a good mic and a distressor. Thank you 👌🙏 What mic do you recommend me
What youve got it awesome....Stop chasing.. Its how you use it. Still , Buy a C12VR Mic.. Only cost you 10k.... Honestly..NT1 is useful....But, for me. . Dont ever sell you experience or capabilities with the gear owned... Its always what you can do with what you've got... And what you have is leaps and bounds above many.. Brands are just that..... What you do with what you've got is the truth... Its no BS... Like it, or dont.
Hi Chris! Thank you so much for this video. I will definitely use some of your tips in my home studio! I have a question. I'm looking to add some basic acoustic treatment (bass traps and foam panels). I've been doing some research but I'm not sure which is best : 2" or 3" wedge panels. I know this is a very general question as you have no idea what my basement looks like. But a general answer will do! I'm curious to know what size you have. Thanks again, love you videos! Stephanie from Canada :)
yeah totally agree, the lights and the sound ALWAYS! interact with each other.. in a disco, festival, or in a studio, all the same

Patch bay! The unused one from our old touring rack is heading for the studio. Thanks!

Haha... depends on the group you're serving I suppose :)
Great advice. Got all but the bay. Had one years ago and you are right.
All great tips. Thank you.

yaaasss I'm all about a diffuser and love lemongrass scent with palo Santo
Usually I don't write comments on UA-cam but damn...these tips are SO good.

That's one of the greatest jazz albums ever! Take 5 is timeless! Joe morrelo kills in on that album

Good video brother
Very interesting.
Can we go into more depth re the patch bay? dcb
#1: FRESH POTS!! There, fixed it for you.
Hi Chris!...I need advice: I just bought the Presonus 1824c interface, but cant't add all inputs and outputs in Studio One. What am I doing wrong?
1:56 this is gospel great point Chris 👍
I have a question about the essential oils. Won't that do harm to your equipment?
Not at all. You can run them at any low level you want. Turn it on every so often, put it away from racks. Make it a subtle addition :)
Where’s that guy in the comments section that lists the 5 things? 🤔
lemongrass, vinyl, dim, colored water and patch bays

I have the standard auralex 2inch foam for the walls and their basic bass traps. Nothing fancy at all but they do the trick!
