  • On the evening of September 13th, 2016, I filmed a westbound empty coal train as it passed through the Amtrak station in downtown Ottumwa, Iowa. With us almost to autumn, daylight is getting shorter and shorter in the evening, with this train passing through just about thirty minutes before sunset at 7 PM.
Somewhat unusual for BNSF trains is the presence of DC-traction locomotives on coal trains, as units with AC traction motors are better at pulling heavy loads. Sometimes, though, DC power can be seen pulling empty trains returning west towards the Powder River Basin. Such is the case tonight, as a single Dash 9-44CW locomotive is in charge of this train. You may also notice that this unit is equipped with a P3 horn, instead of the usual K3LA heard on most BNSF diesels from this period.

Finally the old BNSF paint is realized instead of the ES44ACs with their orange and black paint with their boring horns!

Cool! The video actally glitched out right in the beginning, which makes the sound and the video and sound apart by a little bit!
