  • In this video, we'll take a detailed look at a really nice original old Tweed 1955 Gretsch Electromatic Model 6155 Amp, and compare it to the modern reproduction recently offered for sale by Gretsch.
    After that, we'll analyze the schematic and make a couple alterations to the circuit, to improve performance and longevity, with a sound check to verify its great tone. Included will be a discussion of the two main functions of screen resistors.
    The final portion of the video will be spent cruising the desert in a nice old 1982 Jeep CJ7.

      My dad rolled his down an embankment and just had it flipped back upright and it was fine. But I was driving his Jeep straight shift when I was only about 9-years-old.

    I once lived in Tucson and had a girlfriend who would take me on camping trips out in the desert. She had a Chevy LUV two wheel drive pickup and she would take us out on some Jeep trails that you wouldn't think we could drive on, but we never got stuck. Thanks for triggering those memories! (She still lives in SE Arizona and we're still friends, but I haven't gone camping with her in years)

    Beautiful little Gretch amp, sounds great. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, for the trip out into the beautiful Sonoran desert. Oh how I miss it. Most of all the smell of wet grease wood after a rain shower. Here in North Texas I am surrounded by oak trees, and poison ivy, and I would gladly trade them for grease wood and cactus. About the only similarity is wind is about the same, this County is covered with rock crushers and gravel pits so there is just about as much dust and sand with the wind as back home but no mountains. Once again another great video.

    And thanks for the trip into the desert! Incredible views of the weirdly shaped weather-beaten rock. Where i live it isn't raining it's sure to do so soon, oh and those old track ties here in New Zealand are worth a very pretty penny. Wonderful little amp and video. Thank you, by the way; $110 in the mid-50s is $1065 today. As far as the rat, most likely a pack rat and they love shinny sparkly things and they steal them for their nest. Years ago I had a girlfriend accuse me of taking an old diamond ring from her. Can't tell you how much she apologized after I found the pack rat's nest under the house doing a pipe inspection. The ring among other household pieces were recovered haha.

    That cap can is original, I'll bet my hat. Those tend to hold up VERY well, in my experience. I think the ones in cans like that just absorb less moisture and are exposed to fewer environmental contaminants than other styles. Also, be aware, I don't think those generic caps we both use are formed at the factory. I think they are sent out unformed, so you might get a different result after they've been formed up in an amp. I have not checked that, but just guessing.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  6 років тому +1

      I used this amp in a video several years ago to demonstrate my new ESR meter and was astounded by the low values obtained. As a result, I left the can in place and caught all sorts of flak from the "capacitor police". Now it seems they are just as good as ever.......possibly eternal. The unformed theory would be easy to test. I'll try to remember to do a before and after ESR measurement on the next cap job. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    "Trusty and three ply."
    That one broke me up hard, lol.
    While I was enjoying your fantastic dry humor, which I enjoy considerably Doug! Thank you.
    Immediately, my own dry sense of dry humor went directly to "Void free birch ply". : )
    Great little amp, congratulations!
    A buddy of mine that worked at a music store for almost three decades, once had two very old ladies bring in a vintage Gretsch amplifier that they had him inspect and play through to make sure that it still worked.
    "Mikey" stated that it was an old combo with a 15 inch speaker that sounded incredible, complete nirvana he stated.
    I assumed that he scored it, as that's how he similarly scored his original 59 Bassman. Then, he clammed up, as usual, lol.
    Thanks for the desert cruise too.
    I noticed the "three cross's" fence, most likely left on purpose.

    Hey Doug, SOOOO good to have your knowledge and humor back! Your channel is my favorite. FYI, it seems that since you've been back, all of your videos have cut off transitions from one clip to another. Anyone else noticing this? For example, at ua-cam.com/video/j_lErFYtP0I/v-deo.html you're saying "Jeep CJ-7", but the seven gets cut off. A lot of the transitions from shot to shot have this same cutoff. And this happens on your other recent videos. Just wanted to let you know. It's not the end of the world and I didn't notice anything truly important being cut off, but it does make for some abrupt transitions and doesn't match your normally high standards.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  6 років тому +2

      Thanks, Trem. It's been a problem since I started using new video combining software. All video scenes are just fine until they are combined, and then random pieces are cut from the ends of some scenes. It is maddening, and I am doing my best to work around it.

    very thoughtfull and excellent as usual Doug. what a beauty! Glad your well too. love your freind there helping out with the trash. i have a little delema, i've had a super reverb reissue for a few years now and have hardly had a place to turn it up. till lately and have found that tone seem to be deminishing somewhat. tubes are looking brandnew.. the whole amp is prestine. however. i ended up trying to pry off the control knobs all ten. with a perfect size screw driver and after torking on all ten i realized they had set screws . wow. ashamed . anyway need to move on and fix this thing. i was half asleep and thought i'd prepair dismantle in the morning.. anyway i only go quarter to three quarters mobility on any of em now for the solid shafts have pulled away . it's a reissue so the pots are all on a pc.and mounted quite well with double side bracing on each soldered into the pc.i have opened one up by straightening the four bent tabs each one has and removed the cover . so clean and prestine. but the shafts are pulled slightly to and eighth of an inch out and the wiper is not touching it's contact. i am prepaired to replace all . seven solder joints each with the bracing. it would almost seem that if i push each one back fairly hard it might reset. but im worried about ankering that flimsy board so . i guess what im asking is where might you find a complete set of control pots for this super. im having a time finding much in the way of proper sceptmatics for this too. very little id. on or around the amp and chassy. its factory equipt with 4 pr10 jensens. there some evidence that it could be a 2000 yr. model if that would make any sense. Regards.

    Love your idea to protect and prolong the life of this amp with the screen resistors. That is a very good idea which in my opinion would only improve its value!
    Love the old Jeep! The old models like that are hard to find, other than really used and abused examples which are totally worn out. Yours is very nice.
    The Jeep reminds me of great old days visiting my uncle's ranch near Fredericksburg, TX. Sometimes wish I could go back! Beautiful scenery sure makes me miss Texas. Thanks so much for sharing your travels.

    Thanks Uncle Doug! This is the same model chassis as the amp in your Valco Oahu video, Valco must have made a hundred different "brands" of this same amp design. I just got an Oahu, and the electrolytic caps are still good too, but the wax caps are all leaky. There's a misprint in that schematic where the B+ comes off the last filter cap, it's supposed to connect to the B+ rail and jump over the .05uF

I enjoy these tours you give us....its very interesting to see other parts of the world where people live........your desert is very much similar to our outback parts of Australia and places I grew up..........I still go there and explore regularly, and must get some video sometime........ on a side note, I am thinking about getting a Jeep as all my 4wds are hardtops , and I am looking forward to getting out in the open air soon as possible.....I get more enjoyment being in an open top while looking around.......and our laws here wont allow the use of buggies etc on public land or roads, so open tops jeeps it has to be.

    I used a similar phase splitter in a recent design EXCEPT, I put a volume control on the
    second phase... turned up, we have full push-pull, turning down, it reduces feed to one power tube, eventually turning it off, to create lower power distortion rich single ended sound, without de-biasing the tube. I used individual power tube cathode resistors with bypass caps to bias the tubes. Interesting to this. Good call to add the screen grid resistors on yours. I use them every time.

      We may be going into business with it. If we dont, I will likely share the details of it for DIY copyists. If you have enough engineering knowledge, you can do it from what I already said. I wanted to be able to create the sound of single ended on demand and not require a split core transformer, ended up with variable PP to SE and it works sweet. As the ‘turned down’ power tube is still delivering DC idle current to the transformer, total quiescent currents remain balanced and no DC offset occurs side to side.

    I had the same jeep even the colour is the same , it was pretty rusty since we use a lot of salt on the roads up here in canada. I completely overhauled everything, even drilled out every spot weld, and sand blasted it all, even the frame and axle tubes , sprayed epoxy primered . put 9” ford rear end that was shortened and put disc brakes on it, Detroit lockers in both difs every bearing and seal replaced, 350 gm on propane had a custom propane tank made that tucked up under and between rear frame, basically propane is the doorman’s fuel injection, turbo 400 automatic trans. axle flipped. I put GMC truck tail lights in body again was epoxy primer, but base coat, clear coat red, the top was gold, base coat clear coat. 10,000 warn winch. had a lot of fun with that jeep. I could take a telescope up to the high mountain lakes, camp out. sadly a far left wing govt that got in, they were funded by the Sierra club and Alberta wilderness assoc, basically shut down any trail riding from alberta / US border to after Jasper national park, so I sold it, to a guy who knew the extents I went to on the jeep restoration. within in a year I built a mud bagger but thats another story lol. oh and that leftest party only lasted one term, and lost very badly in the next election, but stilll only true off road machines are allowed, snowmobiles, dirt bikes and those side by side , the bridged the govt built over the rivers and streams art wide enough for jeeps, and its illegal to drive through them. I hope building tube amplifiers won’t become illegal.
    since im a finish carpenter /cabinetmaker im thinking about building amp boxes out of solid wood , many possibilities but both you say those would get expensive but I dont know of anyone doing that, and im sure that some would like an amp as a piece of fine furniture in their homes. nothing ventured nothing gained.

      Thanks, Caleb. I speak from experience. The local Mr. Quick, back in the early 60's, sold 15-cent hamburgers and 10-cent french fries. So, being a young stallion with a dollar burning a hole in my pocket, I naturally bought 6 (onion-laden) burgers and an order of (greasy, slimy) fries.....and proceeded to wolf them all down, on the way to the drive-in movie with my girlfriend. Let's just say that there wasn't much "action" that night......except out the driver's window and all over the side of the car, about midway through the first feature :(~~~

    Matey, where I am, in Auckland, New Zealand it's all harbours and extinct volcanoes so our paths for wandering are all around the coastlines. On one of favourites, which is on one of the oldest points where the original city was built, theres a well neglected walk where the cliffs have eroded, making circumnavigation somewhat not for the feint of heart, I've actually found a well old stationary engine slowly sinking down into the sands and have long pondered the huge task of possibly rescuing it. I did actually rescue a likely forged steel live front end well soaked in the briny over long years mostly to see whether I'd give up on the long walk back to my car, the weighty corrosion balanced across my shoulders, whilst in my hands I had buckets full of old bricks and other ceramic jettison emblazoned with oyster growth to make Gaudiesque brick walls, which is another of my favourite doings... I'm such an idiot some times, but, gosh and golly, it's fun!
