The 3.5 eco boost in the F-150’s with a rated tow capacity of up to 10K plus. The engine builder I used for years has torn many of those engines down with well under 100K with 2-3 times the wear of a V8 with 100-250K. Heavy load plus heavy foot takes these little guys out early. Scotty is so right about the oil consumption.
That's a SHAME.
They should have stuck with the 3.3 V6 like they do with their interceptor models.
We have the 3.7 for our interceptors in Canada. They’re coming in left and right for cats. There’s a tsb for it right now, but it’s definitely way less of a hassle than those ecoboost models.

This is why I own an old school 2013 4Runner TRD Pro. I bought it new. It now has 53,000 miles on it, and nothing has gone wrong with it. All I’ve done to the vehicle is have the regularly scheduled maintenance performed. Everything works flawlessly despite driving it off-road in some challenging situations. It holds its value very well, and rightfully so. It’s the best vehicle I have ever owned.

Yeah all these new cars have plastic intake manifolds, plastic valve covers, plastic “beauty covers,” and more plastic. All I think is garbage when I see these cars.

I think we just got a life lesson here, a few kids with computers hooked to the car couldn't get to the point that an old school guy got just by doing a maintenance job as old as the internal combustion engine, hard to believe but I think that guys like Scotty are like a bridge between old and new and they have mastered that, and by the way I'm only 6 years older than the Celica.

My buddy's eco-boost F150 is just that. You're either having fun on "boost" where the thing is a blast to drive but drinks fuel like a sailor on shore-leave, or you're driving like a granny to get "eco" where the mpg isn't even all that impressive.
1366 overclocker there are different ways of keeping consistent manifold pressure like designing the cylinder head and camshaft for flow and good pressure and there is variable cam lift and phasing. A turbo seems like free power but it comes a cost, higher oil temperatures, failure of turbo, and it creates its own resistance to exhaust flow. But for increasing power, a turbo can be handy. On my GMC truck 6.6l Diesel, lost power smoked like rolling coal. It threw a code for low boost pressure among 3 other codes, including one for the Mass Air Flow Sensor. I changed the Mass Air sensor and the other 2 codes went away with it. This was just to make the point that you said. These things are all interconnected and mess with each other. These codes oftentimes just push you in a direction, but you still need to use a little thought process to figure things out. Back in the distributor days, An old Corrolla one time developed a bad wire and misfired as it shorted to the head. Car would not run worth a crap on the other three cylinders. I presumed that the unburned fuel from the one missing cylinder was messing with the O2 sensor and it was shutting down the fuel to the whole engine. I changed the one wire, the engine ran fine after that for as long as we owned the car. (I changed the other 3 after too)
Shhhh dont tell that to the "new GM" truck buyers out there. They take offense when you insult their masculinity by pointing out its probably not a good a idea to have your 4200lb truck be powered by a 4 cylinder. And an ecoturd at that. People just dont seem to want to learn or listen to the experts, until they have to tow their vehicle to your shop.
Turbos in such a large vehicle with a small engine 🧐, great job Ford. Making it more complicated with poor quality just shows that gone are the days of simple thinking such as “it’s a big car, let’s use a V6” haha.
There's a V6 but it has Turbos too. All automakers are jumping on this go-kart sized engine with turbo idea, and Toyota is doing this with the new 2021 Tundras too....they went from bad to worse.
Same with honda . Ford is not the only car company who are putting turbos on a small engine. the new accords 2018 - Present 4 cylinder very small engine with turbos ,great job honda
I've got a 1975 mustang and that 2.3L 4 cylinder is nice and simple. I'm pretty sure in the 80s they made the same engine with a turbo. Dont get me wrong, these mustangs were super light so that would be great but back then they had some common sense
Yep, they're all doing it. Keep your older cars, because this is the alternative.....
My buddies 02 Ranger with the 4 liter still runs fine, without any problems. 187,000. Few of these newer Ford's will get to 150,000 miles, probably.
Brilliant, just brilliant!
Good man Scotty for saving the customer $$$
The problem with these small engines is they are more like an F1 engine and simple things like the spark plugs having a higher resistance can upset the feedback because it uses the spark resistance to measure engine output/boost. Presumably it is designed to stop someone just winding the boost up to go faster. I drove an early electronic Volvo truck which would pull like a train until the temperature got over 25 degrees C and would then derate 20 odd percent like you had flicked a switch. Euro truck in Australian climate was not good.
