Hey Guys! Welcome, and in today’s video, we will compare the quality of life and living costs in California’s third largest city San Diego to its Spanish counterpart Valencia.
The low cost of living in Spain is among the most alluring reasons to relocate, among many others. With a lower cost of living than in the USA, you can live in Spain and experience a great quality of life. Prices are always one of the key factors when comparing two nations, there is no getting around that. Spain appears to be a particularly strong choice in that regard.
Spain has a 123% lower cost of living than the USA on average. Rent, utilities, groceries, daycare, and health insurance are the items with the highest price discrepancies.
There are several benefits, including warm weather all year round, delectable food, and an advanced healthcare system. Spain has relatively modest living expenses despite having high levels of living. Although America is reputed to be far more expensive than Spain, it shares many similarities with Spain in terms of temperature and a mingling of cultures, particularly when comparing the cost of living in cities.
▶️Here are some of the cost of living differences between the cities of San Diego vs. Valencia:
    • Meal for 2 people in mid-range restaurant San Diego cost $80 & Valencia cost $46.27
    • Regular capuccino price in San Diego $4.74, on the other hand Valencia $2.04
    • One gallon milk price in San Diego $4.02 & in Valencia $3.19
    • 1lb chicken fillet price in San Diego $7.21 & Valencia $3.08
    • 1lb apples price in San Diego $1.97 & Valencia $0.91
    • Local transportation 1 way ticket cost in San Diego $2.50 & Valencia $1.54
    • On 925 ft apartment electricity, heating, cooling, water & garbage bill in San Diego $170.36 & in Valencia $137.70
    • Free-school or Kindergarten school monthly tuition fee for one child in San Diego $170.36 & in Valencia $137.70
    • In city-center one bedroom apartment rental cost per month in San Diego $2,597.29 & in Valencia $757.83
    • In city-center area price per square feet to buy a apartment in San Diego $1,069.81 & in Valencia $280.76

Hola. I just arrived in Valencia from Northern CA and I'm staying in an Airbnb for a month (it was a coincidence that Las Fallas was going on which was boffo.) I assume the apartments listed in Idealista are for those who have long-term visas, meet requirements, and sign a year lease, correct? I went to the website but I'm not clear on what the requirements are. Thanks in advance. BTW, I am impressed with your research, such as Las Fallas, especially given I assume you are still learning the language. Much appreciated.

Starting in Madrid as that is where I have family but rents are soooo expensive so we are still looking at Valencia and other cities close by like Gandía, Denia etc. we haven’t had much luck with Idealista in Madrid. It is all agents. We are trying to find a landlord that is willing to work with us on an NLV without employment paperwork which it seems most agents want you to have. We joined your FB group also. Please pass along any suggestions or recommendations in finding a rental as we have a few weeks in Madrid and will head down south.

    • @EverythingIsBoffo
      @EverythingIsBoffo  9 місяців тому +4

Yes absolutely saving so much money still compared to the US. Some food items have gone up a bit, 1 trip to the grocery store last year would cost 40, now it’s 50€ for a cartful of stuff. Still quite reasonable. When we dine out our bill hovers around 27-40€. Used to be 23€.
We save the most by not having a car. We don’t pay for gas, parking, tickets, repairs, car wash, etc. we get around by walking or bus/metro.
We also found a gym membership that costs 109€ for 15 months, so what used to be 35/month is now around 7/month. So I guess that evens outs the food costs.

As a US citizen you’re gonna be doomed to double taxation regardless of where you go. You’ll have to pay taxes in the country you live, and to our greedy AF country cause that’s just how they want it. Even if you don’t live or work in the US, you’re still forced to pay taxes to the US. Spain has a high income tax too so you’ll be subject to that. I believe Portugal has better taxation policies where if you go on a D-7 visa or a golden visa, you won’t get tax in Portugal the first year, and then you’ll get reduced taxation for the following 2 years? I might be wrong on the last one but they have like a treaty to make it easier on tax payers. You can’t escape taxes sadly but you can escape this miserable life filled with consumerism in the US 🤷🏻‍♀️ there are plenty of options on visas and stuff, watch different channels and you’ll see 😀

All these video sites tell you about how much cheaper it is to live in Spain. What about talking about Spain and not tubs of yogurt. It's as if Spain is Barçelona, Madrid and Valencia. Don't encourage people to move to Spain if they have never made the effort to learn Spanish and know nothing of its culture and history. What are Americans now economic migrants? Stop this insidious, destruction of affordable living for Spaniards in the cities mentioned above. You are destroying life for the long term residents of these cities, particularly the elderly.

@@EverythingIsBoffo Thank you for your response! Two last questions, after living there for several months, are you still loving it? Also, when finding an apartment for rent, is it best to go directly to a real estate agent? Thanks again!

@@joyfullypacinglife8847 we are loving every day here. Absolutely no regrets, this hit all the items on our checklist.
I recommend going through the websites and then calling the agents, or leave a message if they don’t pick up. When we had agents look for us, sometimes it took them days to send us anything because they have other clients. But since we had a lot of time on our hands, it made sense to do a lot of the legwork and eliminate the apartments that we didn’t like right off the bat.

Paying more for unhealthy food that can kill you or make you obese is absurd. Paying more for mediocre housing that may lead to hoarding due to laziness and overdadvertising is just as bad. Paying for overpriced cars that can't even be driven at high speeds in many cases. Smoking weed/cigs, drinking alcohol, doing (pharmacy) drugs, etc. Each of these can easily keep you stuck and the list goes on. The U.S. is not going to last long with this approach.

There's a massive difference in lifestyles, and we feel lucky to be here in Spain. We haven't had or needed a car for 2 years now, and haven't felt the pressure that we felt in CA. Most importantly, we sleep well knowing that we will not have medical debt as long as we live here in Spain.

Videos like this I find annoying. You compare San Diego CA, a known super expensive city to valencia. Who don't you compare valencia to Tampa Florida?
Secondly, you are comparing post tax costs not pre tax costs
Living in Florida on 100k of income will leave you with 90k in post tax income. Living in valencia on 100k of income will leave you with 65k post tax. And good luck finding a job in valencia paying that amount of money.
This video is misleading and should be relabeled to compare valencia to san Diego, not US vs. Spain

    • @EverythingIsBoffo
      @EverythingIsBoffo  Рік тому

We only lived in California and have visited Florida a few times and never really knew it enough to compare. If we made a video comparing Tampa to Valencia, then that would be misleading and probably more annoying. Apologies if this video created confusion. We’re not in any way professionals so this free video should be taken with a grain of salt. Appreciate the feedback! 🙏🏼

      1. Tampa has like 350k residents to Valencia's 812k and San Diego's 1.26m residents, that comparison would make absolutely no sense. Due to inflation fluctuation that occurs especially in a capitalist driven economy such as America. THOUGH not the BEST comparison, OP simply is using the knowledge they have to inform people who may have been wondering. They never said its end all be all.
      2. post tax costs... are being compared because European countries rarely have a "pretax cost" the posted prices...already include the tax.
      3. If you didn't enjoy the video..make your own, fix what you didn't like.
