I had to move in with a stranger in order to afford to live and eat. I rent a room with another senior who owns his home but is having trouble paying the taxes because of the increase in value and tax rates. I was really worried about that but we help each other. It’s turned out to be a good thing for both of us.

Their story really hit home. So many of us seniors are in the same situation right now. Me and my hubby went from taking mini vacations every year to never taking a vacation and struggling just to pay the basic bills. We don't even own a cell phone, have basic landline service with no extras and thankfully our internet is included in that. We go to the churches for food boxes once a month. If we didn't, we couldn't survive.
The system is designed to keep seniors living in poverty. I am 64 and have to work 2 jobs right now just to pay my rent. I am terrified of what's ahead when I do retire. Thank you for this interview and thank you for sharing your stories. Big hugs and prayers to all of you.
I agree. The system is wrongly designed such that if someone falls upon hard times and needs government assistance if they try to improve their situation they are penalized. It makes no sense other than the goal being to keep.people down.
Let’s face the facts nothing will never change. I’m 70 years old and for 70 years nothing hasn’t changed it’s only getting worse. They do not want it to change.
The richest corporations and the richest people are plundering, preying on who has the least choices and squeezes them! Humans are exploited for the profit of billionaires, without recourse. WITHOUT RECOURSE!
@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621. Thankful there is a system in place. If they get their way and implement Project 2025, we’re all sxxx out of luck as even social security will be cut or eliminated.
A Canadian asking here, but what happened things like AARP? I did a quick check it seems that it's doing ok for it's self. Royalties for the rights to use AARP's intellectual property (name, logo, etc.) paid by commercial providers of products, services and discounts for AARP members $908,960,000. Membership dues $301,017,000. Advertisements placed in its publications $147,687,000, and total operating revenue $1,648,795,000 .
Thank you so much very much for this interview. Seniors are struggling just to survive. The two gals you interviewed were great at explaining how government increases go up on one end and go down on the other. One step ahead three steps back. I’m 75 and am so blessed to be living with my daughter and son in law.
Seniors are struggling just to survive. I'm a senior and far from struggling to survive. I'm surrounded by other seniors; I don't think having a new Cadillac in the garage and vacationing in Europe is struggling to survive. The correct comment would be many seniors are struggling to survive. I wish people would speak for themselves and not everyone else as well.
Its called rules. You want the assistance, you follow the rules. And if you dont like the rules, then you get zero. Try to make a good decision for once and stop complaining about the future that your poor decisions created.
@@rcas350pilot8 I guess when you see so many around you it is easy to generalize. You are correct. MANY seniors are struggling. In fact, seniors are the fastest group falling into homelessness.
My heart goes out to these wonderful women. I know that my husband and I made the right decision in leaving California to move to Thailand where our money goes so much further. The situation described by these two ladies is common ALL OVER the country. I am in the same boat as them, but I live in Michigan! You've done a fantastic job reporting on this situation and as another stated "you are a good listener"! I have to work a part time job to make enough to qualify for housing assistance. My Social Security is less than $1000 a month, even with being exempt from paying the Medicare portion. I am 72 years old.
Anyone who has a large old home should consider starting a boarding house for seniors, like there used to be. I’ve met senior women who ended up with a large home, kids moved out and expenses/maintenance hard to deal with. Everyone could take turns cooking - pool money/food bank supplies, limit meals to breakfast and supper. When I moved to a large city years ago, I lived in a “residence club” which was an upscale boarding house. I loved it. We had business people and foreigners going to English language school. I had a small room, but there was a dining room where everyone gathered. It was a great way to live - privacy if I needed it and socialization when wanted. This is just a thought but if seniors sat down and brainstormed together, they might come up with a solution. 😁
@@noreenn6976 True, if they’re all involved in the senior center and probably have friends in the same situation, that should help. Everyone included in a boarding house has to follow rules. You don’t follow rules, you’re out. People are already renting a room in someone’s house so it’s not that different, just more people and space. When I lived in “the residence club” everyone respected privacy. We came together for meals if we were home but otherwise minded our own business. You have to run it like a business. Boarding houses were around for a long time before people started going into apartments. Another thought: if there are any old motels sitting vacant because the interstate passed them by, might be able to buy cheaply with a govt loan. There are all kind of wacky govt programs out there, just takes some investigation. This is where social media and Google come in. And there’s GoFundMe - start the process if you find a property.
I think it is a great idea to have senior rooming houses. I live in Northern Cal. Have friends who are struggling but refuse to even consider pooling our funds to buy a property and share a home like the Golden Girls did. Many live in large homes but complain rather than consider sharing their home even with friends they are close to and have known many years.
The thing I would wonder about and check is that eviction laws are so different than back in the day. I would check those before opening my house to borders.
Every year when the press starts saying SS is getting an increase, I have to laugh knowing it is going to be chewed up with increases starting with Medicare premium and deductible. It gets harder and harder to figure out what to give up to make ends meet.

There program called QMB that can be applied for at your local Fees office. It is part of Medicaid , but not full Medicaid. After hearing Pam & Coleen, I thank God when my husband died recently; I have a nice home. Too big for 1 person. No, I don't depend on anybody. I have some medical issues; I still continue to "slowly but surely", do as much maintenance around home & yard as I can. I am going to sell and downsize to a smaller home and plan on building an adjoining home (duplex style). Rent out the unit & live in the other. Generating an extra monthly income. We have our own home. I have been thinking if something happened to my husband, I would add a kitchen to the basement and I would move down there and rent out the rest of the house.
You don’t want to mention why the reserve food ran out but we need to talk about it to solve the problem. I am struggling at 70. I wanted to express my thoughts in PGE. Our bill for a house under 900 square feet is about $700. A month!! It’s outrageous and it’s been a tough summer with this heart. I’m also in Northern California in a small town. I would like solar but that’s a lot of money upfront as well. It’s frustrating and something needs to change! When I was 65 ten years ago I had both knees replaced. Then eight years ago I had both shoulders replaced. I had no one at home to help me after surgery. I made sure the doctor kept me in the hospital 3 days so I qualified to go to a rehap facility (nursing home). Medicare will pay for 21 days then my supplement insurance paid for a number of days. While there I received rehap 5 days of 7 of the week. Which required no travel time for me. @@gailjohnson6670 Blessings to you as well. The story you shared about rehab is a familiar one where folks have to basically jump thru hoops to get the treatment they need paid for. Thank goodness you had a doctor who worked with you.
I did the same when my stepfather had a major operation. The Dr wanted to release him early from the hospital. We asked if he could stay the extra day...they also gave me a long list of items he would need. I told him it was expensive and all out of pocket. They were able to add it to the bill as a prescription but when we went to take my step father directly to the rehab they had provided us with everything he would need. Most times explaining a situation will get you better results than just accepting and leaving. Another time while he was in the hospital we asked if my mother could spend the night. They provided a bed.

Carol .. this episode blew me out of the water. To learn that the tiny, & most often insignificant, COLA increases can cause loss of such critical things for seniors as Medicaid for seniors and substantially increase co-pays for subsidized housing .. and that Reserves at food banks were withdrawn & given to non/citizen immigrants. You are SO right … most people have no idea about things like this. I am very well read on most all news events & issues & had no idea. AARP is another smokescreen … they are not nearly the advocate for seniors they portend to be. I quickly discontinued my membership with AARP when I learned of their financial partnership with one of the large insurance carriers for Medicare health insurance policies for seniors .. & other things. The even scarier part of all this is the almost total absence of address to the plight of any of this for seniors in Congress. The Congressional culture that created Medicare, Medicaid, SS & many other essential programs is completely gone. ,And neither presidential candidate is addressing the plight of seniors in America OR the overwhelming escalation of the humanitarian crisis consuming the streets of America. This was excellent .. do more. 🌻U are a real gem🌻

Social security was never set up to be the sole support for anyone throughout their retirement. People needed to make saving a priority and a lot of people haven’t and unfortunately a lot of people still don’t. Food banks that I was associated with required people to have a social security number, several forms of ID and the amount of groceries provided were dependent upon the household size. A lot of people I saw in the food lines given where I live, reflected the American majority demographic, men and women; quite a few with incredibly expensive and nice cars including one who was driving a cyber truck, several in huge escaladles, F150s, BMWs, Mercedes. Other food banks are supported by the community, donations and/ or churches etc where there is no legal status requirement for receiving food, the Y I go to work-out is in the inner city and they have such a food bank. All kinds of people come there, overwhelmingly they are legally here or are citizens. Immigrants are not sucking up your benefits. Most of them work and pay taxes yet won’t be eligible for social security nor most benefits, depending on your state. The monkey on most peoples back is poor financial planning in youth and continued frivolous spending without discipline.
Absolutely. I rely on SS and have 22K in savings. When I was in my late 30s, I bought a little two bedroom one bath house on a 15 year note; paid it off in nine. Sold it before the 2008 housing crash, moved back to my hometown (Ft Worth)and paid cash for HUD 2BR/1B house. No cc debt and I buy cash cars to save on car insurance (liability plus a few bells and whistles, no comp and collision). I waited until I was 69 (this year) to collect my Social Security so that it would increase 8% each year after full retirement age which was better than what I was getting on my IRA CDs. I even quit work early during Covid and lived off savings, selling things around my house and even made money selling a used car that I bought three years prior for 12,000 when the market was up I made $13,500 on it. I pay both my house and car insurance annually to save on the service fees. I was getting a one month discount on my security alarm system through Protection One ADT but they just stopped that benefit after 30 plus years (more $ for their CEO/stockholders, I guess). I’m attempting to save $1000.00 a month 6 months out of the year to build up my emergency fund. You have to be forward thinking and do it yourself. My thought is that even if Social Security decreases by 50% in my lifetime hopefully I’ll still be OK.

@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 Are these senior centers government funded? Seems like they do not want the high a/c bills that the seniors are struggling to pay, they will not admit it though.
I live in Riverside California it gets very hot here too ladies I've been useing evaporative cooling for years and it works great in most areas in California and cost a fraction of A/C. Home depo has the Bonair 5000 its a great unit and will last for years. The only time I use my A/C is when we get a hurricane system that pushes up from Mexico and it gets humid. Other than that the evaporative cooler runs 24/7 in summer and allot of times just to pull in fresh morning air in spring n fall . If your less than 45% humidity evaporative cooling works great.
Thank you so much for talking about these issues. I am 70 and I also live in Northern California but the county I live in has a public utility instead of PGE so our utilities are much more affordable . I live in a tiny studio and the rent is affordable. My car is 30 years old but somehow still keeps running and while I can’t remember the last time gas was under $5 a gallon I only drive one mile a week to the market and back. And my neighbor and I split the cost of WiFi so I’m doing OK …..except that I can keep a roof over my head or I can pay Medical bills but I cannot do both. I have Medicare but it’s useless unless you have unlimited funds and I was denied Medical because apparently I make too much money. Ha Ha !! You speak of “possibly” being in worst shape after the Cost of Living Adjustment…. As an accountant you are ABSOLUTELY in worst shape. The COLA we are given to “keep pace” with increases is no where near the actual inflation rate. Each year the money we receive through SS drops us into a lesser position than the prior year. As a retired cost accountant, this is what I did for a living for over 40 years.
Poverty is a political choice, and seniors are at the bottom of everyone's consideration. Politicians make a lot of promises, but they never come to fruition. I'm well aware that I fall deeper and deeper into a financial hole every year, but there's not much I can do about it. I did freelance work for years to supplement those meager SS checks, but COVID and other things I couldn't control have pretty much wiped that out. So I struggle, like many others.
Thank you for sharing your experience ladies. Gosh it sounds like such a trap. Can't even afford to drive to a different State. I'm retired this year but I live on the East Coast. Life is much less expensive here. I feel so sad for you both.
It's sad how many seniors have to struggle with the cost of living then if they get assistance by food stamps it cut which hurts more, the new president will do something to help seniors.
Not if it’s Trump and the Republicans. They want to privatize and do away with Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Any Senior who votes Republican is voting against their own self interest.
You are right, Gloria. The lady is right that I helped in the wrong. People like I said earlier in my other commentary. They help in order illegal migrants. Let's keep it real order. Illegal migrants against all those food and help which needs to go to the people like this lady. And others like them first, they pay their taxes. They did their dues, but they give me to the illegal migrants. That's not right. Another bad example of bad government choices.
What this lady is saying about the government giving a little and taking away a lot from the seniors is my experience, too. I have not ever seen a $200.00 increase, though. It’s downright shameful how the seniors are being treated.

I'm in northern CA, not quite retired but having the same squeeze; drive or eat. Summer temps reached 109, frequent above 90; turned on AC 2x only. Inflation has been a big hit on a single income. I've lived on necessities for 15 yrs. Rent limits for "affordable" unit on median income for 1 is $3225 - studio, $3885 - 1BR here. Slowly buying items for my minivan in preparation for future changes.
I'm not really short on money, but I live very cheap out of long habit. I live in a solid trailer on my own 5 acres. I'm a widow and long retired. I wash sheets and clothes about once in a blue moon....dogs don't care. :) I'm in western OR, so I don't have a lot of extreme hot or cold temps. I guess being an old hippie pays off..plus not being divorced.....love to you all.
I just retired a couple of months ago due to mental health issues and I am so scared of what my future holds financially. Trying to get organized in case I end up living in a vehicle.
My suggestion to you would he to immediately set up a budget so you know what is coming in and where everybdume is going. I wish you the best and hope you are able to find a great therapist to help you as you plot your next course.
When my kids were little I was on AFDC (aid for families with dependent children) when I got a $15 raise in my monthly check. This was considered historic for the state to do. I was very happy until food stamps informed me my benefit would be dropping by $15. But then I was informed that my fuel assistance was going down by, you guessed it, $15! That historic raise of $15 had cost me $30 in help. I heard that people lived in low income housing had to pay $15 more for rent as well as losing food stamps and heat assistance. I asked my AFDC worker if I could give the $15 raise back and all she said was "well maybe you don't need any of the money we're giving you then". Jeez
Another obstacle of senior housing are the deposits. I had the opportunity last year but they wanted first, last and deposit which was equal to the monthly rent. Would have take all my savings and then some to afford to move into. So now still live in my RV with $300+ electric bills this summer in Q.
💐California law just changed and legally they can only charge first months rent and a deposit. 🪷 Some counties have programs with resources to churches and a lot of nonprofits , including CAL AIM which helps with deposits and sometimes rental assistance.🌿

I received $189.00 on a United Healthcare "hub" card for food, utilities or prescription/over the counter costs in 2023. My Social Security went up $36.00 in January, 2024. And that "hub card" went down $30.00 to $159.00! Just in that benefit (WA state) I got screwed out of all but $6.00 of the "cost of living" increase from SS! Naturally $6 doesn't cover anything. (By the way, I can prove what I am saying here, of course with bank statements and the notification from WA state.). Presently living in my van on free lands (which could go away easily come January if the election goes one way) in a spot where (Praise God) the temps are liveable here in AZ, waiting for the temps to get at least to the 80s in Quartzite! I have a fan but no air conditioning nor heat for the winter. Thanking God for blessings me with shelter, clothing and food (although I have lost 3 clothing sizes!). Thank you for bringing up these very real and dire senior straits. Blessings!
This seems to be by design across the western countries. I live in the UK and they are stripping seniors of the benefits they have paid into the system for. Keep fighting for your rights.best wishes to brothers and sisters in the USA🙏
I live in a subsidized apartment in Florida. Every year for the last seven years my rent has increased two or three times more than my cola. So each year I have less and less to live on. Next year I expect to move into my car. I am 86 now and will be 87 when I make this move. I was denied SNAP benefits last year.

Don't mean macaroni and cheese, I mean the macaroni in the box. We NE got a big box and you get a month out of that and stuff like that. Stuck upon food. I agree. The system is wrongly designed such that if someone falls upon hard times and needs government assistance if they try to improve their situation they are penalized. It makes no sense other than the goal being to keep.people down.

If you don’t mind me asking, how do you manage the language, and did you just box up possessions and ship by boat ?
@@jstratten5326 not at all! The language hasn’t ever been an issue as we live in Bangkok and most everyone speaks English. I have a UA-cam channel that goes over most everything we did to move here and we brought our dog too ☺️
The situation described by these two ladies is common ALL OVER the country.
It breaks my heart to see the situation so many seniors are in.
A boarding house is a great idea. Finding a good mix of tenants will be a challenge.
This should be a wake up call to all the young people out there to prepare early for their retirement. Great topic.😀

Well I do think Bernie does but he is an independent
Our increase will not cover oil heat this winter, car insurance or house tax that will be coming

They never talk about the Medicare increases that take away the benefits.
There program called QMB that can be applied for at your local Fees office. It is part of Medicaid , but not full Medicaid. I have to pay this by end of September. So, I’m still in my house, downsizing to get ready for Van life. So, I’ve gotta keep working. It’s bad. So I understand.
I don’t understand you getting a bill? Are you Not getting SS yet? My Medicare costs will come directly out of my SS.
@@Nwladylaura369 i was wondering d same. U could b right, he may not b claiming SSS benefits yet. Mine too is getting deducted automatically from my sss monthly. If he s still working and have medical coverage from work, he does not need to enroll in medicare yet even if he turned 65, especially if coverage from work is cheaper or free. I retired at 67 last month, and i only enrolled in medicare starting this month in sept....and there was no penalty for delayed medicare enrolment because i had medical coverage at work.
@@bfdee1603 I’m also paying for a supplemental policy to pick up the 20% not covered by A & B. But it does not really kick in until 90 days have past. Gonna have to pay the 20% for an upcoming surgery in November! 😼
I’m still having to work (my butt off) If I take SS now I’ll make too much because it’s not my full retirement age so you are correct I’m not taking SS yet. I have to wait about 2 years.

Thanks ladies. I’m 72 and I’m right there with you. I applied for food stamps and I got $34 dollars a month. In January it’s going up to $39! Wow a whopping $5. Someone said they were going to move to Mexico, become a citizen there, then come back illegally so they could get free benefits.

It has been this way for as long as I remember. As a single mom who is also a teacher, I make sure to save every penny I can. If we save pennies, we can count dollars. I do not think anyone can rely on the government alone. We have to find ways to take care of ourselves. We cannot control the White House, but we can control our house.
Thr calvary is definitely not coming, at least not for seniors.
@@KimK-cd3oegiven that you put some thought into it , you should probably be fine.

Janet Andrews hello from Virginia: Carol thank you for making us aware of the issues plaguing seniors it's absolutely horrible in one of the richest countries in the world this should not be happening. We all seniors have the same problems
God help us all!
He is the only.one who can at this point!
Ha Ha !! So I’m one medical event away from disaster and that’s frightening. I had a bad fall a few months back and was bed ridden but I could not afford to see a doctor. Knock on wood I’m better now and I hope I stay that way. I have to because I don’t have a choice.

It is moral corruption how seniors are treated. Everyone will be held accountable for this treatment.
Yep my Social Security increase was a few percents, but my rent increase was 8%. And don’t think we will qualify for Medicaid or Link anymore.
It's ridiculous that in America people have to use credit to buy basic foods.
Thank you for sharing your experience ladies. Gosh it sounds like such a trap. Can't even afford to drive to a different State. I'm retired this year but I live on the East Coast. Life is much less expensive here. I feel so sad for you both.
You ladies got it going, keep up the good spirits!

Dont loose hope. Change is hard but good for us hopefully.
You're very very fortunate that you have children to pay your mortage. GOOD LUCK
Maybe sell your home ? I did. I couldn't afford it.
It's sad how many seniors have to struggle with the cost of living then if they get assistance by food stamps it cut which hurts more, the new president will do something to help seniors.
Hopefully whoever is elected eill recognize thr plight of seniors and take steps to change things for the better.
Not if it’s Trump and the Republicans. They want to privatize and do away with Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Any Senior who votes Republican is voting against their own self interest.
God bless our seniors
Very informative video, thanks!

There are so many people who don’t have family to fall back on and this is unacceptable! Our seniors have worked all their lives and our government has just thrown them away. We have spent billions and billions of dollars on foreign wars and illegal aliens and this is the way our seniors are being treated! This makes me so mad and breaks my heart!
It is a disgrace!!
My husband and I live in the Texas Panhandle. Our temperatures run triple digets from June to August. We pay $200 for electric in summer using the AC daily and $200 gas and electric total in winter with snow, ice and below freezing temperatures. My water runs $90 during the summer to water my garden because my area is so windy, hot, dry and arid.
*digits
Those are actually amazing costs for your electric compared to many I have talked with who live in areas with extreme weather conditions. I spoke with someone recently who lives in Southern California near Palm Springs and their gas and electric bill was $1200 last month!!
You and many others are preparing for a future when they can no longer afford rents.
And yet, sadly, it will only get far worse to where we one day soon every one will wish it was as good as it is now.
Inflation is the problem. Who/what caused this inflation? Vote accordingly.
Very good video Carol

Gets harder and harder. At least you'll have months and months of food left over and stuff like rice beans, things that you can build up. And eat and cook yourself rice macaroni. Don't mean macaroni and cheese, I mean the macaroni in the box. We NE got a big box and you get a month out of that and stuff like that. Stuck upon food.
