The race is absolutely an issue. When people raised this in the case of Little Mermaid, they were told "Her skin color has nothing to do with it, it's not like anyone is race swapping Snow White." well guess what. Snow White is a European folk tale and the character herself literally got her name from her skin color (white as freshly fallen snow, anyone?) so no, Rachel Zegler's race is not irrelevant. This is our culture. Not something for Hollywood to paint over willy-nilly because they cannot comprehend a different demographic than California.
An alternative to all of this is to have her star in something new and original rather than remake something that created at an earlier time for different generations.
This movie is not about Snow White, this movie is about a different character entirely, so they should have created a new character and a new movie with her premise. I hope the evil queen wins

I will never understand this thing that the entertainment industry has been pushing, of insisting on engaging people in roles (whether acting OR directing) that they make VERY clear they have no respect for... Trying to hire a director for a live-action version of an anime film, who feels the source material had no interesting characters. (Jaume Collet-Serra about Akira) Choosing a director that had no real interest in making the 'middle' film in a planned trilogy, so simply 'burned' everything that had been built up for use in BOTH of the intended films, requiring the return of the establishing director to TRY to come up with SOME kind of replacement plot. (Rian Johnson in 'The Last Jedi', necessitating JJ Abrahm's return for 'Rise') And choosing actors that don't believe in the characters they're hired to play, blatantly disregarding (and often openly derisive of) fan feelings about long-established characters... Brie Larson's hateful take on classic comic fans of Captain Marvel, and now Zeigler's dislike of innocence and insistence that female characters must all be strong, and that love is a totally outdated concept, an appropriate idea from someone of the current generation of women destroying their families and relationships for the payoff of a divorce settlement, I suppose. But frankly...if someone does not appreciate the history of a character they've been invited to play in a film or other performance...they should WALK AWAY. Don't insist on working to completely CHANGE a character to suit YOUR perception of female characters! That's why there are auditions! If you read a script, and the character isn't as 'powerful' as you'd want a character you would play to be...DON'T TAKE THE ROLL!! Could you imagine an actress going in for a Ridley Scott film saying "Oh, I think the whole way this character I'm trying out for behaves should be completely changed, as I think she should be the bossy type!'? The casting director would say "Thank you- NEXT!" Otherwise? She does NOT look like Snow White, and while seems to have some moderate attraction in her own style, dressed as Snow White...she made me think of a less attractive Frida Kahlo. Seriously. Every time I saw clips of her, my mind just kept trying to interpret her eyebrows as being grown together. I mean, actually UGLY in the hairstyle AND the dress. All this while completely choosing NOT to think on the OTHER comments she has made regarding Gal Gadot. As for her 'apology'? The one opinion I was confused about not being presented in this video, but is by FAR the most likely: She was told by Disney, under no terms was she to fail to apologize to the fans of the classic animated film. The expressed anger and drama online after her VERY insulting comments having reached a point where even corporate had to recognize they were on the cusp of yet ANOTHER pitfall for the Snow White reboot movie. But this kind of hyper-feminism constantly works to deny that ANY woman should EVER be allowed to wish for such a loving partnership...pathetic.
